'Game of Thrones' Prequel Series 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' Greenlit for 2025 Release

Los Angeles, March 26, 2025 — HBO has officially announced the greenlighting of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a new Game of Thrones prequel series based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas. Slated for a 2025 release, the show will explore the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and his young squire, Aegon V Targaryen (Egg), set nearly a century before the events of Game of Thrones.

A Return to Westeros

Following the mixed reception of House of the Dragon’s second season, HBO is banking on the beloved Dunk and Egg stories to recapture the magic of the original series. Unlike the grand-scale political wars of Thrones or House of the Dragon, this new series will be a more intimate, character-driven tale, blending action, humor, and heart.

Casting Rumors Heat Up

While no official announcements have been made, insider reports suggest that The Witcher’s Liam Hemsworth is in talks to play the towering knight Ser Duncan, while newcomer Jude Smith (13) is being considered for the role of the future king, Egg.

George R.R. Martin’s Involvement

Martin, who serves as an executive producer, expressed excitement about the adaptation: 'Dunk and Egg’s journeys are dear to my heart. This isn’t about Iron Thrones or dragons—it’s about friendship, honor, and the smallfolk of Westeros.'

Fans are already speculating whether the show will tie into House of the Dragon or future Game of Thrones spin-offs, with some hoping for cameos from familiar Targaryens.
