Ghost of Yotei: Mysterious Figure Spotted on Hokkaido’s Sacred Mountain

KUTCHAN, Hokkaido – A chilling legend has resurfaced in Japan’s northernmost island as multiple hikers and locals claim to have encountered the infamous 'Ghost of Yotei' near Mount Yotei, a dormant volcano often called 'Ezo Fuji' for its resemblance to Mount Fuji.

According to eyewitnesses, the spectral figure appears as a tall, shadowy entity draped in tattered robes, silently wandering the misty slopes of the mountain. Some describe an eerie, whispering voice accompanying the apparition, while others report sudden drops in temperature when the ghost is near.

Legends and History

Local folklore speaks of the Ghost of Yotei as the restless spirit of a lone samurai who perished on the mountain centuries ago. Some versions of the tale claim he was a warrior betrayed by his lord, while others say he was a hermit who vowed to protect the sacred peak even in death.

'This isn’t the first time people have seen something strange on Yotei,' said historian Kenji Sato. 'Stories of the ghost date back to the Edo period, but sightings have increased in recent years, especially near the old pilgrimage trails.'

Recent Sightings Spark Debate

Last week, a group of climbers reported seeing the figure just before dawn. One hiker, Takashi Morita, captured a blurry image on his phone—a shadowy silhouette against the morning fog.

'I thought it was another hiker at first, but then it just… vanished,' Morita said. 'The air turned ice-cold, and I felt like something was watching me.'

Skeptics argue that the sightings could be due to natural phenomena, such as shifting fog or wildlife. However, believers insist the encounters are too consistent to dismiss.

Tourism and Supernatural Interest

The rumors have drawn thrill-seekers and paranormal investigators to the area, with some tour operators even offering 'ghost hikes' for adventurous visitors. Local shrine priests have cautioned against disturbing the mountain’s spirits, urging respect for Yotei’s sacred history.

Whether myth or reality, the Ghost of Yotei continues to haunt the imaginations of those who tread its slopes. As the nights grow longer, the legend only deepens—whispering through the winds of Hokkaido’s most enigmatic peak.
