Ginny Weasley was one of the series' most iconic characters, but there were some disturbing moments with her— some of which make no sense.
The Harry Potter franchise has brought a flood of lovable characters and stories that never really left our hearts. The magical Wizarding world has been part of our childhood and adulthood, and it grew with us. As we grew with the story, we also grew with the characters, many of which left a mark on our hearts.
Ginny Weasley was one of the most iconic characters in the franchise, though hardly as well-portrayed in the movies. She was fierce, strong, and sweet. But during her entire life portrayed in the Harry Potter books, there were some disturbing and curious moments with her, some that make no sense.
Here are the 20 disturbing facts about Ginny Weasly that some of us forgot about or that make absolutely no sense.
We meet Ginny for half a moment in the first book, but it's only in Chamber Of Secrets that we really get to meet her as a character. It's in this book that we see Ginny go to Hogwarts for the first time and ending up nearly losing her life due to the intervention of the Dark Lord. She spent most of her first year possessed... and no one noticed!
Hogwarts is a relatively small school and Ginny a member of a closely-knit family. Her soul was getting sucked out of her for almost a year and no one paid enough attention to notice what was wrong.
We all know about Ginny's embarrassment when she sees Harry, back in Chamber Of Secrets . In fact, every time she ever came in contact with him, she could hardly get a word out, due to the massive crush she had on him ever since a young girl. We could be wondering exactly where this massive crush came from, because she basically didn't know who he was up until Chamber Of Secrets , so why does she have such an obsession with him before actually meeting him as Harry Potter?
It was only at the tender age of 11 that Ginny poured her soul into a diary, that so happened to be a Horcrux, a part of Voldermort's soul. This led to a horrible first year, in isolation, friendless, fearful, and suffering at the hands of Voldermort. In fact, she almost passes away due to this.
However, we don't ever see any PTSD or trauma come out of this. She continues her life normally, numb to what happened, not affecting her at all. The most we get of Ginny’s mental state, after possession, is her being angry at Harry for forgetting it happened during Order of the Phoenix .
The Harry Potter movies are great, no doubt, but they can't compare to the books, and one of the reasons why is the amount of things that happen in the books that are cut off from the movies. Ginny is one of the characters that gets the shorter end of the stick. We hardly ever see her or get to know much about her personality, and even when we do, she's always portrayed as nothing more than a secondary character. This, of course, leads to the absolute lack of chemistry between her and Harry. She's boring in the movies, considering how incredibly feisty and passionate she was in the books.
Ginny has a very healthy social life, especially in the dating department. There's nothing wrong with that, and I'm glad she wasn't fixated on Harry to the point of not experiencing dating anyone else and making the most of her teenage years. However, in the world of Harry Potter , hardly anyone ever dates, which is understandable considering the number of classes they have, having to control their magic, separate dorms, strict rules, and so on - so why is Ginny the only character we see having such a juicy dating life? What was her secret?
Do we even have to talk about how bland and uninteresting Ginny's first boyfriend, Michael Corner, is? Ginny always seemed to desire excitement and danger, something different, so why exactly did she end up with Michael Corner in the first place? It doesn't seem like the kind of boy she'd have a crush on, at all. Maybe this relationship only meant to showcase that people from different houses could date. Seems like a waste of Ginny's time.
Luna Lovegood is definitely one of my favorite characters in the franchise so knowing that there is a friendship between Ginny and Luna might seem like a moment of happiness to me and every other reader, due to how strong both characters are. However, it's through Ginny that Harry meets Luna as Looney Lovegood, showcasing how Ginny doesn't think highly of the other girl. Luna talks a lot about Ginny and how nice she is but the friendship seems to be quite one-sided. Luna thinks of Ginny as a best friend but we rarely even see them together. Ginny should really treat Luna better.
As Harry is looking for partners for the Yule Ball, it's discovered that Ginny had already been asked by Neville Longbottom, showcasing how brave he actually is to have done something that neither Harry or Ron were able to do: ask a girl out. We also know that Hermione was Neville's first choice, but she already had a date, so Ginny was the second choice, to which she agreed. However, there was no indication that the two knew each other, so it really only makes sense for the people watching the movies or reading the books, not for Neville or Ginny, making it an empty gesture that makes absolutely no sense.
At the end of Prisoner of Azkaban, the long-suffering Ron finally gets a tiny little owl from Sirius Black. However, it's not until the Globet Of Fire that his owl gets a name: Pigwidgeon. Sounds like the name of a Pokémon, doesn't it? This name actually came from the creative mind of Ginny, with no explanation of where such name came from. Despite not being his owner, Pig responds to the name he gets from Ginny. There was no trace of such name in the franchise's lore, so we're left to wonder where Ginny came up with such a name.
We can all talk about how Ginny is great because she's Harry's love interest and the one that ends up with the Chosen One, but Ginny is so much more than that. She is one of the very few characters in the franchise to lack any flaws whatsoever. She is beautiful, popular, smart, an incredible flyer and Quidditch player, she can stand up for herself, and she can fight. However, there is one thing that is known for sure: she has a short fuse and can lash out in anger. But when we do see her angry, she never has any outbursts, she is only portrayed as sassy and fierce, proving once again she is written as the perfect character, with no absolute flaws.
We all know how the franchise ends (up until Cursed Child ), with Harry and his friends, including Ginny, now as adults, sending their children to Hogwarts. This is the scene where we find out about their children's names: Albus Severus, Lily, and James Sirius, in honor of some of the most important characters in the franchise and in Harry's life.
