15 Musical Theatre Female Solos That Make Me Feel Things

Whenever I get the chance to listen to musical theatre recordings, I always look out for solos. I’m a big fan of solos. Probably because it’s the one time that we really get to see what’s going on inside that character’s head. He or she is speaking out what he or she’s thinking for the audience to listen to. Plus the solos always have the brilliant music, the spotlight, the acting.
Female solos are amaze balls. Well, for me, at least. It’s powerful and passionate. Musicals tend to have a prominent female solo, and I always fall in love with it. It’s where they put out all the emotions. (It’s also great for auditions, too.)
I have lots and lots of female solos that I like. Most of my favorite theatre songs are female solos, but fifteen songs really stood out for me. Each song had a different meaning, but all of them made me feel sad and wistful. These songs are also perfect to listen to whenever you feel down. It probably won’t make you feel any better, but it helps. Anything in the musical theatre world helps.
So, in no particular order, these are my fifteen musical theatre female solos that make me feel things.
Yep, this song might be really clichè and overrated. I know some people who don’t know a thing about this musical and could still recite the chorus of this song. But I don’t care. This song is beautiful.
Many of us could especially relate to this song. It’s about unrequited love, “friendzone”, the oh-my-god-why-can’t-he-love-me song. This is probably why it’s one of the most popular songs in the musical. At one point in our lives, there might be a time where the person that we like didn’t really like us that much. And it hurts. So much. Eponine can attest to that.
Plus, the music is beautiful. It’s like a lullaby. Once I hear the first note of the piano, my heart just feels full, and it takes me back to a lot of places in the past. The song is also useful for belting. Just, don’t use it for your next audition, okay? I heard most casting directors are so tired of hearing this song.
Most memorable lyrics: “I love him / But every day I’m learning / All my life / I’ve only been pretending”
2. Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again - The Phantom of the Opera
This song is one of the most emotional songs ever. This is the point in the musical I decide if the actress portraying Christine Daaè is good or not. If you’re singing this, you’d have to be really, really good in acting and singing. It’s one heck of a roller coaster.
It’s heartbreaking because Christine’s father is the closest family relative she had. She always finds solace in the arms of her father. She visits her father’s grave, looking for guidance with all the chaos that’s happening in the opera - with the Phantom and everything. In this song, a daughter is longing for her father’s care, knowing it’s impossible to happen.
I also love how the music builds up, especially in the last part. Then Christine swishes her cloak, turns around, and faces the audience. I can’t tell you how many times I put my blanket around me, and swished it around while lip-syncing to Sierra Boggess or Gina Beck.
Christine Daaè’s costume in this musical number is also very, very beautiful. (Haha, I just have to put it out there. I’m such a sucker with her costumes ahh.)
Most memorable lyrics: “Too many years / Fighting back tears / Why can’t the past just die?”
3. I Dreamed a Dream - Les Misérables
So I told myself that I would only pick one sad song for each musical, but Les Mis is too sad and too “miserable” to only have one song on this list. Plus, this song is one of the most iconic songs in the musical, and it’s going to be a sin if I won’t include it in this list.
I Dreamed a Dream is the first female solo in the musical Les Mis, and it tells us the tragically failed dreams of Fantine. In this powerful ballad, she sings about losing the love of her life, having her heart broken, and how her dreams all failed her. It’s quite depressing if you think about it.
But despite the sad message of the song, the music is overall beautiful and enchanting. It’s such a beautiful song to sing whenever you feel sad, or if you just want to belt something while you’re in the shower.
Most memorable lyrics: “I had a dream my life would be / So different from this hell I’m living / So different now from what it seemed”
4. As Long As He Needs Me - Oliver!
Ah, yes. Much like Fantine’s character, Nancy from Oliver! also has a liking towards bad boys. This song also proves that love is different for everyone.
This song can be found in the second act of Oliver!, where Nancy is pondering about her love for Bill, even though she’s in a very abusive relationship. She believes that she’s in love with him, despite everything, and that he loves her, too. Ah, but we all know that he murders her, though, and she was blinded by so much love for him to even notice what a horrible man he is.
