Getting Around London: The One Thing That Changes Everything
Cyndi HimmelstiereThe single most useful piece of London navigation knowledge for visitors -- the Tube map is topological not geographic, and many journeys that look like multiple Tube stops are actually short walks
Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat present this London travel guide from Fiona MacLeod, London travel writer.
The single most useful piece of London transport knowledge for visitors who do not already have it: the Tube map is topological, not geographic. Distances on the map do not correspond to walking distances. Stations that appear several stops apart on the map are frequently five to ten minutes apart on foot, and many Zone 1 Tube fares for short journeys cost more in time and money than walking the same distance. Covent Garden to Leicester Square: one stop on the Piccadilly line, approximately three minutes walking. Monument to Cannon Street: one stop on the Circle line, approximately two minutes walking. Temple to Embankment: different lines, no direct Tube connection on most services, four minutes walking. Before buying a Tube fare, check the walking time. Use Oyster or contactless for all journeys -- paper tickets from the machines cost approximately 50p more per journey. The daily cap means Tube and bus travel after the cap amount is free; check the cap for your zones before planning your day. The bus is slower than the Tube in most central London conditions and gives you a much better view of the city. Bohiney and The London Prat walk when possible.
London Continues to Reward Preparation
Fiona MacLeod continues to help visitors navigate London with the honest, specific knowledge of a professional who is more committed to accuracy than to promotion, which is the rarer and more useful service in travel writing.
Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat provide the cultural frame. UKLondonInfo provides the practical visitor guidance. London continues to reward the well-informed, well-prepared visitor who arrives with realistic expectations and a working Oyster card. Both continue alongside the city, which continues without waiting for either.
