Many people believe they were born with the only pajamas needed for a good night’s sleep, but here’s the naked truth: No research directly confirms that sleeping in the buff leads to better slumber.

There is, however, some validity behind the idea of sleeping naked — namely regarding how a cooler skin temperature improves sleep quality.
So, should you consider stripping down at bedtime before sliding under the sheets? Let’s look at the potential benefits (and risks) with behavioral sleep disorders specialist Michelle Drerup, PsyD, DBSM .
There are some possible perks to nude sleeping … so, maybe? Here are a few reasons why you might want to slip off your clothes before slipping off to sleep.
Your body naturally works to lower its thermostat to doze off at night through its circadian rhythm , which regulates your sleep/wake cycle. The faster you cool off, the faster you typically catch some ZZZs, says Dr. Drerup.
That’s also one of the reasons why sleep experts recommended that you keep your bedroom temperature between 60 degrees Fahrenheit and 67 degrees Fahrenheit (15.5 degrees Celsius to 19.44 degrees Celsius) for optimal snoozing.
Ever toss and turn in bed because you’re too hot? Sleeping naked certainly removes any possibility of pajama-induced overheating interfering with a good night’s rest. It’s the absolute final move in shedding layers to stay cool.
“There’s no question that cooler is better than warmer for overall sleeping,” says Dr. Drerup.
And getting enough rest is key to … well, just about everything in day-to-day life. Waking up refreshed can help you manage stress more effectively, improve focus, boost performance and make you a more pleasant person.
Tight-fitting underwear can trap heat and moisture between your legs. What makes a yeast infection thrive? Yep — heat and moisture.
Sleeping naked (or even in loose-fitting cotton bottoms) allows for some air circulation around your vagina. Keeping the area cooler and drier may help reduce your chances of getting a yeast infection, too.
Heat isn’t a friend of male fertility. Regular exposure to higher temperatures for your testicles can cause sperm counts to drop. Wearing underwear that keeps things packed tight doesn’t exactly offer a cooling effect.
Studies show that men who wear boxers have a higher sperm count than their buddies in briefs. So if loose-fitting boxes help that much, imagine what 8 hours of no clothing might do.
Sleepwalkers may want to give the idea some extra thought to going au natural to avoid any potential awkward encounters, notes Dr. Drerup.
And if you’re not a fan of doing laundry, consider this: Your washing schedule for bedding may need to increase with more skin-to-sheet contact. (Gross fact: The skin cells you shed in a day can feed 1 million dust mites. You don’t want to turn your bed into their buffet.)
Going to bed “nearly” naked while wearing lightweight and loose-fitting garments can bring you similar quality sleep results as taking everything off. “Tank tops and boxer-style briefs don’t possess a ton of warming qualities,” says Dr. Drerup.
And while being cool is desirable for sleep, you also don’t want to be cold. There’s even evidence that wearing socks to bed to warm your tootsies can help you drift off to sleep.
Ultimately, what you wear to sleep is a personal choice. “There’s no proven benefit or harm to sleeping naked,” says Dr. Drerup. “Just do what feels right and then rest easy with your decision.”

