MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian court on Tuesday convicted top opposition leader Alexei Navalny of fraud and contempt of court, sentencing him to nine more years in prison in a move that was seen as an attempt to keep President Vladimir Putin’s biggest foe behind bars for as long as possible.
The new sentence follows a year-long crackdown by Putin on Navalny’s supporters, other opposition activists and independent journalists in which authorities appear eager to stifle all dissent.
Navalny’s close associates have faced criminal charges and left the country, and his group’s political infrastructure — an anti-corruption foundation and a nationwide network of regional offices — has been destroyed after being labeled an extremist organization.
The 45-year-old Navalny, who in 2020 survived a poisoning with a nerve agent that he blames on the Kremlin, is already serving 2½ years in a penal colony east of Moscow for a parole violation. The new trial was held in a makeshift courtroom at the facility.
In a Facebook post by his team shortly after the sentence, the usually sardonic Navalny said: “My space flight is taking a bit longer than expected.”
He added that neither he nor his comrades “will simply wait,” announcing that his Anti-Corruption Foundation will become an international organization that will “fight (Putin) until we win.”
“We will find all of their mansions in Monaco, their villas in Miami, their riches everywhere — and when we do, we will take everything from the criminal Russian elite,” the foundation’s new website said.
His new conviction is on charges of embezzling money that he and his foundation raised over the years and of insulting a judge during a previous trial. Navalny, who will appeal the ruling, has rejected the allegations as politically motivated.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Ned Price condemned the court’s “sham ruling” as “the latest in a series of attempts to silence Navalny and other opposition figures and independent voices.”
Germany also denounced the verdict, with its Foreign Ministry calling it “part of the systematic instrumentalization of the Russian judicial system against dissidents and the political opposition.”
It wasn’t immediately clear whether Navalny must serve the new nine-year sentence in addition to the 2½ years, or where he will serve it. Prosecutors originally asked for a 13-year sentence. The judge also imposed a fine of 1.2 million rubles (about $11,500).
Navalny’s Twitter account responded to the nine-year sentence by citing “The Wire” television series: “Well, as the characters of my favorite TV series ‘The Wire’ used to say: ‘You only do two days. That’s the day you go in and the day you come out.’ I even had a T-shirt with this slogan, but the prison authorities confiscated it, considering the print extremist.”
Even his lawyers, Olga Mikhailova and Vadim Kobzev, were detained shortly after they commented to reporters on the ruling, although Mikhailova told the Medizona news outlet that the police let them go without any charges.
Navalny’s supporters criticized the decision to move the trial, which opened about a month ago, to the prison, instead of holding it in Moscow. They said it effectively limited access to the proceedings for the media and supporters.
He appeared at hearings in prison garb and made several elaborate speeches, decrying the charges as bogus.
Navalny fell ill while on a domestic flight in 2020 and was diagnosed with being poisoned by a chemical nerve agent Novichok, although Russian officials vehemently denied his accusations that they had any role. He was transferred for treatment to Germany, where he recovered for five months.
He was arrested upon returning to Russia in January 2021, triggering the biggest protests seen in the country in recent years. The next month, a Moscow court ordered him to prison for violating terms of his parole on a 2014 embezzlement conviction that the European Court of Human Rights deemed to be “arbitrary and manifestly unreasonable.”
Authorities then unleashed the sweeping crackdown on his organization, associates and supporters. Last month, Russian officials added him and a number of his colleagues to a state registry that labeled them extremists and terrorists.
Several criminal cases have been launched against Navalny individually, leading his associates to suggest the Kremlin intends to keep him behind bars indefinitely.
Navalny’s closest ally and longtime strategist Leonid Volkov tweeted Tuesday from abroad that the plan will fail. “Putin plans and has been planning a lot of things: to make Russia one of the top-five world economies, to take over Kyiv in 96 hours, to kill Navalny with Novichok. His plans have always failed. So will these nine years,” Volkov said.

