Fritz Klimsch trained at the Königliche Akademische Hochschule für die bildenden Künste [Royal Fine Art Academy] in Berlin in the drawing class taught by the painter Ernst Hancke and in the modelling class under Albert Wolff. From 1887-1890 he was a pupil of Fritz Schaper's. While still a student, the young sculptor produced his first important work, winning awards and his first experience of official recognition.
On his wedding trip to Paris, Klimsch became acquainted with Rodin's work, which greatly impressed him with its liveliness of form and expression and left a lasting influence on him. Klimsch regarded Adolf von Hildebrand as second only to Rodin as the inspiration behind his art. Hildebrandt supplemented Rodin's liveliness with tectonics and statics, thus creating the balance Klimsch felt was so important to his own sculpture.
In 1898 Klimsch founded the Berlin Secession jointly with Max Liebermann and Walter Leistikow and was represented on a regular basis at the exhibitions the group mounted. Travels to Italy and Greece shaped his style. Klimsch was subsequently extraordinarily successful with portraits, monuments and funerary sculpture as well as female nudes. He did a great many portraits of distinguished representatives of cultural and political life, including Ludwig Thoma, Lovis Corinth, Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt and Paul von Hindenburg. In 1912 he became a member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts and in 1916 a senator of the Academy. Appointed to the Akademische Hochschule für bildende Künste in 1921, he retired in 1935 after heading the master class studio there. After the war the artist settled in the Black Forest to live in seclusion, producing from then on only a few works in small formats. In 1950 Fritz Klimsch was awarded the Große Bundesverdienstkreuz and died that same year.

It's funny. I don't think this is a particularly great shot. The sky is nice, yes, and the fact that I'm nude adds an element of intrigue, but all-in-all, it's not very good. Is what's funny is it has the most views of any of my shots on Flickr.

Oggi intervistiamo due persone in un colpo solo, Alessandro Viganò e Matteo Scarpellini aka ALMAPHOTOS. Sono gli occhi fotografici dietro Reality Project, qualcosa di strafico. Sulla loro pagina lo presentano così: “Project about real life beauty. We shoot normal people,
real and nude in all its shapes and sizes. No glamour or retouch”, che dire di più? Godetevi l’intervista e la splendida gallery.
Parlateci un pò di “Reality Project”.
L’idea del progetto è nata per contrastare questo falso ideale di bellezza patinata che ci viene imposto dai media, dove tutti devono essere alti, magri, con la pelle perfetta, gli addominali scolpiti, il seno grosso e sodo e così via…
Con il nostro lavoro vogliamo dimostrare che la vera bellezza la si trova in ogni corpo, indipendentemente dalla forma e dimensioni.
Il progetto è molto intimo, eppure coinvolgente, aperto, pubblico, in continuo divenire. Come mai questa scelta?
Il nostro lavoro vive se viene mostrato a un pubblico. Non avrebbe senso fare tutto questo lavoro e tenerlo nel cassetto.
La gente che partecipa è assolutamente consapevole di questa visibilità.
E lo scopo è proprio quello di raggiungere più persone possibili e dimostrare, come ti ho già detto, che la bellezza si trova in ciascuno di noi.
Che sensazioni provate quando realizzate gli scatti per il progetto? Qualche storia particolare?
Ogni soggetto ha una vita da raccontare.
Purtroppo il poco tempo che condividiamo con queste persone, non sempre ci permette di approfondire queste storie, ma con alcuni siamo diventati molto amici. E allora in seguito sì, si riesce ad andare più a fondo.
Ogni volta è una sfida diversa. Persone sconosciute in luoghi sconosciuti.
Molto difficile e molto stimolante al tempo stesso.
Cosa vi piacerebbe trasmettere a chi guarda le vostre foto?
Ci piace trasmettere dei messaggi positivi.
Cerchiamo di mostrare i soggetti nella loro positività.
E chi partecipa a questo progetto così delicato, di positività ne ha da vendere!
Che sensazioni provate quando scattate foto, in generale? Perchè lo fate, che rapporto avete con la fotografia?
La fotografia per noi è un mezzo di espressione e comunicazione. C’è che scrive, chi parla, chi disegna.
Noi raccontiamo le cose con le foto.
Quali macchine fotografiche usate per i vostri lavori? Ne avete una preferita o a cui siete particolarmente legati?
Negli anni ci siamo accorti di quanto sia ridicola la corsa al megapixel.
I discorsi tecnici li lasciamo ai forum dei fotoamatori.
Certo, avere una bella lente aiuta, ovvio, ma lo sappiamo tutti che avere l’ultimo modello di fotocamera in commercio non serve a fare delle belle foto. Se proprio siete curiosissimi, il 90% delle foto che scattiamo, sono fatte con delle mirrorless.
Per Reality Project usiamo anche una Mamiya degli anni ‘60 con un dorso Polaroid.
State lavorando a qualcos’altro attualmente? Avete progetti futuri a cui vorreste dedicarti?
Parallelamente stiamo lavorando a un progetto che coinvolgerà donne che soffrono di alopecia. Poi uno top secret nel mondo della cucina.
Quest’estate invece saremo in giro per l’Italia con un furgoncino degli anni 70 per fare dei microdocumentari audio-video-fotografici… e perché no, magari riusciremo a scattare anche qualche soggetto per RP.
Quali sono i fotografi che più vi piacciono, che più vi ispirano?
Uno per tutti: Luigi Ghirri.

