" Gasolina " (English: "Gasoline" ) is a song on Daddy Yankee 's 2004 album Barrio Fino . [1] It features uncredited vocals from Glory , who sings the line "dame más gasolina" (meaning "Give me more gasoline"). The song was released as the album's lead single in October 2004 and became a hit in 2005, peaking inside the top 10 on some of the charts it entered. "Gasolina" is the first reggaeton song to be nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Record of the Year . In 2015, the song reached the number nine position on the "50 Greatest Latin Songs of All Time" list according to Billboard . In 2018, it was ranked number 38 on Rolling Stone 's 50 Greatest Latin Pop Songs. [2] In 2017, it was included on Billboard ' s "12 Best Dancehall & Reggaeton Choruses of the 21st Century" at number eight. [3] In 2021, it was ranked number 50 on Rolling Stone 's " 500 Greatest Songs of All Time ", [4] and a year later it was ranked at the first place on their 2022 "100 Greatest Reggaeton Songs of All Time" list. [5]

"Gasolina" was composed in 2003 by Daddy Yankee and Eddie Dee , assisted by a production duo known as Luny Tunes . [6] Daddy Yankee's album Barrio Fino was released in July 2004, containing the song "Gasolina". At the beginning of August, Daddy Yankee shot a video for the song in the Dominican Republic 's capital city, Santo Domingo , at the Autodrómo Internacional de Las Américas motorsports track and in the historic center of town, the Zona Colonial . [7] The song was released as a single in the US in October 2004, [8] supported by a television appearance by Daddy Yankee on MTV's Total Request Live on November 4, when the video was introduced. By November 6, WSKQ-FM in New York City reported "Gasolina" in their top 10 rotation, and WRTO-FM in Florida said the song was their number one most-played track. [9] It entered the US Billboard Hot 100 chart a week later, rising to number 32 on January 28, 2005. "Gasolina" was a hit in North America and the Caribbean, gaining Daddy Yankee popularity among Latino mainstream music fans. On July 4, 2005, "Gasolina" was released as a single in the UK, eventually earning a Silver certification in March 2019. [10] Australia saw the single enter their charts in late January 2006 during their summer season, rising to number 12. Enjoying worldwide success, "Gasolina" is one of the songs attributed with opening the door for reggaeton and creating a pathway for other stars in reggaeton. [6]

Salvadoran singer Papa A.P. released a cover version of "Gasolina" in Europe in 2005. It caused some controversy for being released there prior to Daddy Yankee's version, [ citation needed ] which had been released the previous year in the United States. It was the first single from his second studio album, Assesina .

Papa A.P. said that he initially refused to release the single before Daddy Yankee but was convinced to do so by his producers. [60] [ unreliable source? ] He said about his version: "I do not regret that choice because even if it's not my title, everyone has very well accepted my version, even in the hood of New York ". He claims his producers "came to an arrangement" with Daddy Yankee's producers. [ citation needed ] One week after the recording, his producer proposed shooting a music video, which was eventually shot in Tunisia . [61]

His first European hit, [62] the song reached the top 10 in France, and also charted elsewhere around Europe.

Tens years after the breakthrough release of "Gasolina," Daddy Yankee reflects on the rapid-fire track that helped turn him into the messiah of reggaeton.
Just over a decade ago, Daddy Yankee sat listening to the sounds of the streets in the tiny apartment he shared with his wife and three children in Villa Kennedy, a housing project in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
“Cómo le gusta la gasolina!” shouted the voices beneath his window, taunting the pretty girls who accepted rides from the guys with the flashiest cars. “She really likes gasoline!”
“A mi me gusta la gasolina,” Yankee began chanting rhythmically, “dame más gasolina.” “I like gasoline, give me more gasoline.” The refrain got stuck in his head. “I had the phrase, I had the chorus,” says Yankee, the Puerto Rican reggaeton star who at the time was little-known outside the island. “I sat in my studio in Villa Kennedy and started to harmonize the flow.”
With help from producer friends Lunny and Eddie Dee, they finished the track, adding rapid-fire verses, a thumping, aggressive beat under the almost childish chorus and the sound of gunning motors in the introduction.
It was an eminently commercial take on what was then an underground, subversive genre shunned by major labels.
“The verse was so simple and easy to remember,” Yankee says. “The word gasolina — everyone in the world knew what it meant. And I think part of the success of the track was people looking for some hidden meaning: Was I talking about alcohol, about drugs?”
Yankee laughs. “That track is completely literal,” he insists. “It’s one of the most innocent songs I’ve ever written.”
“Gasolina” exploded 10 years ago this August, irrevocably altering the business, sound and aesthetic of Latin music. It was the first single off Barrio Fino , the hits-packed Yankee album that blended reggaeton with other tropical beats.
The set debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart July 31, 2004, the first reggaeton album to hit that spot. It eventually became the top-selling Latin album of 2005 and the entire decade.
Because so few Spanish-language stations played urban music at the time, “Gasolina” never rose past No. 17 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart. But it got heavy airplay on mainstream stations — peaking at No. 32 on the Hot 100 — and its dembow beat carried over to Latin America, Europe and the Far East.
As a result, Daddy Yankee was suddenly the messiah of reggaeton. The genre would revive sales of Latin music, usher in a new radio format in the U.S. (Latin Rhythm) and establish the urban base responsible for many Latin radio hits today, including Enrique Iglesias’ “Bailando” and Wisin’s “Adrenalina” (feat. Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin).
The fact that the music has evolved inviting collaboration and meshing with other genres only underscores its uniqueness, not to mention its dance appeal. Once thought to be a pas