I’m sure you’re familiar with Nancy and Bill’s relationship since most of us have read the Charles Dickens novel for our English class.
Still, this song is beautiful and is absolutely one of my favorites in the musical. It can’t get any sadder than this, I suppose.
Most memorable lyrics: “As long as life is long / I’ll love him right or wrong”
5. I’d Give My Life For You - Miss Saigon
Mother’s love is the best thing there is on Earth. I have a weird relationship with my own mother since we fight a lot like all mothers and daughters do, but I still love her, even though I may not say that out loud often.
This song, which closes the first act of Miss Saigon, is one of the most heartfelt “mother” songs in theatre. But it’s not just above Kim’s relationship with Tam since she sings the song to him. There were also portions in the song where she reminisces about Chris, which makes the song sad. We all know how that turned out.
But, yes, most of the song’s message is how Kim would give up everything, even her life, just to give Tam a good future, a better life than she had. Little do we know that she would actually kill herself in the finale.
The song may not be my favorite song in the musical, but it’s still breathtaking especially Lea Salonga’s version. Even though you’re only hearing the Original London Cast Recording, you’d still understand the passion in her voice. That’s how brilliant she is.
Most memorable lyrics: “Was he a ghost? / Was he a lie? / That made my body life and cry / Then by my side the proof I see, his little one / Gods of the sun / bring him to me”
Yes, this song is still about motherhood. I sometimes describe this song as a mixture of I Dreamed a Dream and a little bit of I’d Give My Life For You and As Long As He Needs Me. The song talks about Jenna’s failed dreams, the past, but also about her unborn child.
Let me just say that I’m such a huge fan of Sara Bareilles’ songs, and when I heard that she’s going to write a musical, I was ecstatic. Each song in the musical is obviously written by her - her trademarks all over the place. Even though Waitress’ story is typical and kind of ordinary, it was the songs that made me love it.
Especially this brilliant eleven o’clock number. It’s so heartfelt, passionate, sincere, and goddamn relatable. Put it together with Jessie Mueller’s earth-shattering vocals, and you have me sobbing my eyes out. It’s just so, so, so freaking good. It’s also great to sing out loud, haha. Those belts in the second chorus are so satisfying to listen to.
This song is one of my guilty pleasures, and I can totally listen to it without getting bored.
Most memorable lyrics: “She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie / She is gone, but she used to be mine”
7. So Big / So Small - Dear Evan Hansen
Mother Songs are just a huge deal in the musical world, huh? Don’t worry I won’t post anything about Gypsy here haha I’m not such a big fan of that musical. Anyway, Heidi’s solo in Dear Evan Hansen might not be the biggest song and the most prominent in the show, but it’s tear-jerking. Very, very much.
It also takes place right after Words Fail, which also makes me tear up. Heidi and Evan also had a recent misunderstanding in this part, but when she finally understood about the whole situation, she sang this song to him. In this song, she sings to him about their relationship ever since Evan’s dad left them. It’s a reassurance to Evan that she will always be there for him, no matter what happens.
It’s a great song dedicated for single mothers out there. Rachel Bay Jones totally deserved that Tony award for this song alone.
Most memorable lyrics: “Your mom isn’t going anywhere / Your mom is staying right here / No matter what / I’ll be here”
So, this is another song from a Pasek & Paul musical. I’m not so familiar with the story, though I know it’s based on a movie. I’ve listened to the cast recording, and - like I expected every Pasek & Paul musical - it’s super catchy.
Anyway, what I know about the musical is really limited. By that I mean, it’s just Wikipedia haha. Dogfight is some sort of game the Marines played. All they have to do is bring an ugly date to the party and then the Marine who has the ugliest date wins. It’s quite cruel, I know.
That was how Rose met Eddie. He brought her to the party, and when she found out about his real intentions, she got furious and went home. She, later on, sang this song at the end of the first act. Rose reflects on being used, and how he made her believe that she was pretty.
The song is perfect to listen to after a breakup. The lyrics are so simple, yet relatable. That’s how Pasek & Paul rolls - catchy music and relatable lyrics. Lindsay Mendez is also very talented. Her vocals fit right in the song.
