Covid Protocols
The protocols that we follow are based on CDC Guidelines and the American Camp Association. Please note the pandemic is a fluid situation and protocols will change before your camper’s arrival to camp. Please check the GSOFCT website and click on the CAMP tab prior to your camper’s arrival for the current COVID protocol updates.
Girl Scouts of Connecticut is closely monitoring the evolving guidelines provided by the State of Connecticut and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with regards to summer camp.
We have made the difficult decision to not offer day camp at Katoya (Milford) and Carlson (Bristol) for the summer of 2021. This is an opportunity for us to best focus our staff, programming, and resources while adhering to the safety guidelines for summer youth camps in Connecticut. Unfortunately, we know this decision will impact many of our girls who have made camp Katoya and Carlson their summer home. Summer camp and outdoor adventures are a time-honored Girl Scout tradition and one of the four core pillars of our Girl Scout Leadership Experience. We share in the disappointment this decision brings but hope girls will discover new opportunities and make new friends at one of our other Girl Scout camps.

Camp Operation under State COVID-19 Guidelines: We will send out an email in early June to all registered campers with further details, a daily packing list, etc. Below is basic information to assist you in making a decision about your daughter’s participation in summer camp this year.
Each camper and staff member will be required to have a health screening (looking for symptoms or exposure) and temperature check by camp staff wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Any camper or staff member with a temperature greater than 100.4 degrees will not be allowed at camp until cleared by a medical professional or a negative test result. We ask that parents stay in their vehicles at drop off and pick up in order to maintain social distancing and mitigate exposure. This will also aid in keeping the line moving as quickly as possible. To avoid delays, there will be staggered drop off and pick up times for each family. Staff will be responsible for checking campers in and out daily rather than parents as in previous years. This will minimize contact with pens and clipboards. Campers would be required to thoroughly disinfect hands prior to meeting up with their fellow campers and frequently throughout the day. Sanitizer, soap, and water will be available around camp.
Campers will be asked to keep their lunches in their backpacks instead of pooling together in a cooler. Each camper will be asked to use a frozen water bottle, ice pack or frozen juice box to keep their lunches cool. We recommend using an insulated lunch bag or small cooler, well-marked with the camper’s name. Campers will be able to store them in a shady location not with others lunches. Individually packaged snacks and juices will be available daily for each camper. There is no way to heat up a lunch this summer by microwave. We are not a nut-free camp. Laurel day campers will have lunch provided to them this summer.
We are anticipating 80 campers at each camp for each week. Campers will be placed in a group of sixteen campers with two counselors. This year, we are calling each group of sixteen a “small camp.”
Along with their counselor, girls will plan their programs and days based on their interests (within limitations as to rotate each group to swim and archery, when age appropriate). The small camp approach leads to deeper and richer relationships among the group and connections that will last a lifetime.
There will be 2 counselors per group. Each group will participate in activities such as swimming, archery, field games, crafts, environmental education and outdoor living skills. The group will need to practice social distancing within their own camp group. 3 ply masks are required to be worn daily by campers. Please check the CDC web site for updates on acceptable masks. We ask that you speak to your camper about this. Please plan to pack a mask daily for her use and show her how to put one on. Masks may be stored in a zip lock bag in her backpack. Staff will not be able to help her put the mask on.
Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting will happen throughout the day in high use areas, after each group and thoroughly at the end of each day. There will be a staff person hired to do the basic cleaning throughout the day.
Programming at camp All activities, including lunch, will happen with their small camp. Large group activities such as, but not limited to, starting and ending the day, all camp games, etc. will not happen this summer due to staying within the guidelines and practicing social distancing.
Materials that are used by all will be thoroughly cleaned before use by the next small camp, such as life jackets, games, balls, archery equipment, etc. Each camper will have their own markers for the entire week. Other craft supplies such as paint, glue, etc. will be handed out by the counselor.
