Hi there, planning a trip to Florida for one week in the near future. We will fly into the Fort Lauderdale airport and I'm hoping to pre-book a car rental and pick it up at the terminal. I did this several years ago when prices seemed to be much cheaper. I'm looking for any advice for cost savings, but also on which add on's I need to avoid. The last time, they told me that they highly recommend I add the road toll package. I also have car rental insurance protection on my credit card, so I plan to opt of any insurance they offer. Appreciate any advice.
They seem to use E-toll now, not sure if you can avoid it, but that's a cost that I wasn't anticipating on my last rental. Like everything, car rentals have gone up a fair bit. I usually keep checking expedia and messing with the time of days sometimes gives different prices.
I just came back from Florida, 30 mins north of Fort Lauderdale, and the Turnpike (#1) was "death by a thousand tolls" and totally unnecessary IMHO so I would avoid especially since the #95 was not far away and wasn't congested at all. But I didn't go during rush hour, and I didn't go as far south as Fort Lauderdale.

I had a Uni E-Pass Transponder which did all the tolls down from NY state to Florida. Really only NY, WV and Peace Bridge But depends on the routes you go. It also covers Sunpass tolls in Florida.
www.cfxway.com/uni/
www.amazon.ca/Prepaid-Portable-Automati ... B08C3T3KYR
www.amazon.com/Prepaid-Portable-Automat ... B08C3T3KYR

You can determine your tolls here
https://tollguru.com/toll-calculator
Or via this map
www.sunpass.com/en/tolls/tollsSunPass.shtml
It used to be only death and taxes were inevitable. Now, of course, there's shipping and handling, too.
You can pickup a portable Sunpass transponder at any Publix supermarket or CVS pharmacy. Setup an account online to fund it. It is alot cheaper than what the rental car companies charge.End of
your trip take it home with you and you can use it again next time you or family are down south.
As far as renting a car. Chose an offsite location. I usually rent from Avis on Bayshore drive next to the Ave W Hotel. It is about a $15 Uber ride from the airport and will probably save you $100-$150.
Another vote for a EPass UNI Transponder
Buy it once
Have it forever

We too got ours from the Central Florida Expressway Authority … but lots of States sell the universal units now (good for 19 States) including NY State

There’s an RFD MegaThread on this topic = https://forums.redflagdeals.com/us-toll ... e-2316489/
It talks a lot about how to get one while in NY State
But lots of us just ordered them off Amazon.com too

No matter which one you buy / use
Just tell the Rental Car Co you’ll be proving your own Transponder

Toll Roads are now just about everywhere in Florida
Esp the farther south you go
So a transponder which gives you a discount is a good idea !!!
If flying into MCO, you can also pick up a free transponder at the airport:

I didn't check rental prices in ages. Wow, did I ever get a sticker shock !!!

Did prices went up because of the car shortage since Covid ?

Thanks,
If I were to rent a car at MCO and just hang around the touristy Orlando area, how much would tolls be?
Last time we went was pre-COVID and had no transponder and I don’t recall any surprises on final car rental bill so it couldn’t be too bad, right?!

Most car rental companies sold off a huge percentage of their fleets just to survive during COVID and demand far outweighs supply due to increased travel now.

Booked for a week during March Break out of FLL for US$311 all in for a full size vehicle.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've order the UNI transponder from Amazon. Now on to my car rental search. I was also advised to look at Turo.

From where? Seems like a great deal under the current conditions.

Budget using a corporate code with ID required. I would add I’m able to obtain a rate only US$20 higher from Hertz using autoslash.com - I would recommend obtaining a quote there for your needs.

is this site legit? I tried it and got a quote for $309 for next week for an intermediate car from Thrifty. Much cheaper than I got from Budget.

Car rental rates in Florida have exploded!
100Pacer wrote: ↑
It’s legit - based on the selections you made incorporating membership and credit card privileges the corresponding codes are utilized for the booking. In some cases validation isn’t required but when presented with your options any restrictions will be displayed, for example if a Costco membership is required upon pick up.

Your credit card won't have liability insurance, so make sure you bring that. If you don't have it already you will have to purchase it, either from the rental agency or in Canada before you leave.

This doesn't sound accurate at all and I can't find anywhere that says this is mandatory.