Though this song might be not that deep, or classic, or popular like the other songs in this list, it’s relatable for the younger people because of the contemporary feels to it.
Most memorable lyrics: “Isn’t it funny you believed that it was real? / Pretty funny”
9. I Don’t Know How To Love Him - Jesus Christ Superstar
Ah, another unrequited love song. Aren’t we all suckers for that?
This heartfelt ballad from Jesus Christ Superstar is one of Andrew Lloyd’s Webber popular songs. I sometimes take the story out of the context when I listen to this song, because I always have trouble believing Mary Magdalene falling in love with Jesus. Well, maybe the musical only means it as a metaphor or something.
Anyway, it’s quite relatable for a lot of girls who experienced unrequited love, just like what I said about Les Mis’s On My Own. I sometimes sing this song dramatically and passionately in the showers haha. Try it, it’s really fun.
There was also an episode in Glee where Tina sings this secretly to Blaine, because she developed a crush on him. Though I do not support that relationship (Klaine forever, duh) I still applaud Tina for singing the song.
Most memorable lyrics: “I don’t see why he moves me / He’s a man / He’s just a man”
Need I say more about this song? I’m pretty sure 60% of the population here on Earth has already listened to the Original Broadway Cast recording of Hamilton, and this song has to be one of your Top 10s.
This is Eliza’s best song in the musical, and definitely one of the most heartbreaking songs ever. It takes place after Alexander published the Reynolds Pamphlet, where he confessed to having an affair with Maria Reynolds. In this song, Eliza shares her hurt and sadness about her marriage.
When I first listened to his song, there were a lot of scenarios in my head of how they choreographed this whole thing. And when I finally watched a bootleg video of it, I was (at first) disappointed. I was expecting more furious movements from Eliza. But later on, I realized the directing was actually perfect. Eliza’s so much more than the angry type. She learned how to move on with everything, and didn’t take shit from anyone. Ahhh, she’s the best.
But yes, this song is absolutely great. And have you heard the Hamildrop, First Burn, featuring five Eliza Schuylers? It’s so freaking catchy, and sassy - I love it! It’s my current ringtone haha.
Most memorable lyrics: “I’m erasing myself from the narrative / Let future historians wonder how Eliza reacted / When you broke her heart”
11. Still Hurting - The Last Five Years
Ah, yes. The opening song of this tragic musical. It’s the first song, and you already have your heart broken! Thanks, Jason Robert Brown.
Cathy’s first song in the musical is arguably the best and the most well-known song. It’s been covered by a lot of famous singers. I actually first heard it from Lea Salonga. After listening to her spectacular rendition, I researched about the musical, found a really crappy (but very, very useful and precious) bootleg of Sherie Rene Scott and Norbert Leo Butz, watched the entire thing, and broke my heart after two hours.
The lyrics and music are also very stirring and powerful. It’s hauntingly good. This is probably the ultimate breakup song. Just change the name “Jamie” to your ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend, then belt it out anytime you want.
But I just have to say that Cathy and Jamie’s relationship is such a mess. Learn from their mistakes, kids, don’t follow them.
Most memorable lyrics: “Jamie is over and where can I turn? / Covered with scars I did nothing to earn”
12. There Are Worse Things I Could Do - Grease
Whoo, not a big fan of Grease. The music and the dancing are pretty good and entertaining, but the whole story is weird. I used to like it when I was younger, but then as I got older, I started to look through it. Still, there are some things I love. It’s a classic, whether you like it or not.
Anyway, Hopelessly Devoted To You is my favorite solo in the musical, BUT it wasn’t included in the original cast recording. The filmmakers fit it into the film version because of Olivia Newton-John. The same thing goes for You’re The One That I Want.
Plus, There Are Worse Things I Could Do is more emotional, in my opinion. It makes me feel more things (as the title of this post tells us). Rizzo’s character is one of the most iconic characters, not only in the theatre world but also in the film world, thanks to Stockard Channing’s fantastic portrayal. The song truly shows Rizzo’s personality - she is more than a tough chick. The song is also very relatable to the young people, obviously since Grease is for teens.
