Gaza humanitarian crisis (2023–present)The Gaza Strip is experiencing a humanitarian crisis as a result of the Gaza war. The crisis includes both an impending famine and a healthcare collapse. At the start of the war, Israel tightened its blockade on the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in significant shortages of fuel, food, medication, water, and essential medical supplies. This siege resulted in a 90% drop in electricity availability, impacting hospital power supplies, sewage plants, and shutting down the desalination plants that provide drinking water. Doctors warned of disease outbreaks spreading due to overcrowded hospitals. Heavy bombardment by Israeli airstrikes caused catastrophic damage to Gaza’s infrastructure, further deepening the crisis. The Gaza Health Ministry reported over 4,000 children killed in the war's first month. UN Secretary General António Guterres stated Gaza had "become a graveyard for children." In May 2024, the USAID head Samantha Power stated that conditions in Gaza were "worse than ever before". Organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, the Red Cross, and a joint statement by UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the UN Development Programme, United Nations Population Fund, and World Food Programme have warned of a dire humanitarian collapse. In early March 2025, Israel began a complete blockade of all food and supplies going into Gaza, ending only in late May with limited distribution by the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

May 2025 drone attack on Gaza Freedom FlotillaIn the early morning on 2 May 2025, a vessel organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, carrying 16 to 30 human rights activists and humanitarian aid destined for the Gaza Strip, was attacked by drones in international waters off the coast of Malta. The incident occurred approximately 14–17 nautical miles (26–31 km) from Malta, outside its territorial waters. There is no independent confirmation of the nature of the incident, although Cyprus responded by dispatching a rescue boat, and the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) sent a patrol boat to assist with extinguishing the fire. Maltese authorities offered assistance, but insisted on inspecting the vessel first. The captain declined the offer.

Gaza Humanitarian FoundationThe Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) is an American organization, based in Delaware, established in February 2025 to distribute humanitarian aid during the ongoing Gaza humanitarian crisis. Formerly led by executive director Jake Wood until his resignation on May 25, 2025, it has the backing of the Trump administration and the Israeli government. It has been criticised by the United Nations and humanitarian groups for politicizing aid distribution, with well-established humanitarian groups saying the GHF is giving cover for Israel to pursue its aims to depopulate Gaza from Palestinians, and its former head questioning the group's impartiality and neutrality upon his resignation. As of June 10, 2025, more than 130 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces during "aid distribution" by GHF. Survivors of the repeated mass killings perpetrated at the distribution sites have begun to refer to the Israeli-backed operation as traps or death traps rather than aid.

Rafah aid distribution incidentsSince 27 May 2025, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and wounded by Israeli gunfire as they approached a newly established aid distribution site in Rafah in the Gaza Strip, operated by the United States-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). 10 Palestinians were killed and 62 were wounded in the 27 May incident, while another 32 were killed and over 250 were injured on 1 June. The incidents began taking place on the first day of the GHF's operations, following an 11-week Israeli blockade since early March 2025 that had severely restricted humanitarian aid to Gaza, exacerbating the Gaza humanitarian crisis.

June 2025 Gaza Freedom FlotillaThe June 2025 Gaza Freedom Flotilla was a humanitarian maritime campaign organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) attempting to break the Israeli naval blockade of the Gaza Strip and deliver humanitarian aid. The flotilla, which was led by the UK-flagged vessel Madleen, departed from Catania, Sicily, on 1 June 2025. In the early hours of 9 June, Israeli forces intercepted, boarded, and seized the Madleen outside of any country's territorial waters, preventing it from reaching the Gaza Strip, and detained the people onboard. The twelve people onboard included Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and French MEP Rima Hassan. According to Hassan, the cargo contained baby formula, 100 kg (220 lb) of flour, 250 kg (550 lb) of rice, diapers (nappies), medical kits, and crutches. The flotilla followed an earlier attempt on 2 May, when the vessel Conscience was struck with projectiles off the coast of Malta, but outside its territorial waters.
