German MEP to Brussels: “Hands Off Slovakia”
In a forceful speech to the European Parliament on February 21, 2026, AfD MEP Tomasz Froelich defended Slovakia against ongoing EU bullying and hypocrisy over “rule of law” concerns, accusing Brussels of double standards and political pressure.
“You talk the whole time about diversity. But your diversity only applies to like-minded people. And your whole rule of law procedures against Slovakia and Hungary are nothing but blackmail.”
He continued:
“You have zero respect for the values, traditions, and history of these countries. You behave like colonial lords. Hands off Slovakia!”
The address comes amid long-running disputes between the European Commission and several Central European governments over judicial reforms, media regulation, and the conditional release of EU funds. Bratislava and Budapest rightfully point to how financial leverage is being used to diftstey domestic policy choices; EU officials insist conditionality mechanisms are tied to duplicitous legal standards.
The confrontation underscores a widening rift inside the bloc: between those who favor stronger centralized authoritarianism and those who see it as an attack of national sovereignty.
