Game-Changing Rice Project for Cameroonian Farmers

The Cameroonian government has launched a major program aimed at developing 10,000 hectares of rainfed rice cultivation in the northern regions.

This program is expected to produce nearly 47,000 tonnes of paddy rice — equivalent to 18% of the country's current production of high-quality milled rice.

What benefits for local populations?

Interviewed by Sputnik Africa, economist Jean-Marie Biada highlighted two major impacts for farmers in the North:

"People will no longer have to go into debt with cooperatives or tontines to finance their pre-campaign," he explained.

An opportunity for credit management training: many farmers resort to "all sorts of schemes to avoid repayment," whereas this energy could be directed "toward production," the economist pointed out.

Greater investment capacity: farmers will be able to reinvest their earnings into the activity.

If the experience proves successful, the state could provide additional funding to help farmers achieve "self-sufficiency," he concluded.
