Six young men – some of them just teenagers – have been arrested by police after a girl was filmed being sexually assaulted in a shocking daylight attack.
A witness filmed the horrendous attack that saw a gang of men laughing and jeering as the ripped off the girl’s clothes.
Video of the assault, filmed in Jehanabad in Bihar state, India, was widely shared online, where police picked it up and began investigation.
Two of the attackers in the clip are still missing and being tracked down by police, senior officers said.
Nayyar Hasnain Khan has formed a special team of police to investigate the video, which has outraged thousands since it surfaced online.
In it, the girl is passed between the young men as she kicks and screams to try to get away.
One of the men lifts her feet off the ground as she tries to free herself.
No witnesses, including the person holding the filming the attack on a mobile phone, is seen doing anything to intervene.
Most of the attackers are teenagers, the police say.
A motorcycle belonging to one of them, which was also seen in the video, was a vital clue for the police.
The mobile phone with which the video was filmed has also been recovered by the police, they said.
According to the NDTV news channel, based in New Delhi, police are now carrying out door to door searches in the neighbourhood and talking to villagers to identify the rest of the attackers.
The girl and her family have also been offered counselling, officers said.
A First Investigation Report has been registered against the accused under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The incident comes in the middle of outrage and disgust across India over a series of child rapes.
The death penalty was recently brought in for child rape cases in Kathua, in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, after nationwide anger over the gang-rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl.
While a six-year-old girl in Odisha died in hospital this weekend after being raped, strangled and left to die by a neighbour.

A lone woman had her T-shirt and bra ripped off by a violent stranger who grabbed her from behind, covered her mouth with fish-smelling gloves and said, “don’t scream”.
The terrifying attack took place behind Thornaby Youth Club, on Thornaby Road , just after 6pm on Sunday.
The victim’s partner said his devastated girlfriend, who is in her 20s, hasn’t left the house since the incident, which happened after she’d taken a trip to the shops.
Her partner, who does not wish to be named, said: “She won’t go out the house at all - she’s too frightened.
“She had been to the Premier store on Lanehouse Road on Sunday at about 6pm.
“She was walking home behind Thornaby Youth Club, through the car park.
“Someone came up behind her, put his hand over her mouth and said, ‘don’t scream’.
“It was dark, and it all happened very quickly, but she thinks he was wearing all black - a black hoodie and a scarf over his face.
“His gloves smelled of fish or crabs.
“He came up behind, grabbed her, and ripped her clothes. He tore her t-shirt and bra off her.
“She didn’t get a good look at him, but she thinks he was about 5ft 9ins tall.”
Police arrived at the victim’s home shortly after the attack and have opened an investigation.
Possible suspects are yet to be identified and no arrests have been made.
Speaking to The Gazette, one resident who recently moved to the area close to the scene, said he didn’t hear anything on Sunday night, but had previously been warned by neighbours not to go out after dark.
He said: “It doesn’t surprise me given what people have said about not venturing out late on.”
The victim’s partner said: “Apparently someone saw a lad wearing all black lurking around the area before but you can’t say whether that’s just a coincidence.
“The police have been really good. They were here within five or 10 minutes.
“They’ve been round and taken all her clothes as evidence.”
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman confirmed officers are investigating the assault.
She said: “Police are investigating an incident during which a lone female aged in her 20s was approached by a man and was assaulted.
“This took place at around 6.05pm on Sunday, February 11, between Thornaby Youth Club, on Thornaby Road, and an alleyway behind.
