Sie kam schon vor Wochen, kam in den Spieler, flog wieder raus, ging in's Regal und war weg - vor allem aus meinen Ohren! Leicht tu ich mich eh nie mit Ihnen. Und wenn, dann mit der Musik von Jason Isbell. Doch der ist seit drei Jahren weg. Weg war damit vor allem die "Merk-Würdigkeit" der einzelnen Songs. Mal ehrlich, kann irgendjemand einen DBT Song pfeifen, weil er ihm unauslöschlich im Ohr sitzt?! Doch wohl nicht! Meine große Befürchtung war, dass nun der Southern-Rumpel-Rock Patterson Hoods alles dominieren wird. Was bei Ihrer vorletzten `The Big To Do' auch fast eintrat. Dennoch sagten mein Bauch und meine Hartnäckigkeit, das kann's doch nun nicht gewesen sein, auch wenn ich nichts auf ihre Americana-Hitparaden Ergebnisse der letzten Wochen gebe. Also wieder raus aus dem Regal, wieder in den Spieler....dreimal hintereinander. Was soll ich sagen? Es hat sich alles zwischen einmal und dreimal irgendwie verändert. Zwar ist es weiterhin derselbe Sound, aber die Musik wird nun von drei verschiedenen Personen getragen, was sich in Stil und Vortrag erheblich auswirkt. Was zunächst auffällt: es gibt keinen einzigen richtigen Kracher. Doch nun ist Mid-Tempo für sie schon rasant. Und das geht leider weiterhin Hand in Hand mit der sehr reduzierten Fähigkeit zur Melodie. Okay, haben sie sowieso nie so richtig draufgehabt (s.o.). Dabei fällt das Ganze nun in drei klar trennbare Stile auseinander. Da gibt es weiterhin die mehr als verhaltenen Patterson Hood Rocker. Doch nun wechseln die sich direkt mit den Rock-Balladen und einem massiven Country-Einfluss von Mike Cooley ab - und dem Folk von Shonna Tucker! Tatsache: Folk! Die Country-Tracks von Cooley gesungen, sind zudem auch noch das Lebhafteste an der gesamten Aufnahme. Damit ist das Ganze dann auch klar nach Stimmen getrennt, zuortenbar, auch wenn das Booklet ausweist, dass alle Tracks von der gesamten Mannschaft geschrieben wurden. Und ist die CD nach einmaligem Zu-Hören eher flach, ohne wirkliches Highlight, so ändert sich das nach mehrmaligem differenzierenden Hin-Hören. Speziell `Used to be a Cop' mit den umeinader kreisenden Leadgitarren ist echt ein Hinhörer - aber eben auch einer im verhaltenen Tempo. Hinzu kommt ein Einfluss, dessen musikalische Auwirkungen ich nicht so richtig orten kann: das Album ist u.a., aber am unfangreichsten und explizitesten Eddie Hinton gewidmet (die beiden anderen Widmungen gehören Jerry Wexler und Vic Chesnutt). Von ihm spielen sie auch zwei Titel, die aber insgesamt nicht rausfallen. Das spricht entweder für die Wandlungsfähigkeit der Hinton Kompositionen oder der Anverwandlungskraft der Truckers. Was damit aber klar wird: nie war der Bezug zum weißen R'n'B der Memphis Prägung stärker als hier: Dan Penn und Eddie Hinton aller Orten und in jeder gespielten Note, und das obwohl Spooner Oldham an den Keyboards seit zwei CDs auch nicht mehr dabei ist! Hab ich die DBT bislang geschätzt wegen ihrer grandios groben "Handwerklichkeit", ihrer Gradlinigkeit und "Ehrlichkeit", verkörpert durch Patterson Hood, wegen ihres Bezugs zur Mannschaft um Dan Penn (Hood, Beckett, Oldham, Jackson etc.), dem damit verbundenen direkten Memphis Einfluss, sie bewundert für ihre Arroganz des Südens, verkörpert in der Person Jason Isbell - alles bislang nicht ausreichend - fang ich doch nun tatsächlich an sie zu lieben! Wenn auch mit einem Stern Reduktion, weil sie sich beim Songschreiben (s.o.) doch langsam was Kreatives einfallen lassen sollten.... PS. Und hab ich schon von der formidablen, für DBT charakteristischen Cover-Art erzählt....?!

