One reason that Lederhosen began to decline in popularity is that German boys began to increasingly wear long pants and short pants began to go out of fashion. This was combined with aew fashion phenomenon--American jeans.
Short pants increasingly replaced kneepants in the 1910s. Shorts had become the dominate fashion for German boys in the 1920s as in the rest of Europe. Quite old boys wore short pants although some also wore knickers. Some younger boys would wear long stockings with shorts during the winter rather than kneesocks.

Cold War German Boys' Clothes: East Germany Figure 1.--This East German film showed common German boys clothes during the early 1980s. Boys were wearing short pants suits less, but casual shorts were still common. We are just beginning to assess East German fashion trends.
