Video footage of a 17-year-old girl being gang raped has shaken South Africa, proving that the country's war against rape is far from being won.
The gang rape of the Soweto teenager, whom doctors said has the mental capacity of a four-year-old, provoked anger in South Africa.
Her attackers, aged between 14 and 20, filmed the vicious assault on a mobile phone.
The footage was sent to other mobile phones and spread rapidly before being posted online, where it went viral.
The girl, who went missing, was found alive and her attackers have been arrested. Prosecutors have warned they could see life in prison.
Human rights organisations have waned that many rape cases in South Africa continue to go unreported and attackers are often able to walk free.
It is estimated that women born in South Africa have more chances of being raped than learning how to write, according to the website Rape.co.za .
A study by Interpol shows that South Africa has the highest rate of rape in the world, with a woman being raped every 17 seconds. This does not include the number of child rape victims.
Speaking at the release of the country's annual crime statistics report in Pretoria in September 2011, police minister Nathi Mthethwa said the number of reported rapes in 2010/11 was unacceptably high.
Even though overall sexual offences had decreased by 3.1 percent after 66,196offences were reported , the number of rapes increased. the minister said.
"Rape increased from 55,097 [2009/10] to 56,272cases and we cannot seriously say we are winning the war against rape," Mthethwa conceded.
Rights organisations have warned the vast majority of cases go unreported.
According to the South African Medical Research Council , only one in nine South African rapes are reported.
The website Rape.co.za cites a survey that was recently conducted amont 1,500 Sowetan schoolchildren, in which it was discovered that a quarter of all boys said that "jackrolling" (the slang term they use for gang rape) was "fun".
The word "jackroll" was coined to refer to the forceful abduction of women in townships by a gang known as the "Jackrollers", which operated from 1987-1988.
The gang leader, Jeff Brown, soon became one of the townships' most feared gangsters.
Even though there were only about 10 men in the group, they became notorious for the crimes they committed, including abduction, rape and robbery.
As the abduction of women became more frequent, anyone who did it could be called a jackroller and the term became commonly used in townships.
The emergence of jackrolling coincided with a dramatic increase in both youth violence in townships and youth unemployment.
Jackrolling is mainly a youth phenomenon, as it is generally committed by young people.
Research has also shown that, in contrast to other forms of rape, jackrolling is almost always conducted in the open, with the rapists often making no attempt to conceal their identity.
Jackrolling also appears to be linked to gangster culture, with the sexual predators seeing it as a way to be feared and gain respect from fellow criminals, researchers have said.
Sexual attacks against children (younger than 18 years old) in South Africa increased by 2.6 per cent in 2010-2011.
Among the predominantly social contact crimes committed against children, 51.9 percent were sexual offences, according to the country's 2010-2011 annual crime statistics.
Most of the victims of crimes committed against children are between 15 and 17 years of age, though 60.5 percent of sexual offences committed against children targeted those below the age of 15.
Rights organisations have warned about contributing factors, such as the culturally propagated myth that sexual intercourse with a virgin can cure HIV or AIDS.
"Corrective Rape" is when a man rapes a lesbian woman or child in order to "cure" his victim and turn her into a heterosexual.
Corrective rape is prevalent in the townships.
Victims are often viciously tortured during the sexual assault and sometimes even murdered.

FIVE boys as young as twelve have been detained in Germany on suspicion of gang-raping a woman in a park, sparking a row about whether the country's age of criminality should be lowered.
The youths stand accused of assaulting a mentally disabled 18-year-old woman, but German prosecutors admit some of them are too young to stand trial.
Three of them are 14, the earliest age at which offenders can be prosecuted in Germany, but two are only 12, meaning they cannot be arrested or charged.
The incident took place on Friday in the western city of Mülheim after the group, all originally from Bulgaria, purportedly lured the victim into a playground in the park.
Reports say they then dragged her into some bushes and filmed a sexual assault on their phones.
A spokesman for local police said: "There was violence, massive violence."
Police did not share details of the attack, but local media said the woman was "abused in various ways".
Residents nearby were alerted to the incident after their dogs would not stop barking.
After an hour, a 61-year-old man reportedly came out of his house after an hour and saw the woman and two suspects, who fled the scene immediately.
The man found the injured and traumatised woman on the ground and alerted police.
She was taken to hospital with unspecified injuries.
