Gina Rodriguez felt “guilty for masturbating” when she was younger.
The 32-year-old actress was raised in a purity culture, and has admitted she would often feel bad for indulging in self-pleasure, and would worry that she masturbated “too much” and lasted “too long”.
She told the latest issue of Bust magazine: “In all honesty, I used to feel guilty for masturbating. Oh my god, this extreme guilt! And that lasted way too long. Or maybe I masturbated too much. It’s ok to look back in retrospect and be like, it wasn’t good that I felt bad about touching myself.”
The ‘Jane The Virgin’ star also told the publication she follows the feminist movement, and believes that “everyone should be a feminist.”
Meanwhile, Gina admitted earlier this year that she suffers from anxiety, as she posted a short “ten second video portrait” with her 1.7 million Instagram followers.
She wrote alongside the video: My beautiful friend @antonsoggiu came to visit from Norway and he included me in his magical art. TEN SECOND PORTRAITS. It’s always great to be in front of his lens but this time it was just me.
“Bare and exposed in the streets of la. No makeup. No styling. Just me. I suffer from anxiety. And watching this clip I could see how anxious I was but I empathize with myself.
“I wanted to protect her and tell her it’s ok to be anxious, there is nothing different or strange about having anxiety and I will prevail. I like watching this video. It makes me uncomfortable but there is a freedom I feel maybe even an acceptance. This is me. Puro Gina. (sic)”
She said previously: “This day and age of Photoshopping and transforming oneself and filtering and filtering and filtering, it really feels good when a photo can capture my heart, my body, my spirit, without having to gloss over it. Let me keep my curves, my birthmark. I want to look like myself ...
“People will say you are not attractive. People will say you are not skinny enough, not tall enough, not thick enough, not curvy enough, not white enough, not brown enough, not this enough. Well, I really hope you don’t feel that way about yourself, because then we’re all screwed.”

Gina Rodriguez is winning our hearts— per usual —as the cover star of Bust ’s August/September 2017 issue. In the accompanying interview, the Jane the Virgin star not only kept it real about masturbation but also talked about the need for more diversity on both sides of the camera in Hollywood.

The actress revealed that she was raised in a purity culture that made her feel guilty about self-pleasure. “In all honesty, I used to feel guilty for masturbating. Oh my god, this extreme guilt! And that lasted way too long. Or maybe I masturbated too much,” she admitted. “It’s ok to look back in retrospect and be like, it wasn’t good that I felt bad about touching myself.”

Rodriguez, who was seen at the Women’s March earlier this year, also suggests, “everyone should be a feminist.” In January, she joined thousands of protesters in Los Angeles to stand together for women’s rights while wearing a “Torch Your Bra” t-shirt. “Sí se puede (Yes, you can),” the 32-year-old tweeted with a picture in her protest tee.

Furthermore, the actress has a message for Latinos who want to see diversity in front and behind the camera. “Latinos make up 38 percent of the box office every weekend. That’s a lot!” she told Bust . “So if you want to see Latinos in big studio films, and they don’t exist in them, don’t see them, because in this industry, money talks more than anything.”

Earlier this week, Rodriguez similarly touched on the subject of diversity in Hollywood tweeting about the lack of Latino superheroes. “Marvel and DC are killing it in inclusion and women but where are the Latinos?! Asking for a friend…” she wrote. This post led the actress’ fans to start rooting for her to bring DC Comic’s Green Lantern Jessica Cruz or Marvel’s new queer heroine America Chavez to the big screen.

Gina Rodriguez, star of Jane the Virgin is always candid about issues that personally affect her. She’s spoken openly about body issues, having an underactive thyroid, and even the insecurities she feels on an everyday basis. Now, she’s getting a little personal and opening up about growing up in a conservative household and feeling guilty about masturbating and wanting to play a character that is bisexual.

“In all honesty, I used to feel guilty for masturbating,” the “Jane the Virgin” star revealed in the August/September issue of Bust magazine . “Oh my god, this extreme guilt! And that lasted way too long. Or maybe I masturbated too much!”
Rodriguez, who is currently dating fellow actor Joe LoCierco, has since moved past the guilt.
“It’s OK to look back in retrospect and be like, it wasn’t good that I felt bad about touching myself. And it isn’t bad that I want to share my love with my boyfriend. I’m 32 years old, I’m an adult, I can do that!” she said.
Following her split from “House of Lies” star Ben Schwartz , Rodriguez recalled the moment she fell for her beau of nearly a year.
“The second time I saw him, I didn’t recognize who he was. He came in through the door and I was like ‘Good God!’ and I fell into his eyeballs,” Rodriguez explained. “On the fourth day [that we saw each other at the gym], he asked me out, and I have been dating him ever since. Now I know what it means to date your best friend.”
LoCierco appeared on “Jane the Virgin” in 2017 as “Prince Charming.”
