So my four month old has discovered her fingers over the last couple weeks and likes to stick like a couple in at a time. I figured it's good she's exploring her body and discovered her fingers but she's gagged herself several times from too many in the mouth or too far in... She won't take a pacifier I've tried a billion... Should I worry? Does anyone else's baby do this? I figured she'd learn by now that it is not a pleasant feeling considering she already has reflux but apparently not!
My husband just saw my LO doing that about an hour ago! I think it's probably normal and they just have to figure it out. I just wonder how long it will take them to figure it out! Haha my LO won't take a paci either.
My baby does the same thing! I think it's normal but I do try to give her a toy or a snuggly blanket when I see her doing it so she usually ends up chewing on those things instead :)
Totally normal... Only lasted about a week for us. I haven't seen or heard my son gag himself lately and he still chews on his fingers all the time! :-)
Poor guy even made himself throw up a few times while he was figuring all this out.
Oh dear! I was wondering if they could make themselves sick... poor thing!! My little one has discovered her hands and is definitely gagging herself constantly!! Glad it doesn't last too long!
Their gag reflex is triggered much more shallowly in their mouths than an adults. It's a safety measure to keep them from choking at this age. Eventually the gag reflex moves further back in their throats and they figure stuff out. Until then, it's just a normal (if unpleasant) side effect of trial and error and exploring their bodies!
Exactly! It prepares them to work on lateralizing their food. Toys like the banana toothbrush are also good for this and again prepares them for solids.
My little girl started doing this around 3 months. She'll gag herself and smile SO big like it's the greatest thing lol. She's so crazy.
The only thing my LO will suck on is her hand. Sometimes it's a couple of fingers sometimes she almost gets her whole fist in her mouth. She has refused a paci from day one. Sometimes I can get her to chew on a toy for a little but not long and she's right back to her hands. She knaws on her fists all day long, I feel sorry for when she breaks a tooth and bites herself.
Same here. She's been doing it for like, 3 weeks now lol weirdos
Same here, my LO does it all the time! Been doing it for weeks. I've offered other toys to chew, but no, just interested in her fingers all day long!