Stiamo pensando di pubblicare un libro e lanceremo una campagna di crowdfunding per poterlo realizzare, che altrimenti l’investimento sarebbe troppo alto.
Già adesso stiamo raccogliendo donazioni volontarie (nella homepage del sito c’è un tasto DONATE) per poter affrontare le trasferte necessarie per fotografare il maggior numero di candidati possibile.
Abbiamo già più di 130 aspiranti modelli in “lista d’attesa” provenienti da tutta Italia e non solo.
C’è anche qualcuno dall’Inghilterra, dalla Francia, dal Belgio e persino dagli USA.
A breve metteremo in vendita anche delle bellissime magliette serigrafate, che serviranno a finanziare in parte il progetto.

THE REALITY PROJECT… AN INTERVIEW WITH ALMA PHOTOS
Nowadays the aesthetic of beauty is totally standardized, and where doesn’t reach reality, we (over)use photo editing. REALITY PROJECT is born to contrast this distorted view that is imposed on us daily by the media, and to demonstrate instead that the true beauty can be found in every body. ! It is a photographic project that portrays normal people, real and nude, leaving their body to express and convey their natural beauty without photo retouching, in all its shapes and sizes. ! The project, in progress, is an idea of Alessandro Viganò and Matteo Scarpellini, also known as ALMA PHOTOS, two photographers from Milan who always portray ordinary and “real” people. Hence the name of the project.
Alma Photos answered some of our questions in between shows during Paris fashion week.
TheKinsky: How was the idea of REALITY PROJECT born? AlmaPhotos: The idea of the project came to counter this false ideal of beauty imposed on us by the media, where everyone has to be tall, thin, with perfect skin, sculpted abs, big breasts and so on … With our work we want to show that true beauty can be found in every body, regardless of size and shape.
TK:How long did it take to form it? AP: We have been very determined in this project. We shot 8 subjects, set up the site and prepared all the press material in only two months.
TK:Why are we afraid of nudity? AP: It is probably part of our culture. For thousands of years we have been educated to cover our body, to escape the temptations of the flesh.., maybe we are still under this influence. Although I think things are changing very quickly and nudity is becoming gradually more normal, finally.
TK:What do you find interesting in experimenting with alternative photographic subjects. Which process you apply for Reality Project? AP:Each shooting is like improvisation for us. Most of the time we don’t know the subject, nor the location. It’s very exciting. Each one with their own fears and difficulties, men and women who have never been in front of a camera. It is also very hard because we’re only shooting with natural light and no postproduction at all.
TK:What fascinates you about the genre of nude portraits? AP: We’re fascinated by the different kind of bodies and people we meet. Everytime a surprise. It’s a continuous challenge. Very stimulating.
TK: What are you trying to bring out of them in this project. AP: We hope that the message “beauty in every body”would reach most of our audience. There’s a deep photographic research behind Reality Project, which has been fundamental to continue to produce images and trying to maintain a high standard. Everyone being photographed has their own story. And photographing is like interviewing them. We become part of their lives for a couple of hours and they become part of ours. Giving everything we can, on both sides. All those who were in front of our camera have come out stronger, and for us this is very satisfying.
TK: Its a contrast to the rest of your work, since we also know you as a Fashion Week and Backstage photographer? AP: The backstage it’s only a part of my work, there is things you have to do for a living, and other you need to do for your soul. Reality Project is the soul part.
TK: What was your most memorable moment shooting the REALITY PROJECT? AP: The first shooting was Amazing. It was like “the first time” for everybody. But we ended up very relaxed and the shooting went very smooth. I remember a few shootings after when a girl went to another room to take her clothes off. That was very funny!
TK: How has REALITY PROJECT changed the way you look at the world and what have you learnt about yourself? AP: Taking pictures of naked bodies (almost weekly) is something becoming very normal. We got used to it very easily. It’s a very natural thing, and even our subjects at the end of the shooting feel much better about themselves and their body. They’ve been all very nice and relaxed by now.
TK:We mostly see women so far in this project.. Why? AP: The project is 100% volunteer, so we can not put a filter on who signs up. Men, however, seem a lot more shy than women. If we think in percentages, men candidates are less than 5%.
TK:What’s next for this project AP: To make a book.

