Denis Kaledin:

I have a problem with my Oregon 700 calculating Trip time and Overall Avg speed (or Garmin's logic is different from how I see it). Long story short: I have auto-paused turned ON in activity settings. When I stop my bike, auto-pause kicks in and for some reason not only the Moving time counter stops, but also Trip time, and Stopped time counters on Trip Computer stop as well. The only time counter that continues running during auto-pause is the Elapsed Actual Time.

It's easy to guess that the result of such calculation - my Moving Avg speed is identical to Overall Avg speed, which is wrong.

This seems to be specific to the auto-pause ON mode, when I set it to off, the device follows my (and common sense) logic.

Is there a problem with my unit or is this how it is supposed to be? (awkward calc logic in my opinion)

Robert:

The Oregon units like all GPS Garmin offers will use both Total Time and moving or stopping time of an entire Activity (trip, in your case) because you've not stopped your trip you only have stopped mid way

Robert:

The trip wont "stop" until an entirely different destination has began for that new period of time the unit is first turned on for that days events

Denis Kaledin:

i understand why Elapsed Actual time does not stop, it's clear. I don't understand why the Total Time counter and Stopped time counter STOP when the auto-pause kicks in. Clearly this time when auto-stopped should be added to Stopped time counter

Denis Kaledin:

and again - when I finish my trip/activity, this results in Moving Avg speed being equal to Overall Avg speed

Denis Kaledin:

example activity

Robert:

Total time continues for that operational time during that recording. Total time will combine both moving time and stopped time and use Total time to average all totals of each value

Robert:

The Oregon is an outdoor unit not a fitness unit used to record a specific activity beginning to end or lap to lap The outdoor units will record an activity the moment they are powered on the Total timer starts and all included data will be averaged into total time for that entire event with segments divided by stopped time

Robert:

To stop the total timer you need to Save and then clear that activity before beginning another

Denis Kaledin:

that's what i'm always doing before new activity start

Robert:

That will end that activities total timer

Denis Kaledin:

if you look at the activity example I posted above, my Total Time = Moving time (4:45:37). While the Elapsed time is actually the true time from the beginning to the end of my activity (7:23:07)

Denis Kaledin:

I was actually stopped for over 2 hours, with auto-pause. But my Total time does not reflect this, it is identical to the Moving time. Don;t you find it strange?

Robert:

Was your auto Pause set to a specific distance or time before that was to engage?

Denis Kaledin:

auto-oause was set to 2.41km/h, the default setting

Robert:

If the unit was paused but the unit was receiving errored GPS signal that may have caused the unit to think it was moving again when it wasn't physically moving during that recording. Have you increased the auto pause km/h setting to see if that helps the unit's calculation?

Robert:

Also it is advised to get the best recording results by adjusting the units GPS settings to enable WAAS using this articleImproving the GPS and Distance Accuracy of an Outdoor Handheld

Robert:

Trip Computer and Track Log Show Different Distance

Denis Kaledin:

I will try that. But my point was: once the auto-pause kicks in (it's actually quite accurate), the Moving time counter just stops, which is correct. But the Stopped time counter also remains stopped, which is just wrong, the Stopped time counter is supposed to run during auto-stopped period, that's the whole point of this counter

Robert:

Those ar3e just a few links that Garmin offers to similar inquiries posted on the Garmin SupportCenter

Robert:

The Stopped counter would be expected to stop when the user Pauses the recording and not when the auto Pause enables but the after recording info should show the Auto Paused time within that data of the event.

Robert:

You have been idle for some time now. Is there anything further I can assist you with?

Denis Kaledin:

thnks, Robert. I will check the links you've sent me. Have a good day
