Some recent comments from Genji’s voice actor are worrying Overwatch 2 fans, as there are a few reasons to see the news as concerning.
While players are excited to learned more about Overwatch 2 at BlizzConline, some recent comments from Genji’s voice actor have sparked discussions about the state of the game. In a recent interview, Space commented that he has heard nothing about the sequel. While this initially sparks some confusion in the interviewer talking with Space, Genji’s voice actor doubles down, saying that he has recorded nothing for Blizzard’s follow-up to the beloved hero shooter.
Overwatch 2 fans quickly ran with this news, as quite a bit of insight can be gained by reading into Space’s comments. While there are a few big possibilities for this lack of recording, all the potential outcomes are negative. As such, it would be reasonable to expect some bad news about the Genji character, or more likely, the state of Overwatch 2 as a whole. While nothing is confirmed and this could all just be part of an actor's attempt at playing coy regarding a big project, Space’s comments certainly seem genuine — and here is what they could mean for the state of Overwatch 2 .
One possibility would be that Genji’s role in Overwatch 2 ’s story is rather small, meaning that Blizzard may not feel the need to contact Space until shortly before release. After all, if Genji is only seen during a few story scenes, rushing to get the actor in the studio would not make sense. That said, Genji fans should not worry about the character’s story role being lessened, as previous footage makes this seems like an unlikely scenario.
Genji’s role in the Overwatch 2 Zero Hour reveal trailer a large one, as he rescues the popular tank hero Winston from certain death in one of the most intents moments of the trailer. Beyond this cinematic appearance, Blizzard has already shown off the hero’s new abilities and confirmed his role as one of the PvE mode’s playable characters. As such, it makes little sense for the character to have a small role in the game when it finally arrives. While it is not out of the realm of possibility that Genji may only have a few voice lines, giving him a deep set of upgradeable skills implies that he will be usable in a big chunk of the story.
The other Genji-related bad news to consider would be that Gaku Space has quietly been replaced with a new voice actor. While Space joked about such a scenario in the same interview where he said he has not yet recorded anything for Overwatch 2 , there is a possibility that this may have happened. After all, games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War recasting Frank Woods without notice is proof that such a thing can happen. However, with how beloved Space and the rest of Overwatch ’s voice cast is, a change in actors also seems like an unlikely scenario.
The real reason to be concerned with this Overwatch 2 news has less to do with Genji and more to do with the game itself. With Blizzard still hiring for the sequel and several rumors suggesting that the game’s development is moving slowly, this Genji news seems to be adding fuel to the fire of an Overwatch 2 delay. If Overwatch 2 really is far from its release, it would make sense that Genji’s dialogue has not yet been recorded — as Blizzard may not have reached that phase of development yet.
For now, all fans can do is wait for an official update as to when the game will release, though fans may want to lower their expectations for getting that news at BlizzConline. With previous Overwatch 2 rumors accompanying this Genji news, it could be awhile before Blizzard is willing to discuss its plans for a release date. While the game will surely come eventually, it may be awhile before it does — and with the alternative being a small role for Genji or the replacement of a fan favorite voice actor, an Overwatch 2 delay may just be the better option.
Overwatch 2 is currently in development for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.

