Mehroswitha , February 24 in Q&A with InsureMyTrip - 2023

Ten years ago we had a large and rather complicated claim with Travel Guard, and they handled it so well that we've been insuring all our trips with them ever since. We could not have hoped for better service.

As we've gotten older, though, their charges have gone up a great deal. I understand why this is so but wonder if some other company might provide comparable coverage at a more modest cost.

We're active 75-year-olds and travel primarily in Europe and the US. Because it makes claims so much simpler, we prefer that the medical coverage be primary rather than secondary. Coverage of previously existing conditions is important to us--and we always purchase insurance well within time deadlines to qualify for that coverage. Hospital-to-hospital evacuation is not important since we have an annual policy with MedJetAssist.

The price of a comprehensive travel policy is determined in part by age. Another company will not offer significant saving for similar coverage.

Older travelers find cruise line insurance attractive because the cost is based on a percentage of cruise fare. Age is not a factor. However, cruise line insurance likely will not meet your needs since it provides secondary coverage.

Also, from everything I have read, cruise line insurance covers much less medical. The possible medical expense I believe should be the primary reason to buy trip insurance.

You’re right about lower levels of coverage in cruise line insurance, but the OP asked about how to reduce cost. There really isn’t a better way to get the kind of coverage they had because third-party policies factor age in the cost.

I did not suggest an annual policy even though that is a way to get good medical coverage. Such policies offer little or nothing for travel risks such as cancellation. The ones that offer both also have have limitations. Many people rely on their credit card benefits for cancellation, but that is not a good strategy for someone with pre-existing conditions since credit card travel benefits do not cover them.

Yes, but you have to consider what you need to cover. If you lose what you paid for the trip, that is unfortunate but should not bankrupt you as you planned to pay this. An astronomical bill for medical and or medical evacuation can totally destroy you financially. If the cheaper cruise line insurance does not really cover what you need, what good is it?

As we've gotten older, we have become more concerned about medical limits and less concerned about insuring the value of the trip itself. We purchase IMG insurance through Trip Insurance Store. Owner Steve posts here a lot and they are very helpful! Coverage is primary and med limits are good. We use a $500 trip cost which keeps the premium affordable. As far as insuring the cost of the trip itself, we charge the trip expenses to our Chase Sapphire credit card which offers travel insurance. While we haven't had to file a claim through Chase, we did file a med claim with IMG and it was handled just fine. In November 2022, DH had to visit ship's medical center (long story short, cough that required antibiotics and bill was $1760). We uploaded requested docs to the IMG website and felt the claim was paid in a timely manner.

I agree. I was merely responding to the OP’s question about finding a lower cost option.

As I mentioned earlier, many depend on their credit card travel benefits for cancellation/ interruption. This is not likely to work for the OP since she/he specifically mentioned that the pre-existing conditions waiver was important to them.

Neither Chase nor any other credit card covers pre-existing conditions for the cardholder, traveling companion, or family member. Anyone who relies on credit card coverage needs to be clear about what this means and how it might impact them.

Yes, I think we agree. You can lower the cost, but the value there then will not be what you need.

OP here. Many thanks to all of you for your input.

It appears that sticking with Travel Guard is probably the best course for us. Other options seem unlikely to save us any significant amount without giving up important elements of the coverage we've been purchasing. Plus, TG deserves some degree of loyalty from us for their past exemplary handling of a large and potentially messy claim.

Just part of the high cost of aging, I guess! We're very fortunate to still be able to enjoy travel as we grow older even if it does get more expensive.

Your welcome, and for what it's worth, we have Travel Guard for our upcoming cruise. We have had (knock on wood) only one very small claim with them in the past, and it was promptly paid.

We were also reimbursed our insurance premium in 2020 when we cancelled due to the epidemic (Princess did soon after). But that is a NY state insurance Commissioner ruling about there was nothing to insure, so you get your premium back. As far as I know, no other state does this. (But the same logic keeps NY state from allowing CFAR insurance as they do not see you cancelling as something insurable.)

I get your point and agree with you. But for us, pre-existing conditions is important for the medical coverage. The cost of the cruise is secondary and we essentially self-insure that expense using the credit card insurance as a possible back-up. And again, agreeing with you... credit card insurance should not be relied upon in every circumstance.

How do we contact Travel Guard, or do they have a web sight to get information? We are looking for economical travel insurance for this cruise. Any help and/or suggestions would be appreciated. We are ages 76 and 73 and if fairly good health; we stay active and have typical health/hospital insurance. Thanks!

I suggest that you re-post this on the general Travel Insurance section of CC where it will get more appropriate attention:

Meanwhile, to help you out, we use a travel insurance broker, because there is no extra charge to the traveler for doing so.

You may well end up with a Travel Guard policy, but just in case there is some other company with a policy that is better for *your* specific travel needs, it might be nice to be aware of some of the options.

Or just contact a broker and ask for the specific policy if you already know precisely which policy you want.

When we call TripInsuranceStore, thus far we always get the same policy through them from Travel Insured. We are just slightly older than you. But that may not be the best for you of course.

(There was one time we got a policy from another insurer through TIS. We had missed a deadline because we really did not think we would be going on the trip and didn't want to have to start the insurance 2 years in advance (!). So we got the "next best" policy. Fortunately, that was a trip where we did *not* have a claim, so all was good. 🙂 )