Of course, we can discuss how ridiculous it was to name one of his sons Albus Severus, but what really grinds my gears is how none of their children have any names that remind us of Ginny and her familys. Even after the war and ending up with Harry, she still continues to be portrayed as nothing more than a secondary character, even in her own life.
Given the books are from Harry's point of view, it's obvious that we don't get much insight on interactions between Ginny and Cho. However, when we do have a glimpse of those interactions, Ginny always speaks to Cho in a highly dismissive manner. The most notable example is during Deathly Hallows when Cho volunteers to take Harry to Ravenclaw Common Room.
Ginny steps in and forces Luna to go with Harry, clearly out of jealously of Cho and Harry’s relationship. But a war is ongoing, and the only reason he needs to go to the Ravenclaw Common Room is to destroy Voldemort, so is it safe to say she is reading too much into it, in a somewhat controlling and psychotic way?
In the Half-Blood Prince book, we learn (repeatedly) that Ginny is the coolest girl in school. Her dating life becomes very juicy and she seems to be thriving at Hogwarts. Harry overhears a conversation with a group of Slytherins where the topic of conversation is how amazing and attractive Ginny is, making it obvious the sixth year at Hogwarts is definitely Ginny's year.
This comes completely out of nowhere with her popularity exploding out of thin air. It's the year Harry gains feelings for Ginny, which can explain how he sees her in a much better light, but it doesn't explain why up until now Ginny was almost invisible, and suddenly, she was everything at school.
Harry makes a point of remarking on how many of Ginny’s own friends she has in Half-Blood Prince , but none are introduced or named. In fact, it seems like the closest she has to a best friend is Hermione. They seem to always know intimate things about each other, being the first to know about impacting news about one another - but they are hardly ever seen together. Somehow, they manage to keep this friendship almost a secret from Harry and Ron, and we're left to wonder why and how.
When it comes to curses in the Wizarding World, you'd never think one of them would be associated with the perfect and sweet Ginny Weasley. The Bat Bogey curse is never actually shown in the movies or performed in front of Harry, but it does exactly what it is meant with its name: it makes bats appear from a place they shouldn’t appear from in the human body. It's not a curse you can learn at Hogwarts, so why is it so associated with Ginny and why does she perform the hex so often?
Harry doesn’t attend Hogwarts in what would’ve been his seventh year, and in his return, he learns what the other students have gone through, which involves torture by Death Eaters. Harry learns all this information from Neville, who's been leading an underground resistance against the corrupt regime, and, of course, he appears beaten and bruised. Ginny is also part of the resistance, and like any other should have the same signs of torture, but she doesn't! She looks normal and untouched, like the Death Eaters decided to skip the torture entirely when it came to her. Why was she spared?
In Order of the Phoenix , Harry and his friends end up in the Ministry of Magic and find their way to the Department of Mysteries. While there, they encounter an odd room with a veil hanging in the center, where voices of dead loved ones can be heard by those that have lost someone. Luna, Harry, and Neville, having lost important people in their lives, are fascinated by the veil, having to be pulled away from it due to the danger it brings to whoever gets close. But Ginny also displays the same fascination... why? At this point she hadn't lost her parents, brothers, or anyone close to her.
During Order Of The Phoenix, it comes as a surprise to everyone that Ginny is an excellent flyer. She even joins the Gryffindor Quidditch team and becomes an all-star player. This came as a surprise to many, including her family, that had no idea she could fly so well on a broom. Hermione explains that Ginny has been sneaking into the Weasley’s broom shed for years and secretly training herself to fly.
This doesn't really seem plausible though, considering how close the family is, making it impossible for her to sneak away for years to fly on her own, especially considering the location of the Weasley's house. We're left to wonder exactly how she developed this specific skill in the first place...
We all knew about Ginny's obsession with Harry ever since that scene on Chamber Of Secrets when Harry drops by the Weasley's home. It was apparent she had a crush on him since young and those feelings further developed as the years went by. However, Harry never seemed to realize this (or care), having crushes on other girls, such as Cho Chang, and never paying a second glance at Ginny. However, in Half-Blood Prince , Harry's feelings for Ginny appear without notice, coming as a surprise to the audience. Sudden and suspicious? Very much so.
The disturbing part of this fact is how stupid it is. At the end of Half-Blood Prince , Harry decides to do the "heroic" thing (although dumb) of breaking up with Ginny in order to protect her from harm. It was public knowledge that they were dating, even to Harry's enemies, so why this was necessary goes beyond my comprehension. Not only that but Harry decides it's a good idea to downright deny his feelings for Ginny. However, what he failed to realize was that Ginny was going to fight Voldemort, no matter what. She's a tough cookie and nothing will stop her from fighting in the Wizarding War.

It is in this event where things take a turn, where the once suppressed Mutated Ones of the Wizarding World begin to take back the power they were once known for, all the while in the amidst of the Ministry of Magic in high denial over Lord Voldemort's return, learning of the Foot and the Rank based on whispers that they were in with the Dark Lord.
Mix this with Severus and Remus's goal in getting Harry Potter out of not just the abusive home he was in with the Dursleys, but to have him to no longer be the sacrificial lamb they know he's pinned to be, all in the goal to have the Boy-Who-Lived be with his mate!
