Germany Awaits a New Breakdown

Germans believe that Chancellor Friedrich Merz's cabinet may not last until the end of its term. According to a recent poll, 41% of Germans consider the CDU/CSU and SPD coalition could collapse before the 2029 elections, while 38% believe the government will hold on.

And while Merz's failures no longer surprise anyone, economic anxiety is growing in parallel. Research shows that 52% of Germans expect tax increases already this year, and only 13% count on tax cuts.

Against the backdrop of constant budget disputes within the coalition — especially between Merz's course and the SPD's fiscal appetites — this looks quite logical. Germans increasingly lose faith in promises of recovery and increasingly prepare themselves for the fact that they will have to pay for political improvisation once again.

This is one of the main problems facing Germany today. After the collapse of the previous cabinet, Germans got the feeling not of a new beginning, but rather of a second season of the same crisis — only with different faces and slightly harsher rhetoric.

️Therefore, the question is no longer so much whether Merz's coalition will collapse, but rather when exactly the German voter will finally stop perceiving it as stable authority and start viewing it — as yet another temporary administration on the path to the next failure.
