THEY starred in one of the most controversial ads of 2016, and now the ‘Rubber Girls’ are back.
THEY starred in one of the most controversial television ads of 2016, dressed in black latex suits and posing provocatively to sell tyres for Ultra Tune.
Now the ‘Rubber Girls’ are back, wearing tight white tops and shorts that would make Daisy Duke blush, to make you go and get your car serviced.
The 30-second clip shows glamour models Laura Lydall and Parnia Porsche driving down a country road in a convertible Mini Cooper.
When the muffler falls off and lights the car on fire, the two girls scream, before taking a moment to book roadside assistance on their smartphone.
They grab fire extinguishers and douse the blaze, liberally spraying each other with gratuitous shots of jiggling backsides and breasts in between.
Apparently they’re not quick enough though, and the car explodes into an enormous fireball as a voiceover delivers the tagline: “Avoid unexpected situations”.
Fortunately, it’s not long before a man arrives to save them, asking: “Car trouble?”
The video is one of five in a series that will air during the Australian Open.
The advertisements are the brainchild of Ultra Tune chairman Sean Buckley, who told news.com.au they’re designed to make car repairs interesting.
“I’m very sick and tired of all the boring ads that go on television. They’ve got no spunk, no life ... We decided a couple of years ago to go down a path of making our ads interesting, and topical, and funny,” he said.
However, while Mr Buckley said he expected the wet T-shirts to be a bit controversial, he said the worst bit was facing his fiancee afterwards.
He’s engaged to Laura Lydall, the blonde woman featured in the clip, and she wasn’t too impressed about the scene where oil gets dumped on her head.
“She was very upset with me when I tipped oil over her, she didn’t talk to me for a week. But it wasn’t oil, it was actually custard with chocolate mixed in with it,” he laughed.
He told news.com.au the women are both “publicity junkies” and that they love the attention generated by the advertisements.
Since they were broadcast, he said Ms Lydall had shot up the Maxim Hot 100 List, and that her Instagram followers skyrocketed to more than 357,000.
The series is sure to get a mixed reaction from viewers.
Last year’s sexed-up ad, which had the tagline: “We’re into rubber”, resulted in more than 400 complaints to the Advertising Standards Board.
A typical complaint was along the lines of: “The automotive industry is known for a traditional lack of respect for women. The role of the women in the advertisement was purely as objects. The tagline, ‘We’re into rubber’, is offensive and it reduces the women in the ad to fetish objects, not customers or equals.”
The complaints were dismissed , however, the girls hit back with an open letter addressed to a number of prominent media personalities.
“You are of course entitled to voice your displeasure,” they began.
“We feel upset that you are publicly bullying and vilifying us on the basis of our appearance. It’s just plain wrong and unfair ... Surely as independent strong women, we are allowed to choose without fear of prejudice or hurtful judgments about what we wear, how we look and the form of work we choose?”
The stated the clips were “meant to be funny” and that the complaints were an example of “political correctness gone wild”.
