Gees can be translated as spirit or joi de vivre or sheer enjoyment and being part of what is happening. Anyone have an idea of a better english synonym? This week a lot of teams will be playing for the last time in the soccer world Cup South Africa - some are at great risk, Bafana is one and Germany is another. Whatever happens the atmosphere is still electric and vibrant and flags are flying on all vehicles. It is a wonderful time to be here.
A pretty little pony in a field of buttercups as you come into our village of Llandyfriog.
In November 1993 I took a Friday off, with the intention of chasing the Willamette Valley Railway as they ran from Woodburn, Oregon to Salem. When I showed up at Woodburn that morning, owner Mike Root invited me to ride along. I told him I really wanted to get photos, so I would rather chase. He graciously told me if I wanted to ride, he would stop anywhere for pictures. How could you decline an offer like that?
I was nice - I think I only asked for about five or six "photo stops." The rest of the time, I bailed out and got pictures when the train was switching industries enroute. During the trip, we gave a toddler and his mother a ride for a few blocks in Mount Angel. It was a great way to spend about eight hours in an ex-SP GP9.
This image was taken at Geer, a junction east of Salem between Southern Pacific's Geer and West Stayton branches. From this wye, trains could go north to Woodburn, south to Stayton, or west to Salem. Although there were no shippers at Geer, it was a source of revenue for WVR. Crews would change out brake shoes on the freight cars here. As I recall, during the fifteen minute stop, WVR made two or three hundred dollars in labor charges for installing new brake shoes.
A few years after this photo, a freeway widening project for I-5 in Salem doomed the Geer Branch. Today, only the wye remains. The rest of the line from here west to the mainline connection in Salem was dismantled. The old West Stayton branch remains intact, but it has been mothballed south of Silverton for several years. Periodically, there are proposals to restart freight service. The tired track and the minimal prospects for revenue carloadings strongly suggest a resumption of rail service through Geer is unlikely.
