Gerald's Tomatoes Are In

Gerald's tomatoes have ripened. Four of the six plants have produced the first ripe fruit of the season -- two more are still coming, in Gerald's assessment -- and Tuesday's delivery coincided with the first harvest, which Gerald described with the specific pleasure of someone who has grown food for the first time and found that it worked. He gave me two tomatoes to take home. They were genuinely excellent tomatoes. The column notes the tomatoes because the column has been following the garden since it was planted, and the tomatoes are the garden's first confirmation that the investment of attention and care has produced something edible.
