Getting Pregnant With Pull Out Method
Medically Reviewed by Brunilda Nazario, MD on July 24, 2020
The pull-out method is a form of birth control in which a man takes their penis out of a woman's vagina before they ejaculate so fewer sperm get inside. It’s also known as coitus interruptus or the withdrawal method.
It isn’t as easy as it sounds. The man needs a lot of control to time it right. It doesn't work if they can't feel when they are close to orgasm or if they're so caught up in the moment that they don't pull out in time.
The best ways to use the pull-out method
Here are some tips to make it work better:
Pulling out isn’t a very reliable way to prevent pregnancy. It works about 78% of the time, which means that over a year of using this method, 22 out of 100 women -- about 1 in 5 -- would get pregnant . By comparison, male condoms are 98% effective when used correctly every time.
Can you get pregnant if your partner pulls out?
Yes, you can. But the pull-out method may work better than doing nothing.
Does the pull-out method prevent STDs?
No, it doesn’t. You can still get a sexually transmitted disease (STD) such as HIV , chlamydia, gonorrhea , herpes, or syphilis while using this method.
Couples may choose this method if they wouldn’t mind a surprise pregnancy or because:
Not only is it not very effective, withdrawal isn’t a good method of birth control because:
If you’re worried that you or your partner could be pregnant, talk to your doctor about emergency contraception.

Anyone get pregnant again or initially using the pull out method? But like you really really knew he didn’t accidentally come early? Thanks!
I'm having a bit of a meltdown. I'd like some advice on experience if any of you ladies have any...Also, precursor to this post- this isn't a "had unprotected sex" or "used pull out method" post (nothing wrong with those, though). I'm taking...

I know everyone says it can happen and there's possibly semen in the pre-cum but I've never known of anyone that has actually gotten pregnant that way. I'm EBF and haven't gotten my period back yet but did have a little bit of cervical mucus for a couple of days. Well hubby and I DTD two days in a row and we didn't use a condom so he pulled out. Y'all I'd be totally panicked if I got pregnant. I know it shouldn't be a shock though if I'm gonna have sex & not protect. Just wondering if it's actually happened to anyone.
I did. And I know like 5 people who did as well.
My husband and I have been using the 'pull out method' for about 8 years. And exclusively. As in no condoms or any other form of bc. We literally got pregnant the very first month after we got married and decided he no longer had to pull out! Then immediately went back to pulling out after that baby. Then we decided it was okay if we got pregnant again and boom got pregnant on the 2nd month of not pulling out. So IMO it is effective if your hubby is really good about knowing when it's time.
Side note I actually read an article the other day about how the 'pull out' method can actually be as effective as other forms of birth control IF your partner has a good sense of when he is about to orgasm and pull out with plenty of time. Apparently for some men it's really hard for them to determine when and they can't get it out in time. I'll see if I can find the link
Same here, been doing the pull out method for 15yrs now . The only time I fell pregnant with my four was probably the only time he actually released inside me.
We use pullout like you mentioned and have never gotten pregnant.
This how we are too. It works for us.
Like the exact same story for us except seven years instead of 8- I actually though I was going to have a hard time getting pregnant
Pull out method is fine and safe and in fact it is more enjoyable to release on surface
I didn't! Me and dh have been together 7 years and used pull out exclusively for 5. I got pregnant the first try with my 3 year old and first try with my 3 month old. That being said I normally take a pregnancy test every month anyways just to make sure, with both my babies I bled for a week after I found out I was pregnant so that's not a reliable thing for me lol
Hubby and I used pullout method until we decided to try for this little guy and it's always worked for us. I also used it in my last relationship before I met my hubby for 2 years and never got pregnant
Ya...my ex-husband & ex-friend. True story
Most of the people I know who got pregnant accidentally used the pull out method. It's generally not very reliable.
I got pregnant with the pull out method. Maybe if I had tracked when I was ovulating and didn't have sex then maybe I would have gotten pregnant but it's a big what if. I will not be using the pull out method ever again.
Don't get me wrong I love my lo more than life itself but wish I could have been in a better place in life than when I got pregnant
Me! Worked great for over four years but one slip up is all it takes.
This is exactly how I got pregnant. Completely unplanned but ya know, should of known better.
I got pregnant with the pull out method. Like what someone already said, I won't be relying on that method alone anymore.
