A 22-year-old gay man in Brazil’s southern Santa Catarina state was gang-raped and tortured last week in what human rights activists described as a "brutal" and "barbaric" act of violence amid a growing tide of hate crime in the country.
The victim, who was not named, was assaulted in the state's capital city of Florianópolis by three men armed with sharp objects who forced him to carve homophobic slurs into his legs, The Guardian reported, citing the activists. He was then left in the street, where he was later found before being taken to a hospital.
The man is now recovering at home, according to the report. Police chief Verdi Furlanetto told The Guardian they are investigating the attack, but no arrests have been made yet.
"This is a frightening crime but it’s very common in Brazil, and violence - not only against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people but also women, black people and immigrants - is worsening," said Association in Defence of Human Rights president Lirous Ávila.
Ávila, whose organization helps victims of violence in Florianópolis, is supporting the family of the victim. She explained that news of the attack — which broke out during pride month — had triggered a huge but divided reaction across Brazil.
Some people were shocked, while others justified the assault because of the man's sexuality, according to Ávila. "It’s absurd to justify violence that is brutal and barbaric," she said.
Margareth Hernandes, a lawyer based in Florianópolis and president of the gender law commission, said violence against LGBT people in the country has grown recently.
"Brazil is the world champion of LGBT murders. We are a very conservative country where there is still a lot of prejudice. Hate speech ends up propagating violence," she said.
At least 237 LGBT people died in situations of violence in 2020, according to Grupo Gay da Bahia , the oldest LGBT rights organization in Latin America. A report by Human Rights Watch, meanwhile, showed that the national Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office received 1,134 complaints of violence, discrimination and other abuses against LGBT people between January and June 2020.
Both Hernandes and Ávila attributed this trend of rising violence partly to the attitude of Brazil's leadership.
"We have a president who compounded this violence,” said Ávila, referring to President Jair Bolsonaro, a self-described "proud homophobe ."
"It seems that the population feels it has a right to commit these violent acts against the LGBT population, influenced by Bolsonaro," she explained.

A GANG of women kidnapped a man and raped him for three days while force-feeding him energy drinks, police said.
The victim, 23, was found traumatised and exhausted after being dumped in a field semi-naked after his 72 hour ordeal, according to cops in South Africa.
Detectives investigating the case said the 23-year-old man had got into a 15-seater communal taxi with three young women.
Police spokesperson Captain Colette Wellback said: "En-route into town the driver changed direction and the young man was told to get in the front.
"One of the women then allegedly injected him with an unknown substance and he passed out and woke up in an unfamiliar room in a single bed.
"The female suspects then allegedly forced the man to drink energy drinks before taking turns raping him numerous times every day for three days."
The victim, from Nellmapius in Pretoria, South Africa, was dumped in a field in Benoni where he flagged down passing motorists who called police.
He got into the taxi three days previously to get a lift into Pretoria and told officers he had not been allowed to sleep and was only allowed to consume energy drinks.
The police said he lost count of the number of times he was raped.
Captain Wellback said: "The South African Police Service take all sexual offences seriously regardless of the gender of the victim involved.
"We assure all victims of these types of sexual crimes that they we will carry out robust investigations to bring all the offenders to justice."
Any other victims of the female rape gang have been asked to come forward.
Violent crime, including kidnap and rape, is rife in troubled South Africa .
Just yesterday it was reported that a student was allegedly raped, stabbed and strangled to death after she was abducted in a violent carjacking.
Last year three women were arrested for luring a man to a house in Durban, South Africa, and raping him after locking the door and beating him.
The video went viral and it was only when the footage surfaced it was reported.
In October 2015 a 31-year-old male hitchhiker was picked up by three women in a BMW who gave him a soft drink which had been spiked with Viagra.
He was raped by all three women in the car at gunpoint.
The previous May a man was kidnapped in Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth, by three women in a black BMW and raped at gunpoint in an hour-long ordeal.
In March the same year a hitch-hiker was given a lift by three women who produced a gun and then blindfolded him and gang raped him in a garage.
Reese Mann, director of the South African Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse, said nearly 20 per cent of all sexual violations reported to police were on men.
He said: "Male victims of sexual abuse are much less likely than their female counterparts to report sexual abuse because police don’t take it seriously.
"It is a widely accepted myth that if males get an erection during the sexual abuse they must have enjoyed it - but a man being raped can still be erect."
Police are urging any other victims of the female rape gang or any witnesses to come forward.
In February a family told of their terror after finding a naked stranger sleeping in bed next to their toddler.

he was in all kinds of teen bop magazines and he got tons of box. he rolled iwth the latinos mostly though he wasn't really that himself much. quit acting during hs, didnt like it. hated talking about movies. we used to yell lines from movies and he'd go apeshit. like playing pe softball we'd say fartsniffer and shit and hed lose it. actually he was a really cool guy. hes a firefighter in la somewhere now.
