George R.R. Martin has been called "the American Tolkien" by Time Magazine, and now his landmark fantasy series is being adapted to a graphic format, starting with the first book of the series: A Game of Thrones. The premiere issue introduces readers to George's world, adapting the prologue and first three chapters of the novel, and bringing onto the graphic stage such iconic characters as Eddard and Catelyn Stark, Jon Snow, young Bran Stark, and Daenerys Targaryen. This novel has also been adapted as a major miniseries by HBO - with HBO's highest ratings to date, since having premiered on April 17, 2011.

There's a lot Game of Thrones star Sean Bean didn't like about, well, being a star.
Speaking to the U.K.'s Times Magazine (via Variety) , Bean, who played Ned Stark in the Game of Thrones, said he disliked the intimacy coordinators production would bring in to help film the show's many sex scenes because they would "spoil the spontaneity" of a scene.
“It would inhibit me more because it’s drawing attention to things,” Bean said. “Somebody saying, ‘Do this, put your hands there, while you touch his thing… I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise.”
Speaking about Snowpiercer, another series Bean worked on, the actor said he doesn't like when TV companies or advertisers cut out the most "experimental" part of a sex scene.
"I think they cut a bit out actually. Often the best work you do, where you’re trying to push the boundaries, and the very nature of it is experimental, gets censored when TV companies or the advertisers say it’s so much. It’s a nice scene, quite surreal, dream-like and abstract. And mango-esque.”
When asked if the intimacy coordinators are present to protect the performers, Bean said it depends on the actress.
Some other Game of Thrones stars don't agree with Bean's take on the steamy scenes in the show. Actress Gemma Whelan, who played Yara Greyjoy in Game of Thrones, said the sex scenes were "a frenzied mess" due to the lack of direction, and that other projects benefit from intimacy directors. "With intimacy directors, it’s choreography – you move there, I move there, and permission and consent is given before you start. It is a step in the right direction.”
Bean is also not a fan of fan conventions, citing a bad experience he had at one Lord of the Rings convention. Bean said the fans were "good-natured, positive people who were getting tossed around and overcharged for things.”
The conversation surrounding Game of Thrones' sex scenes is continuing with the franchise's prequel show, House of the Dragon. Just over the weekend, House of the Dragon star Matt Smith said he thinks there are too many sex scenes in the series .

In the opinion of series star Matt Smith, the amount of sex scenes set to be featured in HBO’s upcoming House of the Dragon borders on excessively gratuitous – even for Game of Thrones .

The Doctor-turned-Marvel vampire-turned-Targaryen shared his thoughts on the spin-off’s amount of on-screen relations during a recent profile interview given to Rolling Stone .
Asked by outlet contributor Paul Kirkley if audiences could expect to see more or less the same level of sexually explicit content from House of the Dragons as its predecessor, Smith confirmed that not only was the series just as risque, but that its production team had taken it to an almost distracting level.

“You do find yourself asking, ‘Do we need another sex scene?’” the actor recalled. “And they’re like, ‘Yeah, we do.’”
However, despite the production team’s confidence in the inclusion of evermore sex scenes in the series, Smith told Kirkley that he found himself personally questioning their directorial choices.

“I guess you have to ask yourself: ‘What are you doing?” he said. “Are you representing the books, or are you diluting the books to represent the time [we’re living in]?’ And I actually think it’s your job to represent the books truthfully and honestly, as they were written.”
Further pressed by Kirkley as to whether or not his character, Prince Daemon Targaryen, would appear in any such scenes, Smith laughed as he revealed, “Yeah — slightly too much, if you ask me.”

Notably, Smith’s insight that House of the Dragon features a seemingly excessive amount of intimate scenes stands in direct contrast to co-showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal’s recent claim that the series “pulls back” on them in favor of discussing the topic of violence against women, both sexual and otherwise.
“[We approached the topic] carefully, thoughtfully and don’t shy away from it,” Sapochnik explained to The Hollywood Reporter last month. “If anything, we’re going to shine a light on that aspect. You can’t ignore the violence that was perpetrated on women by men in that time. It shouldn’t be downplayed and it shouldn’t be glorified.”

The truth regarding the matter will become clear when House of the Dragon premieres on HBO on August 21st, 2022.
