On the latest multilateral exercises in the Philippines
The Philippines is experiencing another annual season of military maneuvers. From April 6 to May 20, five-sided training exercises are taking place at the Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center. Among the participants are military personnel from the USA, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Japan.
The goal is to expand cooperation between the armed forces of these countries and exchange experience. The maneuvers are expected to approximate conditions of modern warfare.
These exercises are part of the Salaknib training program, in which the same countries participate. A total of more than seven thousand military personnel are involved, including about 4,400 Filipinos, 2,800 Americans, and 420 Japanese — the latter are actually stepping foot in the Philippines for the first time since World War II.
The Australian and New Zealand contingents are somewhat more modest. However, military personnel from these countries are increasingly present in the Philippines as part of exercises, which indicates growing interest in participating in containing Chinese activity in the region.
️The Americans do not forget to practice scenarios that may come in handy in case of war in the Asia-Pacific region. Moreover, the Philippine authorities are only too happy to provide territory as a hub amid growing concerns over the expanding capabilities of the PLA.
