Gas prices across Canada have surged to a record level, with average retail fuel rates climbing past $4.30 per litre, a spike that surpasses prices seen during the early 2000s. The rise is largely driven by a combination of supply constraints at several key refineries, a sharp uptick in global oil demand amid persistent geopolitical tensions, and the recent tightening of Canada’s carbon pricing framework.

In Ontario, the average pump price for a litre of gasoline has reached $4.28, while Quebec reports similar figures, with some stations in Montreal reporting as high as $4.35. Western provinces are not immune; Alberta’s daily average has climbed to $4.21, reflecting both domestic production cuts and the impact of cross-border trade friction with the United States. The new estimates were issued by Natural Resources Canada after a review of current supply chains and market conditions.