Mellow and Soulful
Patterson Hood advertised DBT's previous release, The Big To-Do, as their hardest rocking. In contrast, Go-Go Boots heads in the opposite direction, being much quieter and combining a return to the more country-flavoured tunes of Brighter Than Creation's Dark with a taste of the soul music they were making with Bettye LaVette. As ever it's Cooley who has the best lines, as in Cartoon Gold: "I'm not good with numbers/ I just count on knowing when I'm high enough." Cooley's tunes overall give the impression he's tugging in the country direction, and the themes also tend that way: Pulaski, about a Tennessee country girl drawn to the bright lights of California and finding reality doesn't measure up to what she's seen on TV, and The Weakest Man, about not wanting to be victim to a femme fatale. But if Cooley gets the songs, Hood gets the best tunes, especially Used To Be A Cop, with its amazing musical links between verses and its vague echo of Neil Young's Crime In The City, and the highly affective The Thanksgiving Filter, where the music perfectly complements the account of a dysfunctional family, and is the only place where Brad Morgan gets to release those stinging cymbals of his. In the title track and The Fireplace Poker Patterson returns to the Dirty Vicars theme of The Wig He Made Her Wear, except this time the holy men get their retaliation in first, hiring thugs to do their wives in and, in one case, brutally finishing the job the hired help couldn't complete themselves. On that occasion the comeuppance is swift, with the cops accepting natural justice. And the song which the car's music player at one point demurely called "Track 7" seems to be Hood venting about record company execs, band managers or similar. He could sell it to The Clash. Not to be completely outdone lyrically, Shonna Tucker manages the only rock'n'roll reference I know of to diabetes on Dancin' Ricky, and also makes a good job of one of the two Eddie Hinton covers on the record, Where's Eddie?, re-establishing her soul credentials first applied for on The Big To-Do. Fortunately, on the record she's properly mic'd up so you can hear what she's singing, unlike when she sang this at the Shepherd's Bush Empire last October! Hood too covers a Hinton song, Everybody Needs Love, with feeling, but probably the most soulful song, Mercy Buckets, is reserved for the end. If they'd asked me, this would have been the Valentine's Day download, not the Hinton song. The overwhelming feeling from the album is of a band going from strength to strength, broadening and deepening its repertoire and capabilities with class and panache. As ever, the atmosphere is enhanced by the country-infused slide and dobro of John Neff, and Jay Gonzalez really has tapped the Muscle Shoals spirit. And whilst missing his stinging cymbals, Morgan lays down a solid beat, giving the vital finishing touches to some songs, not least Pulaski. Finally, the sleeve. Wes Freed. Priceless.

Their best since "The Dirty South"
As other reviewers have said this was recorded alongside last year's "The Big To Do" and as they have also said this is the better of the two. I have read it described as the DBT's "Exile on Main Street" and there is a country soul feel about the album. Go-Go Boots is less raucous and has more of a groove than most other DBT records and there are far more acoustic instruments here than is normal for a Truckers album. As always the songs, at least the originals, are stories from small town America about the post traumatic stress and nightmares of a Vietnam veteran (Ray's Automatic Weapon), a hypocritical, adulterous, murdering preacher (Fireplace Poker and Go-go Boots), a burnt out police officer (I Used To Be A Cop) or a country girl moving to sunny California (Pulaski). There are two covers of Eddie Hinton songs in Everybody Needs Love and Where's Eddie, the latter sung by bassist Shonna Tucker is a highlight. This is their best album since the great trilogy of Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day and The Dirty South. It doesn't quite reach the stellar standards of those albums and is a lot less varied in feel. I would certainly have no hesitation in recommending people to purchase this and also to go and see the Drive-By Truckers live, they are a superb live band and they are playing in the UK this Spring. Go Truckers!

