Miss Teen USA just crowned the 2016 winner on Saturday at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas: Miss Teen Texas, Karlie Hay .
But she didn't get to celebrate for long. Just hours after accepting her title, the new Miss Teen USA found herself in the midst of a scandal.
Tweets from Hay's Twitter account resurfaced from 2013 and 2014 in which she used the N-word and racial slurs multiple times.
The 18-year-old quickly released a statement to explain herself. "Several years ago, I had many personal struggles and found myself in a place that is not representative of who I am as a person. I admit that I have used language publicly in the past which I am not proud of and that there is no excuse for," she wrote on Instagram. "Through hard work, education and thanks in large part to the sisterhood that I have come to know through pageants, I am proud to say that I am today a better person."
She continued, "I am honored to hold this title and I will use this platform to promote the values of The Miss Universe Organization, and my own, that recognize the confidence, beauty and perseverance of all women."

Miss Teen USA 2013, Cassidy Wolf: The blonde beauty from California found herself in the middle of a sextortion case in 2013.
A person from her high school broke into her computer and remotely turned on her webcam, capturing her most personal moments in her bedroom. He then blackmailed and extorted the photos and videos. Eventually, investigators found him, and he confessed to the wrongdoings.
Swimsuit Scandal: Ahead of the 2016 Miss Teen USA, the Miss Universe officials announced that they would be eliminating the swimsuit portion of the competition, which had received backlash for featuring the 14 to 19-year-old teens in very little clothing. It was also criticized due to the purpose of the pageant, which is to award scholarships to young women who "lead active, purposeful lives."
Thus, the pageant replaced it with athleisure wear in hopes of showing their support for feminism and equality.
Lack of Diversity in the 2016 Top 5: The controversy surrounding Hay aside, the 2016 Miss Teen USA pageant also saw backlash due to the lack of diversity in the top 5 finalists of the night: Hay, Miss North Carolina Emily Wakeman , second runner-up Miss South Carolina Marley Stokes , Miss Alabama Erin Snow and Miss Nevada Carissa Morrow.

Chloe Campbell, the 14-year-old Colorado girl who had been missing for 10 days , was found safe on Monday, local authorities announced.
The teenager — who was last seen leaving a high school football game on Sept. 30 — was discovered around 5 p.m. at a home in Thornton, Colo., according to Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold.
Cops believe the teen ran away from home, but are investigating where she was and what occurred while she was separated from her family.
Her parents said they received a disturbing photo of their daughter looking “injured and unwell” from an anonymous source that raised their concerns for her safety.
Authorities flagged Campbell as “at risk” because they believed the teenager had no access to money or her medication, which she takes for physical and mental conditions, according to her family.
Campbell will be medically examined and appropriate social service support resources will be referred to her, Herold said.
Boulder Deputy Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said police have no evidence to support the claim that Campbell was in harm’s way or being held against her will.
“We have no belief at this time that she was held against her will,” he said.
Campbell also had no visible signs of injury when she was located in Thornton.
He added that the teen took “considerable steps” to avoid contact with her family and law enforcement.
However, police collected evidence — through social media and reported sightings — throughout the week that suggested that Campbell was alive and well.
“We, however, had indications that she was alive throughout the week,” Redfearn said. “Police are relieved that she has been located.”
He said it is too early in the investigation to say if there will be any persons of interest related to the teen’s disappearance.
“There’s a lot we still need to piece together,” Redfearn said.
The two men reportedly last seen with Campbell near Boulder High School are not believed to have been involved in her running away, he said.

The parents of a 14-year-old Colorado girl who has been missing since leaving a football game with two mystery men said they’ve been sent a disturbing photo of her looking “injured and unwell.”
Chloe Campbell was possibly intoxicated when she was last seen 10 days ago walking along the Boulder Creek Trail after the nearby high school game on Sept. 30, her parents told CBS News .
“She was described by eyewitnesses as being with two men — older men, too old to be in high school,” her dad, David Campbell, told the outlet.
Since then, the teen’s panicked parents have received a series of dubious messages claiming that their daughter was hiding out in Arizona — and possibly even dead, Boulder police confirmed.
Alarmingly, they were also sent a photo from an anonymous source that only raised their concerns for their daughter’s safety.
“She looked injured and unwell,” her dad told CBS, without elaborating on exactly what the ominous image showed.
Apart from that, they have also been sent Snapchat messages claiming to be from their daughter, but originating from a handle that they “are not familiar with,” her dad said.
Police also confirmed that they “have been unable to confirm if these messages are, in fact, from Chloe or true.” The force did not mention the concerning photo, however.
Police said that “investigators are growing increasingly concerned about the teen’s safety as it is believed that she has no access to money or her medication,” without detailing what the medication would be needed for.
“She may be with an adult male,” the force said, listing her as missing and “at risk.”
Campbell and his wife, Jessica Knape, now fear their daughter may have been taken against her will and may even have been trafficked for sex.
They also held out hope that messages claiming the teen had run away from home could be true, begging her to come home.
“Chloe, honey, we love you so much. You are not in trouble,” her mom said.
“If you can come home, boy, just please do. And if you can’t, we will not stop until we find you,” she said.
While issuing an appeal, cops stressed that the reported sightings and messages from “friends who appear to have been in contact with Chloe” meant that “this case presently does not meet the criteria for the issuance of an Amber Alert.”