Most memorable lyrics: “I don’t steal and I don’t lie / But I can feel and I can cry”
13. No One Else - Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812
Natasha’s solo song in this exceptional musical is my favorite song. It’s so… beautiful. I know I’ve been using that adjective quite a lot in this post, and believe me, I’m trying to look up other adjectives so I can better describe it. But there’s no other way to describe this song. It’s simply beautiful. Especially Denée Benton’s version. She is sooo talented. Part of the reason why I fell in love with this is because her voice is so young, so pure, so raw and real!
Before this song, Natasha visited her beau’s home to meet his father and sister. It wasn’t a successful one, because Natasha and Mary didn’t like each other. After she left, she found herself missing Andrey more than ever through this song.
It’s just pure love coming from Natasha. Not adulterated or anything, just pure. This song is not technically sad, but it kind of is because Natasha feels lonely without Andrey. If you’re missing your beau, just play this. You might miss him or her too much, though. And oh my God, the direction in this part! The blue lights from the “moonlight”, the snow… ah, this was so beautiful.
Most memorable lyrics: “Oh the snow in the moonlight / And your childlike eyes / And your distant smile / I’ll never be this happy again”
14. All That Matters - Finding Neverland
I should probably put this with the other mother songs up top, but then I’m too lazy to drag this up haha. But Sylvia is one of the best musical mamas, even though I didn’t put her there.
Anyway, this ballad is one of my favorites in Finding Neverland. Finding Neverland is an underrated musical. Sure, it has problems with development and all, but the songs are fantastic. It’s fun to sing along with, especially this one. And Laura Michelle Kelly’s vocals in the OBC is to die for. When will I hear her become a Disney princess or queen? It’s not too late!
Just like No One Else, this is not also a “really sad” song, compared to the other songs in this list. Still, it made me feel things. It helped me understand her character more. I haven’t found a proper bootleg of this musical, but I saw the movie it was based on, and I loved Sylvia’s character. And I feel this song really fit right.
Most memorable lyrics: “There’s an easier way / If I live for today / The beating of my heart / Is all that matters”
And I finish this list with a classic that was covered by a lot of famous singers - Barry Manilow and Barbra Streisand, to name a few. Barbra’s version is the most well-known, though.
Say what you want about the Cats musical. It’s annoying, it’s overrated, it’s boring, but hey, you can’t deny the fact that Memory is a goddamn good song, and very catchy. It’s perfect for auditions or competitions. Plus at the last stanza is vocally challenging, as it requires a steady and heavy belt. The lyrics are also powerful and strong.
This is also one of my favorite songs to sing in the shower as well. The “Touch me, it’s so easy to leave me” part will always be the most fun part to sing along with haha.
Most memorable lyrics: “I remember the time I knew what happiness was / Let the memory live again”
So there you have it - 15 female solos that make me feel things. These aren’t necessarily my favorite songs, though some of them are. It’s just when I listen to these songs, I become more emotional and dramatic than I usually am haha. Listen to these songs, and see what I mean.

Because you probably didn't learn this in school.
Fun fact: Masturbation can be awesome! In fact, a lot of teens do it, and enjoying it doesn't make you weird. So, why masturbate? Teen sex health outlet Sex Etc said it best. "Masturbation is a good way to learn about your body and your sexual feelings without the complications that can come when you have sex or do sexual things with someone else." You can feel good without having to worry about risks like unwanted pregnancy or contracting an STD.
Which is why, if you're wondering how it is that you get aroused or what arousal feels like, masturbation is a great way to dip your toe into learning about pleasure and your body. And I'm talking about more than just your genitals. Your bod has various erogenous zones, which are areas of your body that are more sensitive than others. Think: your ears, neck, inner thighs, nipples... the list goes on.
Beyond learning about your body, masturbating will also help you get insight into what settings get you in the mood. You might like to listen to sensual music and dim the lights before you try masturbating. Maybe there's a time of day that you feel particularly turned on. Perhaps there's literotica fan fiction that makes you feel all the things. Don't be afraid to experiment and see what works for you. There is no right or wrong way to masturbate!
