A futuristic, police/noir thriller, set around the mid-21st Century, dealing with the reality of corporate power structures, and cyber terrorism, against a backdrop of technological advancement, and transhumanist cyberisation, in a Neo-Japanese state.
According to my google-fu, GITS was first published in English by Dark Horse Comics in early 1995, in an 8-issue run. Later that year it was released in a book form... I also found references to an 'uncensored' version released by Dark Horse in 2004...
Were the original 1995 releases censored, then, and only the 2004 release was uncensored? Or are all these early releases uncensored?
I'm wanting to acquire the uncensored version for my collection, and want to make sure I go hunting for the correct edition...
Thanks to rbrumble's ISBN information, and GodLikeCat's YouTube video link corroborating that the 2004 release was the only real uncensored English release of the GITS manga, I tracked down what seems to be a good quality copy for sale on AbeBooks, and ordered it.
Going price seems to be $75-120, depending on the seller, by the way, in case anyone was wondering.

Apparently there is only 1 complete and uncensored version of Vol 2. Man Machine Interface... the special definitive edition released by Masamune in the Ghost in the Shell Man Machine Interface Solid Box. It contains a handful of model minis, some special art books, and two definitive Japanese editions of both Vol 1 and Vol 2...
They tend to go for between $200 and $500.
However, it appears that good deals can be found, presumably because they are just so rare that there isn't enough awareness to support enough demand to keep prices high 100%...??
There appear to be a couple copies for good prices from Amazon 3rd party sellers. I just ordered one...🤪😳
So, I ordered The Solid Box from an Amazon 3rd party, as I mentioned above, and it came today (almost a month early)... It is exactly what I was hoping it would be, and it's awesome. Plus, it has a large print format version of both Ghost in the Shell as well as Man Machine Interface, both uncensored, as was expected.
All in all, if you can get a good deal on one of these things, I recommend it. Definitely one of the most fun things I have opened in a long time!
There has been quite some changes. Two sexualized scenes were removed, but the censored version has additional pages too. You can find a complete comparison between the "standard" version and the uncensored one (solid box) here .
If I'm honest, I wasn't aware it was censored either, until I started looking into it during this whole post-conversation.
There's a video that was linked in the comments... I think it was from GodlikeCat... The guy in the video explains it all in quite a bit of depth.
Apparently, there was a topless scene, as well as some bizarre sexual-interrogation scene, which Masamune originally drew, but which practically never actually was releases. (Presumably everyone got wind of the scenes' existence somehow, though.....??)
Anyway, apparently the full and original version was only released once, in the "Solid Box" special release, in 2000.
There's probably more to the publication story, but that's what I was able to suss. I don't think too many people care enough about 2.0 to really hunt it down too often... which is a pity. I really like it...
Amazing, I just checked what version I have. Apparently, I got the Dark Horse 2nd Ed in 2013 for £ 14. Not a bad investment it turns out :).

Everything is censored except the 2004 dark horse 2ND edition. The one and only time it was published in the USA in its entirety. It’s what’s so crazy about all the published editions that followed. ‘Deluxe.’ Perfect. Complete. All false advertising. Color pages of the lesbian boat orgy. Mycomicshop has a listing for it that you can sign for up for notifications.
I also found the 2004 2nd ed on AbeBooks... went ahead and ordered it there.
As far as the Deluxe Kodansha editions go, what I have hears was that they actually wanted to do a definitive, uncensored version, but that Masamune himself declined...🤷♂️

I think I have the same version and mine is definitely censored. To be sure we're talking about the same thing, I mean mine is missing the couple pages in chapter 3 where Motoko is on a cyberspace vacation with a couple of her friends. Basically it turns into a yuri hentai for those couple pages. I think it would be between pages 56 and 57 in my copy.
Really??? That's super interesting... Could you post some pictures of the publication data at the front? Everything I have heard says all the Kodansha versions are censored...
For that matter, I'd be interested to see the uncensored page as well, to see if there are any differences....

As far as I know, the Spanish edition published by Planeta had always been uncensored up until 2017.
Even the individual issues dark horse published are censored. The first publication of the TPB is censored. When they republished in 2004 for some reason it included the 3/4 pages in chapter 3. One and only time in the USA.

I remember I used to have a 2004 uncensored book. I think I got it out like a Spencer’s gifts or Hot Topic at the mall. I did eventually sell it though, because I was upgrading to the box set, didn’t realize that what I had was somewhat rare though. Oops.

I just pulled my uncensored copy off my shelf to help you out. The cover looks like this and there's a removable sticker on the uncensored version that looks like this . Here's the publ data and ISBN info for you to narrow your search down.

You do realise the difference is only two pages? Which you can find online fairly readily?
I mean, it's not like it's bad, do get it if you must, but you shouldn't feel you're missing out on anything enormous with the regular version.

Go on Amazon and look for the GITS manga. Read the reviews. The top one is one complaining about how the newest version is censored and he links to the uncensored version. There, you'll find copies.
Do note that this version is no longer in print and will be much more expensive to obtain.