Built in 1874, and one of Colorado's oldest hotels, the Windsor has been the heart of the town of Del Norte for nearly 140 years. Originally known as "The Whitsitt House", this “Grand Dame’s” construction started soon after the town was founded in 1871. In the last quarter of the 1800's, Del Norte was a booming and thriving mining and ranching hub. Once on the short list for the capital of Colorado, Del Norte lost by one vote to Denver as state capital. The Windsor Hotel was the focal point of social and commercial activity in San Luis Valley area and remained a regional gathering spot for over a hundred years. Del Norte, remained a prospering and influential town in south western Colorado until the early 1970's. The Windsor Hotel too, began to reflect the area’s decline. By 1993, the hotel was dilapidated and in a state of ruination. A wrecking ball was literally looming over the decaying and lifeless “Victorian Lady” as she awaited her final fate. With amazing foresight and dedication, a local benefactor and his wife, Doctor Raymond & Mrs. Barbra Culp, stepped in to save the Windsor from demolition, literally at the last minute (the hotel lounge, Bistro Barbara, is named after Mrs. Culp in her honor). Over the past 20 years, several phases of reconstruction, restoration and regeneration have produceded an eloquent lodging and dining establishment. Highlights are a "turn-of-the-century" parlor, elegant dining and event rooms, and a living history interpretive area.

What an absolutely lovely, lovely place with extraordinary professional and personalized service. This is where you want to stay. There is such an authenticity to the vintage building and the beautiful furniture, but everything feels so fresh and clean. I can't wait to stay again and plan to time my long trip drive to make it possible. Top notch, can't find anything to criticize!

Very authentic old west kind of place, but surprisingly upscale for vintage and location. Photogenic. Location is also very convenient. Friendly folks. Great experience all around. My favorite lodging in the San Luis Valley.

The restaurant was restored in 2009, and we enjoyed the experience as well as the food. We can recommend the steak. I had two appetizers as my meal: the salad and meat/cheese board. My review would have been excellent if the steak had been trimmed better.

We stayed here at Thanksgiving. It was a pleasant stay and one of our most unusual because we never saw one human the entire time. We checked in around 9pm on Thanksgiving. We knew the restaurant was closed that day but thought we'd see some folks in the lobby or at the desk. Nobody. Our key was in a lockbox for us. We went to our room and read the various plaques on the doors of some rooms. It was neat. Our room faced the main street and it can get noisy when large trucks come barreling down the road. But, overall, we slept fine. When we checked out the next morning, at 10am, it was still a ghost hotel. We left our key, like so many other ghost guests had, sitting on the counter, and headed out. I would return and it was sort of nice having the entire hotel to ourselves. Certainly a first. …

Beautiful hotel with friendly staff who made us feel at home. The room was nicely updated and had convenient parking right outside the front door. Within easy walking distance of restaurants and other businesses. They have done a nice job of displaying the extensive hotel history. I would definitely recommend a stay here!

We were heading back from the Grand Canyon to our home in Colorado, and we stopped overnight at The Windsor Hotel. Our family of four stayed in the family suite which worked well (bed, couch and cot), and we loved the dinner in the dining room and breakfast from the food truck in the courtyard. You pull up to this quaint hotel with easy self-parking and a wonderful feel. The bar is warm, cozy and sophisticated at the same time, and the dining room is lovely. A wonderful place to stay!

The windsor hotel is such a cute and charming hotel. We ended up picking this place because the reviews were good and price was good for the area. But there are a couple of things to be aware of. The walls are super thin you can hear the person in the next room talking so bring a fan or some headphones to help sleep. The other thing the hotel is super hard to get ahold of they say due to “staffing issues”. I left my pillow there and we called numerous times and even tried to go back by the hotel and the door was locked. (i know my fault for leaving my pillow) I feel like there should be a better way to communicate with them.

Room temp very difficult to control. Understand not changing linens every day; however, would have been nice to have more than 1 coffee filter since there was no one at the desk in the mornings to obtain more nor was anyone available at housekeeping. Came home with a cold due to room always being cold even though temp was set at 71, the room temp was in the 60s. A good thing that a comforter was provided or would have been cold even in bed. Shower stall is VERY small so a large person would have difficulty taking a shower. The heat lamp in the bathroom provides extra light but very little heat. Access to restaurants in town was very good as could walk to them. Could feel vibrations of some type of equipment running once in bed.

The hotel was perfect in everyway. My favorite part was that almost all the rooms had plaques on the doors commemorating families who donated money in honor of their local ancestors to refurbish the rooms! Then inside the room was a framed poster with an explanation of that family. It was such a unique way for the hotel to highlight it's history as well as having help with the renovations. I loved it!

A beautiful facility in a great location. The staff really goes the extra mile to make your stay comfortable. Well appointed rooms with excellent WiFi. The restaurant is superb. A quality establishment all around.
Room Tip: Rooms facing Hwy 160 catch a lot of traffic noise during the day.
