In his book Like Birds, photographer Sven Jacobsen captures the freedom and energy of youth, as they jump into water, hang off trees, act silly, kiss or simply lie back in the tall grass

Teens Relaxing in a Field, northern Germany, 2020
‘I love taking pictures of teenagers doing their thing. Why not show them just chilling in a field sometimes? Slow time. Is there something you really want to do quickly and efficiently? The slow is always more beautiful, richer and fuller.’ Like Birds by Sven Jacobsen is published by Hatje Cantz. All photographs: Sven Jacobsen
About the Need for Wasting Time, northern Germany, 2020
‘Joshua is a musician from Cologne. I liked his energy, running around and climbing on trees. He was like a leopard after a long time in a cage … now free again.’
Reflections on a Lake in the Forest, northern Germany, 2015
‘I see beauty and magic everywhere … even in a little puddle in the woods. The contrasts of focused elements and the blurred background, between colours and darkness, the whole composition. If you watch something long enough, you can see the whole beauty of the world in it’
Lui, Langsee, Germany, 2015
‘I took this picture of my son Lui before we swam in this lake at my mother’s house. I love it because there’s something calm and soft about his face and in the whole surrounding’
Untitled, Valparaiso, Chile, 2014
‘This was a snapshot of two friends on a beach in Chile. I love the colours, the sand everywhere and the infinite power of joy and love’
Funny Snorkelling Family, Croatia, 2018
In her essay Arrows of Life, Nadine Barth writes: ‘Sven Jacobsen’s pictures of youngsters trying things out – jumping into the water with exuberance, clambering around on fences, poles and dunes, being silly, kissing, skateboarding, or simply lying in the tall grass – remind me of a pre-digital world. Nobody looks at their cellphone, nobody takes a selfie, nobody plays around on a game console’
Beautiful Teens on a Bench, Buenos Aires, 2011
‘Coming of age, as it could have happened 20 or 30 years ago. The images of nature in these shots – the sea, the clouds, the beach – give little information about the decade. There is an amplifier in one that reminds me of mine in the 1980s’
Nothing Needed, Portugal, 2019
‘Jacobsen says that when he takes photos, it is about capturing in a single image this flow of beauty’
Friendship, northern Germany, 2020
‘Jacobsen prefers daylight, or at most a clip-on flash. He prefers to be guided by intuition rather than by ready-made concepts’
Teens Making Out, NYC, 2010
Jacobsen has worked as a commercial photographer for multinational companies yet there is always an edge to his work, as in this shot in which the passion shown by two teens seems to completely exclude the viewer.

Museum experiences for teens, created by teens.
The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery's “call for entries” for its Teen Portrait Competition will occur in Fall 2021. Artists between the ages of 13 and 17 are invited to submit portraits to the juried competition in the medium of photography.
Local teenagers design the competition for their peers under the supervision of the museum’s education department. The competition is designed to introduce teenagers to the concept of representing identity through portraiture.
The finalists are chosen by the National Portrait Gallery’s Teen Museum Council, a group of twenty teenagers from D.C., Maryland, and Virginia who engage with the Portrait Gallery’s collections and create programming for their peers.
Two winners are chosen: one in the 13- to 15-year-old category and one in the 16- to 17-year-old category.
The next Teen Portrait Competition will be held during the 2021-2022 school year. Please check back in August 2021 for competition details.
Questions about the competition can be sent to NPG-TeenPortraitCompetition@si.edu
The National Portrait Gallery invites you to join its Teen Museum Council. Teen Museum Council is an intensive program for D.C. area teens (grades 9-12) who are interested in developing leadership skills, learning about themselves through portraiture and art, and making the Portrait Gallery an engaging place for teenagers. Teen Museum Council, also known as TMC, is a program for teens by teens to foster more interest in museums and create a community for local teens.
TMC members have the opportunity to work on a variety of activities such as creating teen-centered events, participating in workshops and training sessions with museum professionals, and gain experience at the museum while developing creative and critical thinking skills. Teen Museum Council is a year-long commitment that meets once a week on Wednesdays during the school year.
Please check back in September 2021 for more information about the 2021-2022 Teen Museum Council.