Biography

Genji, Age: 35

Occupation: Adventurer

Base of Operations: Shambali Monastery, Nepal

Affiliation: Shimada Clan (formerly), Overwatch (formerly)
Genji flings precise and deadly Shuriken at his targets, and uses his technologically-advanced katana to deflect projectiles or deliver a Swift Strike that cuts down enemies.
Throw an accurate burst of 3 projectiles.
Throw a fan of 3 projectiles in an arc.
Deflect incoming projectiles towards the direction you are aiming and block melee attacks.
Rapidly dash forward and inflict damage on enemies. Eliminations reset the cooldown.
"Even if I sacrifice my body, I will never sacrifice my honor."
The cyborg Genji Shimada has made peace with the augmented body he once rejected, and in doing so, he has discovered a higher humanity.
As the youngest son of the master of the Shimada ninja clan, Genji lived a life of luxury and privilege. He had little interest in the family's illegal businesses, and although he excelled at and enjoyed his ninja training, he spent most of his time pursuing a playboy lifestyle. Many within the clan considered the carefree Genji to be a dangerous liability, and they resented his father for coddling and protecting him. Following the clan leader's untimely death, Genji's older brother, Hanzo, demanded that Genji take a more active role in their late father's empire. Genji refused, enraging Hanzo. The tension between the brothers built to a violent confrontation that left Genji on the verge of dying.
Hanzo believed that he had killed his brother, but Genji was rescued by Overwatch and the intervention of Dr. Angela Ziegler. The global security force saw Genji as a potential asset in its ongoing operations to combat the Shimada clan. As Genji's injuries left him clinging to life, Overwatch offered to rebuild his body in exchange for his help. He was put through an extensive process of cyberization, which enhanced his natural speed and agility and augmented his superlative ninja skills. Transformed into a living weapon, Genji single-mindedly set about the task of dismantling his family's criminal empire.
But as time passed, Genji felt increasingly at war with himself. He was repulsed by the mechanical parts of his body and could not come to grips with what he had become. When his mission was complete, he abandoned Overwatch and wandered the world in search of meaning. He drifted for many years before crossing paths with the omnic monk Zenyatta. Though Genji initially rejected Zenyatta's wisdom, the benevolent omnic would not be deterred. In time, Zenyatta became his mentor, and under the monk's tutelage, Genji reconciled his dual existence as both man and machine. He learned to accept that although he had a cyborg body, his human soul was intact, and he came to see his new form as a gift and a unique strength.
Now, for the first time in his life, Genji is free. Even he cannot say where his path will ultimately lead.

To know yourself is to be at peace.
Genji is one of Overwatch’s most popular heroes because of his interesting backstory and the simple fact that he is a cyborg ninja. The little brother of Hanzo Shimada has had no shortage of amazing skins like so many other characters in the game, so here is a quick list of his ten best cosmetics in Overwatch 2.
Note: as of this writing, the only Overwatch 2 exclusive Genji skin we know about is his default one pictured below. For now, we will include only his first game skins and will update this article in the future.
To celebrate the first Overwatch League All-Stars, Genji and Tracer got themed skins to commemorate the event. Genji’s is a fiery inferno skin that will put the fear in any Support enemy you dive on.
Genji and Hanzo’s Japanese heritage is fully on display in both characters. With Baihu, Overwatch celebrated the 2018 Lunar New Year by giving Genji a skin fit for a samurai.
We are absolute suckers for lore skins in Overwatch. The Blackwatch skin is a look back at Genji shortly after Hanzo tried to murder him and left him for dead. Mercy worked hard to keep him alive, which is the beginning look of his cyborg life.
Carbon Fiber is the only non-legendary skin on this list, a simple palette swap to a darker tone for Genji’s base skin.
Ice Wraith is a Winter Wonderland skin that transforms the lovable Genji into a wintery warrior with ice spiking out of various areas.
The Illidan skin is a homage to the character of the same name from the Warcraft franchise. Genji takes on the look of the first Demon Hunter, which is definitely not a bad thing for any longtime fans. Unfortunately, this skin was only available during the 2019 Blizzcon.
Nomad is a disguise that Genji undertook while traveling the world, trying to come to peace with his new cyborg life. This is how he looked before meeting Zenyatta and embracing who he had become.
Sentai is an Anniversary event skin that is a nod to the classic television series of the same name. Essentially, he is a Power Ranger.
Sparrow is a look at Genji before he was attacked by Hanzo. This skin has a darker color palette that would convey what he would wear while carrying out orders for his father when he was the leader of the Shimada clan.
Young Genji is a lighter recolor of the Sparrow skin that conveys the character’s party life that would lead to Hanzo attempting to kill him. He has green hair and an overconfident look at life during this time.