The victim was able to give detailed descriptions of the perpetrators, and police later arrested all five.
In Germany, the minimum age at which a child is considered to be criminally responsible for an offence is 14, while in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland the equivalent age is ten.
Rainer Wendt, the head of the police force union, said: "For years we've been demanding that the age of criminal responsibility be lowered in Germany."
But the head of the German Association of judges, Jens Gnisa, said: "The equation 'more punishment, less criminality' does not work with youths.
"The educational rules established in German law are enough to tackle juvenile crime."
Speaking about Friday's incident, police spokesman Peter Elke said: "After we determined that two of the group members are 12 years old and therefore are not criminally responsible, we handed them over to the parents.
"The three 14-year-olds were arrested and detained overnight.
"They were released on Saturday after interrogation."
The two 12-year-olds will reportedly be handled by Germany's Youth Welfare Office.
A police investigator who wanted to remain anonymous told local media that an arrest warrant had no chance of success in this case.
"Due to the current legal situation, it is very difficult to bring suspects who are that young into custody," he said.
"However, the problem now is that they can freely discuss the victim's statement with each other to cast doubt on it."
Reports have said the five teenagers are from the southern Bulgarian town of Pazardzhik and are partly related to each other.
The incident is similar to a case a year ago in Velbert, a town near Mulheim, where a gang of eight Bulgarian teens raped a 13-year-old girl.
The perpetrators in that case were eventually jailed, receiving jail sentences varying from nine months to four years.
Investigations into the most recent incident are ongoing.

A teenage girl was left ‘covered in blood’ and needing surgery after she was allegedly drugged and gang raped by 10 men at her own birthday party.
A teenage girl was left needing surgery after she claimed she was drugged and gang raped by 10 men at her own birthday party, according to reports.
The 15-year-old was celebrating her birthday with friends and family in the city of Rosario in Argentina when she was brutally attacked, Argentine newspaper La Nación reports.
An 18-year-old man, who reportedly knew the victim and lived nearby, has been accused of drugging her during the celebrations on December 12.
He allegedly gave the girl a drink which appeared to be alcohol before taking the victim to his house, according to reports.
An eyewitness said the victim was stumbling as she left her family home with the suspect, local newspaper Infobae reports.
Family and friends at the party started looking for the teenager when they realised she had disappeared and reportedly found her wandering in the street near her home several hours later.
Disorientated and covered in blood, the girl claimed she had been raped by 10 men at the suspect’s house before collapsing, according to La Nación .
The teen was rushed to the Eva Perón Hospital, where doctors reportedly found her injuries to be compatible with a violent sex attack.
Dr Jorge Kilstenin said the girl underwent an operation due to her “considerable genital injuries” and received two blood transfusions, Todo Noticias reports.
“It is evident there was a situation of sexual violence,” Dr Kilstenin said, adding that the victim remains in hospital.
According to the newspaper, the girl’s mother told local broadcaster L28 , “We were celebrating her birthday with family and friends. He put something in her drink and took her out of my house.
“He wasn’t invited, nor was he her boyfriend.”
She claimed her daughter was drugged when she found her covered in blood in the street.
“If I didn’t get her to hospital, she would have died in my arms from all the things they did to her,” she said.
She added, “I’m not going to stop until justice is done.”
According to Pagina 12 , Ramiro Gonzalez Raggio, head of the city’s Sexual Crimes Unit, said he is confident at least five people were involved in the gruesome attack.
“We can confirm with reliable evidence that five people participated,” he told the newspaper.
Two of the perpetrators are reported to be the brothers of the 18-year-old suspect, while a second suspect, a 26-year-old man, has also been arrested for participating in the attack.
The 18-year-old suspect’s mum could also be prosecuted as local sources claim she knew the attack was taking place and did nothing to stop it.
The girl reportedly told psychologists she briefly remembers one suspect on top of her and also claims to have heard the mum of one of the suspects saying: “They are going to report you for what you have done.”
Mr Raggio said the authorities believe they have identified the culprits, but cops have not ruled out the possibility of further suspects.
Cops are also investigating whether the victim was drugged before she was raped, but Raggio said detectives believe the girl collapsed due to the amount of alcohol she drank at the party.
The suspects could face 20 years in prison, according to Infobae .
The main suspect’s house was also set on fire by neighbours during protests after the attack, the newspaper reports, which might have destroyed key evidence in the case.
