Do men have more sexual partners than women? How many Germans cheat on their partners? What percentage of men have visited a prostitute? A new study answers everything you wanted to know but were too afraid to ask.
According to a study published in the German medical magazine Deutsches Ärzteblatt , German men have as twice as many partners as German women. However, researchers believe the statistical difference is more likely due to German men's propensity to exaggerate and boast about their sex lives rather than their seduction skills.
Researchers based their results on a sample of more than 2,524 people aged 14 and over. They found German men said they had sex with an average of 10 people. German women, meanwhile, said they had sex with five people.
"They act out their gender roles ," said Arne Dekker from the University Hospital in Hamburg's Institute for Sexual Research and Forensic Psychiatry. Dekker, who was not involved in the study, added that some men think it's attractive and the social norm to have many partners, while women find the opposite.
Another factor that could explain the difference: 8 percent of men surveyed revealed that they had at some point visited prostitutes . The average man in this group had sex with four different prostitutes.
When it comes to infidelity, the number of men having affairs also outweighs the number women. Twenty-one percent of male respondents told researchers that they had cheated on their partners, compared to the 15 percent of women who admitted to being unfaithful.
Low proportion of homosexuals in Germany
When it came to sexual orientation, the vast majority of men (86 percent) and women (82 percent) identified as heterosexual, while 5 percent of men and 8 percent of women said they had homosexual relations at some point. By contrast, just 1 percent of men and women said they had never slept with a person of the opposite sex.
Notably, some respondents told the researchers they didn't identify with any of the given categories for sexual orientation.
The study revealed few surprises when it came to sexual activity by age group. The most sexually active were 25 to 29-year-olds. Men in this age bracket claimed to have heterosexual intercourse 60 times per year on average, while for women the number 47 times.
That number sinks as the age group rises. Men aged 50 to 59 said they have sex 34 times per year, women 22 times.
Roughly half of respondents (57 percent) said they were in a relationship with a single partner at the time of the survey. Of those, 76 percent said they did not use condoms.
When it comes to taking the pill or other oral contraceptives , 51 percent of women aged 50 or younger said they did so.
Five percent of those surveyed said they avoided contraception altogether as they said they were trying for a child.
Researchers also singled out the 2.5 percent of people whose sexual behavior should cause worry. Members of the so-called "high risk group" included people who admitted to having unprotected sex both with their partner and outside of their relationship.
The average number of sexual partners among this group was also more than three times higher than the overall average, with men claiming to have had 38 partners and women 17.
Researchers strongly advised those within the "high risk" to receive routine checks to avoid getting infected and ultimately spreading sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, gonorrhea and syphilis.

Same-sex pairing is not just normal in the animal kingdom - it's even common. Studies suggest that about 1,500 animal species are known to practice same-sex coupling - from insects, to fish, birds and mammals. (02.08.2017)

The country has urged the international community not to abandon it as authorities grapple with a relief and rescue operation of a nearly unprecedented scale.
Mikhail Gorbachev, one of the most influential political figures of the 20th century, was laid to rest in a relatively low-key ceremony and without the presence of the current Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Four trucks carrying food relief and three minibuses were set ablaze. Authorities said al-Shabab has been intensifying attacks in the central Hiran region.

A German doctor has been jailed for more than 17 years in the United States for trying to buy eight hours of sex with a young girl in Ohio - in a police sting operation.

US federal prosecutors said Peter Beichl, 50, a doctor from Albstadt in Baden-Württemberg state, flew from Germany to Cleveland in March believing he would have sex with an 11-year-old girl for $1,150 (€859).

He was arrested at the Cleveland airport with lingerie, sex toys and 17 condoms as well as a sedative meant to facilitate the abuse.

In a previous email to an undercover federal agent he had allegedly written: “If she should be scared, I could bring some short acting slight sedative, which is doing no harm.”

Beichl also brought stuffed unicorn toys for his trip because he believed the girl loved the fantasy animals, according to a statement from the US Department of Justice.

Beichl’s conviction is one of four from an undercover investigation authorities began in 2009. Federal agents set up an undercover website that the Cleveland Plain Dealer has reported was called “Precious Treasure Holiday Company,” which offered to arrange sex with children.

Paedophiles who made email inquiries were then invited by federal agents to make sex bookings and travel to the United States.

Another German caught in the sting, 63-year-old Otto Linzenbach of Leipzig, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of attempted exploitation of children and travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and is awaiting sentencing.
President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Thursday warned of new extremist threats to German society as he marked 30 years since the country's worst post-war racist violence.
Steinmeier travelled to the northern city of Rostock to commemorate the 1992 rampage when thousands of bystanders applauded as a marauding mob flung stones and petrol bombs at a housing block for asylum seekers.
He said Germany had failed to snuff out hatred and radicalism in the intervening years, as political leaders warn of potential militancy this winter linked to high energy prices, inflation and resumed pandemic measures.
“The risk that the trail of violence hasn’t ended is high,” Steinmeier told the ceremony.
“Particularly now at a time that puts us to the test like nothing in the last decades — a time that demands a lot of us, in which what’s normal is thrown into doubt and restrictions loom.”
He said Germany had seen successive “waves” of right-wing extremism, some of it deadly, in the last three decades, noting that opposition to the 2015 refugee influx and coronavirus measures had been harnessed by radical groups.
As the country faces a winter of soaring energy bills due to the Ukraine war along with an anticipated sixth wave of the pandemic, far-right as well as extreme-left activists have announced anti-government protests.
In Rostock in 1992, the targetted building was occupied by Vietnamese migrant workers who had to be evacuated from the burning edifice amid shocking scenes in a country still in the throes of reunifying.
Days of violence in the Lichtenhagen district saw several thousand people chanting “Germany for Germans, Foreigners Out!” in ugly images not seen in Germany since the Nazi era.
Steinmeier called the riot a national “disgrace”, saying it was a “miracle” no one was killed in the five-day siege.
Surrounded by survivors of the riot and community leaders, Steinmeier said the scenes were “seared” on the national memory.
“But we can only guess your mortal fear, your sense of abandonment in those hours,” he said.
Steinmeier acknowledged multiple failings including ill-equipped police and a complacent political class that refused to see mounting radicalism in the depressed ex-communist east.
“The violence from back then, that trail of far-right terror, is unfortunately still with us,” he said.
The commemorations were marred earlier when a 13-year-old boy allegedly flashed the outlawed straight-armed Hitler salute behind a reporter while he was on camera. Police said they had identified the juvenile suspect.
There were some 33,900 people in the right-wing extremist spectrum in Germany in 2021, according to a report presented by the BfV federal domestic intelligence agency in June — up from 33,300 in 2020.
Interior Minister Nancy Fäser has said her top security priority is tackling the country’s “biggest threat: right-wing extremism”.
