Chicago Public Library's 2017 Best of the Best Books List for Teen Nonfiction! Welcoming and inclusive of all self-identified girls, GIRL: Love, Sex, Romance, and Being You is an uncensored, unbiased, and fantastically relevant guide, jam-packed with what you want and need to know. A growing-up guide for the 21st century, GIRL covers what everyone is talking about—healthy sexuality, loving relationships, and gender fluidity, as well as thornier subjects such as STIs, consent, and sexual assault. Plus you’ll find self-reflection quizzes, cool resources, and must-read real-life stories from girls like you! From the Introduction: The language around sex and sexuality is so important. There are a lot of words, from anatomy to psychology to culturally evolving words. If you don’t know the definition of a word, don’t let this intimidate you. Many of the chapters start with defining words that are important to that particular topic; if you come across a word that you don’t know that isn’t defined in the book, just do a quick Internet search for it. The language around sexuality, particularly as it applies to identity, is changing quickly. If there are words about identity that feel outdated, replace them with words that resonate for you.
Chicago Public Library's 2017 Best of the Best Books List for Teen Nonfiction! **“Rayne offers an empowering, thorough, and inclusive guide to sexuality for ‘older teenagers who identify as female….’ Rayne’s book is notable for the breadth and depth of its discussions; readers seeking advice on or knowledge about virtually any aspect of sexuality and identity should find this to be a valuable resource.” —Publishers Weekly Starred Review “ GIRL is an inclusive guide for all self-identified girls to gender and identity, dating and romance, and healthy sexuality [by] a nationally recognized educator, trainer, author, and expert in sexuality education.” — Teen Vogue “This is a raw book that any teen girl will find enlightening. The book is definitely uncensored and offers a fully factual account of so many of the things that these young women will go through in their lives. The book goes through issues regarding relationships, sex, dating, romance and so much more. There are questions that will lead the reader on a self-reflective journey and some great lists and additional resources that many will refer back to again and again…. This is a great resource for all teen girls today!” —Dad of Divas "Designed to tackle topics that students don't cover in school…the book takes on a wide range of issues, from sexual consent and decision making, to body image and healthy relationships, and porn and masturbation…remarkably candid…[GIRL] asks young people whether they will make these decisions under pressure; by following their guts; or with careful consideration. The hope is that ‘outside the watchful eye of adult supervision,’ and with access to the right information, teens this summer will make the right calls." —NPR.ORG "This book is unique in that it is accessible and nonjudgmental to all who self-identify as a girl. It is diversity friendly and there is a lot of information packed into it.The sort of book that every teen girls needs to have by her bedside." — Sex Ed Rescue

I highly recommend this book to teenage girls and their parents everywhere. You'll notice, first of all, that the girls on the cover actually have heads, and faces--rare, if you look at books about teenage girls and women, which are mostly about controlling their bodies, not about navigating life. Then if you actually read the inside of the book, you will find that the content is even more valuable.

I am returning this book after giving a brief once over. I am all for girls getting factual information but I don't like any expert who normalizes porn when introducing the topic. Also I think the organization of the book could be better.

I had heard lots of great things about this book and so I read the book to decide if it would be something I should add to my library eventually.  GIRL is a great resource for anyone female identifying, or even if you think you might be transgender. This book has a chapter on everything, anatomy, cleanliness and puberty, sex, porn, and STI's. Everything. And there's information from every point of view, transgender, non-binary, straight and everything in between. It answers questions, shares personal stories and states the facts. I'm excited to buy this book someday, and to have it as a recourse for my future children. It's not a book that you have to read all at once if you don't want, you can read just specific chapters or start from the beginning. I rated the book 4 stars on Goodreads, and I recommend it to you all.

This is my first EVER Amazon review, because I can't stop talking about how incredibly wonderful this book is! Karen's writing is accessible, useful, nuanced, empowering, and deeply compassionate. As a sexuality educator for high school and college students, I've this is hands-down the book I recommend most to students - I often bring it to classes and allow students to flip through it before leaving. Just a few days ago, I had a student check it out after a class and say "I NEED this. Can I take a picture of it so I can buy it later?" Girls, young women, non-binary folks, and people with all different gender identities will find themselves somewhere in this book. It's reflective of real-life experiences, and uses prompts to invite the reader to think critically about their OWN experience and what choices might be best for them as they move through puberty, relationships, making sexual decisions, etc. There are even links to other resources (websites and books) that the reader can use to get more information. I can't recommend this book more highly. If you're in the comments section because you're deciding whether or not to buy this, here's your answer - BUY IT!

Girl: Love, Sex, Romance, and Being You is a must-read for all young people. The information is straightforward, thorough, and inclusive to everyone. Dr. Rayne has a brilliant way of talking about the complexities of gender and sexuality that is very comprehensive and understandable. Self-identities and expressions are discussed as fluid concepts, where it is normal to experience these differently throughout our life. Other powerful topics include self-exploration, self-pleasure, healthy relationships, and affirmative consent, while many common myths are debunked. Throughout the book, she encourages critical thinking skills and open communication. The information equips the reader with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure they have safe, healthy, consensual, and pleasurable experiences. The personal stories demonstrate honest narratives for young people; in them, we all share common experiences. It’s a how-to guide for understanding your body, identity, desires, pleasure, relationships, and how society and culture can influence these things. Young people are acknowledged for having the capacity of having intense emotions and desires. She clears up many commonly held misconceptions about female pleasure, and more specifically, teenage female pleasure. These discussions and information are the links to closing the pleasure gap between women and men. Dr. Rayne takes a more sex-positive approach to education as she examines the culture of sexuality and gendered assumptions that impact our everyday lives. Girl can help the reader successfully navigate through the tumultuous, exciting, confusing, trying, and wonderful adventures that are adolescence and young adulthood.

GIRL by Dr. Rayne is fresh, new, and needed for young adults. The book is extremely inclusive and uses gender neutral language to welcome readers of all identities. I am a psychotherapists and have had a large number of clients read this book and LOVE it. One of my favorite additions to this books are the journal entries written by many different perspectives. Cis, transgender, and non-binary folks will all find themselves represented in this book. GIRL uses a voice that will speak to most all identities while challenging them to critically think about their own lives. Dr. Rayne covers a large number of topics in this book including: consent, pleasure, self-affirmations, contraception, and gender identity to name a few. Dr. Rayne goes a step further and provides additional resources such as websites and other books for readers to continue their research. I can not recommend this book enough! It is must read!