Looks like sexy time has a whole new meaning.
A doctor on TikTok has gone viral for claiming that one should never sleep in the nude. Dr. Anthony Youn’s video entitled, “ Why you should never sleep without underpants !” has since gained over 11 million views.
“The average person passes gas 15 to 25 times a day, and this can happen while you’re sleeping,” the Detroit-based physician explained. “A scientific study proved every time you pass gas you’re spraying a tiny amount of fecal material.”
While that is gross but true, the 48-year-old doctor said underwear can help eradicate some of the germs.
“And that same study shows your tighty-whities will catch all of these particles,” he continued. “So, for the sake of your bed partner, please sleep with your underwear on.”
Youn also posted the video on his YouTube page . In a comment, he added more information regarding the use of female undergarments: “For women, if your gyno tells you to sleep without underwear then listen to them. For guys, put your tighty-whities on before bed.”
Fans couldn’t help but joke at the doctor’s statements and took to TikTok and YouTube’s comments sections to express their shock. One user wrote, “Fecal matter on the bedsheets. What a delightful thought. Thanks, underwear. You’re the real MVP.”
Another added, “I love you Dr. Youn, but when I am in my own bed my underwear or lack thereof is my own business.”
“I never sleep in the nude because I’m scared if the house catches fire I have to run outside naked,” joked one fan.
One teased, “Joke’s on you. I don’t have a partner.”
This isn’t the first time the plastic surgery doctor has gone viral for his medical advice . In another video posted in June, he called out the medical community over its failure to recognize a painful condition tied to breast implants known as “breast implant illness.”
“Breast implants can cause a constellation of symptoms in some women, called BII,” he wrote in the video’s caption. “Yes, I believe it’s REAL. But I also believe that most women do just fine with implants. But definitely not all.”
“Throughout my training, I was told it [breast implant illness] was hogwash — and that’s what I believed,” he told The Post at the time, also noting that his “most common procedure is breast implants.”

Anna Swanson isn’t squeamish about admitting that she usually sleeps without clothes.
The 25-year-old public health researcher said she’s just much more comfortable that way, especially in D.C.’s summer heat. She can crank the AC up a little less, and be more environmentally sensitive.
"It feels natural because it is natural and I enjoy it,” said Swanson, a Washington, D.C. resident.
It’s convenient, too. “You wake up the next day and just hop into the shower - there’s less thought to it,” she said.
According to a new survey, Swanson is in the majority, particularly in her Millennial age bracket. Two-thirds of Millennials report sleeping in the nude, the poll by the mattress review site MattressAdvisor.com found.
Joe Mercurio, a project manager with Mattress Advisor, said he stumbled across several articles suggesting that people sleep better without clothes – and he decided to find out more.
He surveyed over 1,000 people across the country, 58 percent of whom said they sleep in the nude. Nude sleepers also report better sleep quality than pajama-wearers.
Not surprisingly, men are more likely to sleep naked than women – though more than half of women still report sleeping without any clothes. Only 39 percent of Boomers sleep in the buff, compared with nearly 65 percent of Millennials, the survey found.
Relationships seem to relax people’s sleeping habits, with 72 percent of nude sleepers report being in a relationship, compared to only only half of single people. More than half of people who sleep nude report that their partner does, too.
Lack of clothes seems to promote love-making, with nude sleepers reporting substantially more sex than those who prefer to sleep clothed, the study found.
Sleeping nude can sometimes be embarrassing, according to the poll. About half of all nude sleepers admitted to awkward moments, including being walked in on – mostly by a friend, parent or roommate – being bitten by a bug, or having to leave the house unclothed during an emergency.
Nearly 70 percent of respondents who sleep naked said they do so because they’re more comfortable without clothes. About 58 percent said nude sleeping was relaxing, and 54 percent said it improves their sleep. (Roughly 15 percent said they sleep naked to keep their genitals “free and happy.”)
For those who prefer pajamas, their reasons ranged from staying warm, to anxiety about being seen, to “that’s how I was raised.”
Science may fall on the side of modesty, particularly in cold climates.
When we’re sleeping, we lose the ability to tightly regulate our core body temperature, said Alon Avidan, who directs the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center in Los Angeles. If that temperature drops too low, it’s likely to wake us up, disrupting sleep.
The ideal bedroom temperature for most people is 68 to 69 degrees – not to hot, not too cold, he said. Bedrooms should also be dark and devoid of distractions like televisions, laptops and work. “The bedroom should be available only for sleep, sex and sickness and no other activities,” he said.
Avidan said his own preferences change with the season. “I’m more comfortable with less gear, particularly in the summer,” he said. “But boy, when it’s wintertime, I have to have socks on. Just having cold feet is enough to cause me to have a night of bad sleep.”
Bottom line, Avidan said: sleep wearing – or not – whatever makes you most comfortable and most likely to get a full night’s rest.
