Maria GentleWhispering (real name – Maria Viktorovna) is a Russian-born American YouTuber who is arguably the queen of the Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response genre.
She was born on July 22, 1986, in Lipetsk, Lipetsk Oblast, Soviet Union.
In May 2005, Viktorovna emigrated from Russia to the US for a student exchange program.
For a time, Maria worked as a housekeeper at a Sheraton Hotel. Viktorovna later worked in administration at a medical company.
On February 24, 2011, Viktorovna started her YouTube channel ”Gentle Whispering ASMR.” During her videos, Maria assumes simulated roles – masseuse, flight attendant, hairstylist, sleep doctor, librarian – and performs simple motions: flipping through the pages of a magazine, blowing smoke from an incense burner, and folding towels.
She made her first ASMR video in June 2011, titled – ”Whispering in English and Russian and flipping through a magazine.”
”This is my very first whisper video,” Maria wrote in the video. ”I hope you like it. Just wanted to see if I would get any response.”
Note – ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, a term coined by Jennifer Allen.
According to a study , ASMR was associated with increased skin conductance levels and reduced heart rate.
”It’s like showers of sparkles,” Viktorovna said about ASMR in an interview. ”It’s like warm sand being poured all over you, trickling over your head and down into your shoulders. It’s like goosebumps on your brain.”
Maria was one of the first ASMRtists on YouTube to do role-plays showing her face.

”There’s really no competition in the ASMR world because we want you to experience other people, because you will get different sensations from everyone,” Maria told Cosmopolitan in June 2015. She added: ”There is such a thing as an immunity in ASMR, when you watch too much of one person.”
She has a second YouTube channel, called – ”Sassy Masha Vlogs.” On this channel, Viktorovna uploads more personal content including – behind the scenes footage called Creative Touch, ASMR tutorials, and what happens in her life.
In September 2017, Maria GentleWhispering married Darryl.
Maria met Darryl through the ASMR community.
On February 22, 2019, the couple welcomed a daughter named Mila.
”My husband is the best dad … he always delivers, he’s the most caring and patient parent I know,” Maria said about her husband in June 2020. ”He is fully embracing fatherhood and giving it ALL every day!”
”I can’t believe it’s been 2 years, it’s amazing watching your child grow into a new little human every day more and more,” Viktorovna wrote on her Instagram in February 2021. ”I love her giggles, her stubbornness, her little voice, it’s all so cute.”
”Now that I’m a mom too, I know how much her [her mother] heart aches to be so far away from me, yet she shows only support for all of my decisions.”
”Don’t you wish you could go back to your old self and just give her/him a big hug?”
”Every time I start recording a video I get anxious to remember what to say, to stick to the plan, not to mess things up.”
Viktorovna earned most of her wealth from ads on her YouTube channels.
”I don’t want to say how much I make per month, but it is now enough for me to not have a second job,” Maria said in 2015.
She said on another occasion: ”I don’t live in a luxurious place. It’s just something that helps me stay afloat.”
At the time of writing, her channels have over 980 million views, meaning about $3 million in revenue before taxes.