Swim lessons will be offered this summer, girls will have the opportunity to have recreational swim daily (except for Merrie-Wood) under the guidance of certified lifeguards. Each camper will change in changing areas that will be cleaned after each use. We ask that your camper be able to put on and take off their own swimsuit and get dressed including socks and shoes without assistance. On the first day of each session, the campers will be swim-checked into their level of ability to swim. There will be two levels –shallow end or deep end. Limited numbers will use the pool or swimming area at any one time.
Overnights or late nights will be available this summer.
The horse program at Laurel Day Camp will operate this summer.
We will be taking group photos this year and email them to families at no charge. This way, you will have your camper’s photo to share with your family virtually instead of a printed photo.
Trading posts will be set up online through our shops so you can shop with your camper online and from the comfort of your own home.
Staff will be required to wear masks throughout the day and during activities where social distancing of 6 feet separation may be a challenge, such as when with their small camps are walking around camp, in an activity, etc. Waterfront staff will wear face masks when girls are not actively engaged in the pool. In accordance with the Office of Early Childhood, each family will also be required to sign an Informed Consent form in order to have your camper participate in camp.
Health forms are required for each camper prior to their arrival at camp. Please note that every year, a family must fill out the parent portion in full, sign, and date as well as having each camper sign their portion. The physician’s portion can be used from 2021 if your camper previously attended one of GSOFCT’s summer camps. Should your child have a plan of care and/or need medications administered during the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or as an as needed medicine (epi pen, inhaler, etc.), be sure to complete the Authorization of Administration form, accompanying the original medication with the original prescription attached. Please note that we cannot administer any medications without you and your doctor’s consent and a signature stating that your camper CAN self-administer. Upon registration, we emailed you a health form for 2021. If you have not received one, please contact Camping Services. You must bring this form on the first day of camp if not mailed by June 11! Campers without forms will not be allowed to stay at camp. This is a state regulation all the time, not just this year.
Should a camper or staff member be exposed to COVID-19, the entire group of campers, small camp and staff member of that group, would be asked to self-quarantine for 14 days before being allowed to return to camp. Campers and staff would not be allowed back to camp until after this quarantine was complete. Refunds for any potential exposure instances would be given on a pro-rated basis minus deposit and membership fees.
All summer camp registrations will be online. During the registration process, if you are not already a member of Girl Scouts, you can register your child to become a Girl Scout (required to attend camp). Payment is due in full by July 1. If registering after July 1, full payment is due at time of registration. If your family decides later to cancel your camp registration, we ask that you do so in writing by email to Camping Services at least two weeks prior to the start of your camper’s time at camp. GSOFCT will refund your registration fees minus the $25 non-refundable deposit. Should your camper begin attending camp and later decides not to continue, please email Camping Services to receive a refund on the unused portion of camp days. Please note that cookie credits have no cash value and are not refundable.

Financial aid is available on a limited basis. Both online registration and financial aid form are required to be considered. The financial aid application is within the registration form.  Remember, you must complete the registration form, and pay the $25 deposit per week that is required to process the camp registration and financial aid request; however, if your camper is not granted financial assistance, the deposit will be refunded. If you have questions about the deposit fee, please contact Camping Services.

Who are the staff members and how old are they?
Our camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, and caring adults who are selected based on their experience, ability to serve as positive role models, and their enthusiasm to work with children. Many of our staff return from year to year, but new staff are recruited as well. We also hire international staff via Camp America. Background checks and extensive interviews are completed during the hiring proces.
What training does the staff receive?
All staff are required to complete training before the first day of camp. Training includes activity programming, outdoor skills, health and safety, emergency procedures, age level characteristics, dealing with homesickness, and more. Staff who supervise and instruct specialty activities are required to obtain additional training and required licenses. Staff who are CPR and First Aid certified are always on site.
What is the ratio of staff to campers?
The staff to camper ration is based on the ages of the campers and follow GSUSA guide
