When I was little, my dad put me in competitive swimming classes. At around the age of 12, I was swimming 15 hours a week. I may not have been the fastest swimmer in my team, but I was not the slowest either. My forte was sprints and my best stroke was the butterfly. I hated anything that had to do with endurance and long distances.
When I was 13, on the day of a competition, my coach told me that I had to swim a 400IM. My heart started beating so fast and I went to my dad and told him I didn’t want to do the race. A 400 IM is a swimmer’s worst enemy when you are 13. It was a long distance kind of race. You had to swim 16 laps (four laps of butterfly, four laps of backstroke, four laps of breastroke, and four laps of front crawl). For people who do not swim, pacing yourself with the butterfly is not fun. By the time you were done with the first stroke, you were too out of breath to finish the rest of the race. I had never done a 400IM in practice before and this was going to be my first time.
I was sitting on the bench with a couple of my friends. All I could think about was how badly I was going to do on the 400 IM race. I was physically prepared but not mentally. I had my cap, goggles, and race suit on and a towel to cover myself. My legs were shaking, I couldn’t relax, and I was too stressed.
I had to pee. Damn it, why did it have to happen in the middle of a competition? The bathrooms were always filthy and disgusting. And putting on a swimming suit after you were wet is not the easiest thing to do. It’s tight and you don’t have any space to stretch in the bathroom stall. I always tried my best to avoid it. If I could, I would’ve peed in the shower, but it was full. Shit! I decided to go back on the bench and just wait till I get back home to pee. Bad idea. Shit happened. I didn’t literally shit, but I started peeing. I had a mesh towel covering me up (A mesh towel is basically a towel that doesn’t get soaked. It gets wet but not like the regular cotton towels). I didn’t know what to do. My friends were still sitting next to me talking. The pee didn’t stop. It kept going and going till the point where my mesh towel was soaked. I rushed to the showers and started cleaning my towel. I completely forgot about my race and told my dad that we had to leave and head home right that instant.
Since that day, I always peed at home right before a swimming competition, and I always brought a second towel to a competition, just in case. It was definitely one of the most embarrassing stories of my life.