Episode 25: REALITY PROJECT by ALMA PHOTOS
When did you decide to start shooting girls? What was your “mental process” behind the decision?
Alessandro: Last summer. When I’ve finally realized I got sick of those pictures of nude stunning models we’re surrounded by. Mainly because those pictures are very very far from reality. The “mental process” was: “Let’s do it different. Let’s do it real”. We’re shooting also men by the way.. Only, they seem to be much more shy than women.
Matteo: I couldn’t tell it exactly. I always liked to shoot naked women… I used to do that with my girlfriends of the time. Reality Project gave me the chance to do that with somebody I don’t know, which I think is very stimulating.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
A: Pee, check mail.
M: I make coffee and switch on the phone to check the social networks.
Does your mother appreciate your pictures?
A: Yes, she does.
M: Sometimes
A movie that we should watch.
A: Apart from Billy Wilder’s masterpiece “Some like it hot”, I would recommend “You, the Living” by Roy Andersson, “Bikur Ha-Tizmoret” (La Banda) by Eran Kolirin, Maradona by Kusturica and “La leggenda di Kaspar Hauser” by Davide Manuli. I know, they’re five. Fuck.
M: Moonrise kingdom by Wes Anderson.
Who is your “dream” model? Where would you love to set your shooting?
A: The girl next door, in her house.
M: Hard to say… they would be too many. Maybe Alba Rohrwacher
Are you keeping your work secret to someone?
A: No. When you’re using social networks, it’s difficult to keep something secret to someone.
M: No, never.
Are you usually turned on by the model you are shooting?
A: Usually not. We’re shooting very different people for this project. We always do our best to create a good feeling with our models, but to be turned on, I would say not really, so far.
M: No, never…but if it had happened it would have been normal.
Name three photographers that you consider masters.
A: Normally I would have said someone like Luigi ghiri, Robert Frank, William Klein…
But I feel like naming three that I consider the NEW Italian masters. Alessandro Grassani, Nanni Fontana and Erik Messori.
Ah… also Fernando Brito, the genius. I know, they’re seven. Fuck.
M: August Sander, Diane Arbus, Eliott Erwitt.
Did any model ever get mad at you because she was looking “ugly” in your pictures?
A: Not yet!
M: No, never.
What do you do in your free time?
A: Other than shooting naked bodies? I adore sailing whenever I can, ride my bike, watch movies and sleep. The last two things often simultaneously.
M: Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of it. I love to swim.
What is the difference between a good nude picture and an amazing one?
A: A good nude picture stops at the nude. The amazing one goes over.
M: The amazing one has to be original and true. If it tells a story, then is even better.
Who is, in your opinion, the most overrated nude photographer? And the one who is not appreciate yet?
A: Terry Richardson. He’s just “over” in every sense. Good and bad.
M: No comment.
Your biggest fault
A: To be obstinate and not a great decision maker.
M: The frenzy in doing things.
What does your partner think about your work?
A: She hates being photographed, but luckily she likes most of it.
M: She loves it.
Do you remember your dreams in the morning? Are you able to interpret them?
A: Sometimes I do, but they’re often quite weird and I don’t even try to interpret them.
M: It’s rare. I’m not able to interpret them.
REALITY PROJECT, LA BELLEZZA RISIEDE IN OGNI CORPO DI DONNA
Nobody is perfect, no-body is perfect. Un occhio reale che non lascia spazio a inutili ritocchi, né a prospettive irreali, immaginate e idealizzate. L’obiettivo di una fotocamera che immortala, in quell’esatto istante, quella posizione, quell’immagine vera, praticamente tangibile. Non c’è niente di ritoccato, di falsato. I colori sono naturali e il corpo è nudo, così com’è, senza inganno alcuno.
La bellezza non perfetta ma unica, esclusiva, semplice è stata raccontata da Matteo Scarpellini e Alessandro Viganò senza fronzoli né imbrogli. Reality Project raccoglie i contributi spontanei di donne che si amano per quello che sono, che mostrano a nudo la loro bellezza. Vere, prive di ritocchi e di fotoritocchi.
