I have updated my subscription details and downloaded the Microsoft office suite twice, but every time I try to open a document on my laptop it says the word or excel documents have run into a problem and need to be repaired! It then doesn't go any further to say how and what repair to do!

I am Prakash and happy to help you with your question, I'm a Microsoft consumer like you.
Please follow below steps which should help you to resolve the issue.
Go to Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Select Office -> Right click -> Select Uninstall -> Then Reboot your computer
1. Disable any Antivirus program or Windows firewall you may have for temporary purpose.
2. Cleanup below Temp folders location -> Open Start -> Run -> Type below location one-by-one and press enter
C:\Windows\Temp
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp
3. Run sfc /scannow from elevated prompt.
4. Run below DISM commands from elevated prompt.
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
5. Go to Office.com -> Sign with your subscription account -> Select Install Office.
