Gerald finished "To the Lighthouse" on Tuesday. He had read "Mrs Dalloway" at my suggestion two months ago, found it "strange and very good" -- the same assessment he gave "The Tin Drum" -- and when I mentioned that "To the Lighthouse" was structurally different and in some ways more demanding, he said that sounded interesting. He is eighty-one years old and has, as far as I can tell, the intellectual curiosity and reading patience of someone considerably younger. "To the Lighthouse" apparently produced twenty minutes of post-delivery discussion about the relationship between the lighthouse as a destination and the fact that reaching it changes nothing -- a discussion I found more philosophically focused than most conversations I have in contexts specifically designed for philosophical discussion.