DBTs are the best band around currently
Bought this album (and all the others) for myself some years ago having discovered DBTs on Dimeadozen live music bittorrent site. For me, DBTs are the best band around currently. The band is overflowing with talent, three of the band members on this album are songwriters and lead singers in their own right and take turns as lead singer of their own compositions while the rest of the band support. This is like having four different bands under the same name and yet they keep a consistency. Some songs are dark, some deep, some entertaining, some sad, Many are inciteful. If you like your rock creative, intelligent, relentless and with a Southern accent then you'll love this. This CD was bought as a present for my son who loves it too. Like he says, if you don't like DBTs, you don't like music.
I love this band and so I may be a bit biased but this is a cracker. Plenty of new sounds and variety. A treat.

Wie kann man eine Band nur 'Drive by Truckers' nennen? Wie kann man nur so hässliche CD-Covers sich aussuchen? Will die Band keine CDs verkaufen? Diese Fragen stellte ich mir, als ich das erste Mal eine DBT-CD in der hand hielt. Es dauerte auch eine ganze Zeit, bis die CD in meiner Anlage lag - meine Frau dachte, das wäre meine nee Lieblings-CD. Nun ja, dann fing die Musik an, und ich war maßlos überrascht... Die Jungs - und das Mädel - machen richtig gute Musik. Spätestens bei 'Daylight' war ich absolut begeistert. Aber auch 'Aftermath USA' und 'Goodbaye' sind Anspieltipps. Ich kann daher nur sagen, lasst Euch nicht abschrecken, es handelt sich hier um richtig guten amerikanischen Südstaaten-Folk-Rock.

It's a southernrock bless
"A Blessing and a curse" has been mine introduction into the wonderful southerrock music of Drive-by Truckers. Before 2009 I did not know the band, but read sometimes an article about the band. Basic message was the band was the best kept secret in the (southern)rock scene. I was and still am very pleased with the introduction, because I like the record a lot. I think it is a straightforward southernrock album with a mix of rock, smooth, fast, accoustic, slow, short and longer songs. It's the last record with the guitarline-up of Hood-Cooley-Isbell. What I like is the obvious differences between the three, but packed together in one record it still makes sense. In the first three songs you are already introduced to the three: Hood his 'Feb 14' is the short drum driven, lyrical definitely not romantic rocksong about Valentines day. Cooley distinctive voice on the fun, lighter 'Gavity's gone' and the faster Isbell on 'Easy on Yourself' with its full guitarsound. Special care for the beautiful 'Little Bonnie', Hood's ode to his (and to all) died-before-you-were-born-yourself sister. Not a slow song, but semi-accoustic and wonderful storytelling within the song. You can't resist the lines "But they say Bonnie's crystal eyes put the stars to shame / Maybe heaven needed Bonnie's face".

Sometimes it's worth the risk
Buying recorded music on spec - even, and sometimes especially, on recommendation - is an activity which guarantees frequent disappointment among the occasional blazing revelation. This record is one of those elusive revelations. It's so good, in fact, that for some time I held off purchasing anything else by DBT. As they say in the final track, "The secret of a happy ending is knowing when to roll the credits; better roll `em now before anything else goes wrong." Having moved on to buy The Dirty South, I'm now happy that A Blessing and a Curse is not just a one-off. The style dwells somewhere in the slash in country/rock and there are several influences apparent - Crazy Horse, some Allman Brothers-like guitar, a little bit of Wilco (not too much, don't want to spoil it), maybe even a little Blue Oyster Cult or Eagles - but the overall effect is their own. All of the tracks are good, but a few stand out. Track three, Easy on Yourself, tells you most definitely not to be easy on yourself, as this may be your only shot. So good it should be a bumper sticker. Some inspirational speaker should pick this up quick. Track four, Aftermath USA, is about what happens to your favourite dysfunctional family the morning after, with credit cards maxed out, crystal meth in the bathtub, the car parked sideways in the carport and a number of other catastrophes familiar to most of us in suburbia. Daylight, track six, but is the real singalong track of the album, really heartstring tugging lyrics and vocals. Wednesday, track seven, kicks up the pace of proceedings, and provides some nicely quotable soundbites - "he said every man's house should be his palace, but his house still stank of catshit" - and there are some more freaky characters who can turn their arms backwards and threaten to hold their breath till next Wednesday. The next track, Little Bonnie, is a kind of ghost story about the death of a sister before the narrator was born, and whose memory haunts him even though he never kn
