An automotive supercharger includes a blower wheel (2), which is situated, in use, in the inlet duct of an automotive engine that is connected to a shaft (4) and a turbine wheel (6), which is also connected to the shaft (4) and is situated, in use, in the exhaust duct of the engine. The shaft (4) is also connected to one shaft of a three branch differential comprising an epicyclic gear train. A second shaft of the differential is connected to the rotor (28) of an electric motor/generator unit, the electrical connections of the stator (30) of which are connected, in use, to a battery via a controller arranged to control the electrical power flow between the battery and the stator. The third shaft of the differential is connected to a mechanical input shaft, which is connected, in use, to be rotated by the engine.
The present invention relates to automotive superchargers, which are devices which are incorporated in automotive engines and include a blower or impeller, 5 which is situated in the engine inlet duct and is arranged to be rotated at high speed to produce a boost pressure, that is to say to increase the pressure in the inlet duct to a superatmospheric value. The result of this increased inlet pressure is that a greater amount of air is admitted into each cylinder of the engine during the induction stroke of the pistons in the cylinders which results 10 in more rapid or complete combustion of the fuel in the cylinders and thus in an increased power output from the engine.
Traditionally, superchargers were driven mechanically by the engine, e.g. from the crankshaft via a geartrain. The disadvantage of this is that the speed of the 15 blower is proportional to the speed of the engine which means that when the engine is running at low speed or idling the blower rotates at a speed which is insufficient to produce an appreciable boost pressure. Most superchargers have, therefore, for many years been driven by a turbine wheel situated in the engine exhaust duct, in which form they are commonly known as turbochargers. The 20 power absorbed by such a turbine is proportional to the cube of the speed of the exhaust gases which means that although the blower rotates very rapidly and thus produces a substantial boost pressure at high engine speed, it does not rotate at all or only at negligible speed at low engine speed. This means again that no boost pressure is available at a time when maximum engine power is 25 frequently required, i.e. when accelerating rapidly from engine idle speed. It is known to overcome this problem in diesel engines by providing guide vanes of variable pitch in the exhaust duct to enable the local exhaust gas speed to be
( 2 increased and thus the power output of the turbine wheel to be increased, even at low engine speed. However, such a construction is complex and expensive and subject to failure as a result of lubrication problems. In order to counteract this problem, there has in recent years been a move to using positive 5 displacement superchargers, e.g. incorporating a screw compressor, mechanically driven by the engine. However, such superchargers still suffer from the problem of too low a boost pressure at low engine speeds and furthermore screw compressors and the like are extremely expensive.
10 It is therefore the object of the invention to provide a supercharger which is economical and which is capable of producing a boost pressure which is independent of the engine speed.
According to the present invention an automotive supercharger includes a 15 blower wheel, which, in use, is situated in the inlet duct of an automotive engine, and a turbine wheel, which is connected to the shaft and, in use, is situated in the exhaust duct of the engine, the shaft also being connected to one shaft of a three branch differential, a second shaft of the differential being connected to the rotor of an electric generator unit, the electrical connections of 20 the stator of which are connected, in use, to a battery via a controller arranged to control the electrical power flow between the battery and the stator, the third shaft of the differential being connected to a mechanical input shaft, which, in use, is connected to be rotated by the engine. It is preferred that the three branch differential is an epicyclic train which includes a sunwheel, an annulus 25 wheel and a plurality of planet wheels connected to a common carrier, the said one shaft of the differential being connected to the sunwheel, the said second shaft being connected to the annulus wheel and the said third shaft being
f 3 connected to the common carrier. The differential may, however, take other forms, e.g. it may comprise spur gears.
The supercharger in accordance with the invention is thus of new hybrid type 5 and driven both mechanically by the engine and by a turbine wheel driven by the engine exhaust gases, the proportions of the power supplied to the blower wheel by the engine and the turbine wheel varying with the engine speed. At low engine speeds, at which the turbine wheel generates little or no power, the blower wheel is driven mechanically by the engine via the mechanical input 10 shaft, which is coupled to the engine, e.g. to the engine crankshaft, by e.g. gearing or a toothed belt or the like, on the epicyclic train. The controller is operated to permit a predetermined amount of power to flow from the generator unit to the battery and since the annulus wheel is rotated by the engine the generator unit produces electrical power which recharges the battery. This 15 generation of electricity brakes the annulus wheel which thus provides a torque reaction resulting in an increase in the speed of the shaft. By appropriate adjustment of the controller in dependence on e.g. the position of the accelerator pedal, the speed of the shaft and thus of the blower wheel may therefore be controlled to produce a boost pressure which is the optimum for the 20 instantaneous power requirement, regardless of the engine speed. At high engine speeds, the turbine wheel provides sufficient power to rotate the blower wheel at the high speeds that may be required and the controller is controlled, e.g. by the electronic engine management system, which is now canonry provided and of which the controller may form part to provide little or no torque 25 reaction. indeed, at very high engine speeds the turbine wheel may produce power in excess of that required by the blower wheel and this excess power may be fed back into the engine and used to partially power the vehicle.
( 4 It is preferred that the generator unit is a motor/generator unit and thus may be driven as a motor by the battery under the control of the controller. This permits the anr,ulus wheel not only to be braked but actually to be driven in the 5 reverse direction to that in which it would normally be driven by the mechanical input from the engine, thereby permitting an even greater torque reaction to be provided and thus an even greater speed and/or rate of increase of speed of the blower wheel to be achieved, even at low engine speed.
10 Supercharger blower wheels typically rotate at very high speeds of e.g. up to 150,000 r.p.m. or even more. In order to be able to achieve such speeds it may be desirable to incorporate step up gearing between the sunwheel and the shaft.
Such gearing may be e.g. an epicyclic gearset and may have a step up ratio of e.g. between 3 and 10, typically 5.
The provision of the motor/generator unit also opens up the possibility of the vehicle in which the engine is fitted being of hybrid type. Thus at those times when power is required in excess of that which the engine is capable of providing, the motor/generator unit may be operated, under the control of the 20 controller, as a motor and the power which it produces in excess of that required to rotate the blower wheel at the desired speed is fed back to the engine. The motor/generator unit may also take over the function not only of the conventional alternator, and thus be responsible for recharging the battery, but also of the conventional starter motor. In order to prevent the power produced 25 by the motor/generator unit being expended in rotating the blower wheel, it is preferred that there is a rotary lock which is selectively operable to prevent rotation of the shaft.
