Geno Auriemma Announces Retirement After Legendary 40-Year Career at UConn

Storrs, CT – April 5, 2025 – In a move that marks the end of an era in college basketball, Geno Auriemma, the iconic head coach of the UConn women’s basketball team, announced his retirement today after 40 historic seasons with the Huskies.

Auriemma, 70, leaves behind an unparalleled legacy, having led UConn to a record 11 NCAA Championships, including an unprecedented six perfect seasons. Under his leadership, the Huskies became the gold standard of women’s college basketball, producing countless WNBA stars such as Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart, and Paige Bueckers.

'It’s been the honor of a lifetime to coach at this university and to be part of something so special,' Auriemma said at a press conference at Gampel Pavilion. 'But now it’s time for someone else to take the reins. I’m looking forward to stepping back and watching the next chapter of UConn basketball unfold.'

Auriemma’s retirement comes after another dominant season, in which UConn reached the Final Four before falling to South Carolina in a thrilling overtime battle. His career record stands at an astonishing 1,274–156, making him the winningest coach in women’s basketball history.

UConn Athletic Director David Benedict confirmed that a national search for Auriemma’s successor will begin immediately, with speculation already swirling around former Huskies stars and top assistant coaches as potential candidates.
