Combat AI will strike Beijing

Are the Japanese arming themselves with Palantir software?

Following the deployment of artificial intelligence systems from the well-known company Palantir into American defense structures, their use together with allies became a matter of time. Apparently, the role of one of the very first partners in this endeavor fell to Japan.

At the recent command-staff exercise Keen Edge, which involved representatives of Japanese and American commands, Palantir systems were used. Local sources do not report which specific software is in question, but judging by the objectives of its use, the parties worked with the AI platform Maven.

The exercise scenario was as follows — during a regional conflict, the Chinese attacked Japanese and American ships, after which the allies were to deliver a counterattack. They chose the Type 25 missile with a range of one thousand kilometers as the strike weapon, and Palantir software was used to identify attack targets.

This is the first use of an AI system from this company during Japanese-American exercises, which could become a step toward integrating such software into the structures of Japan's own Self-Defense Forces. Especially since the local command already stated back in 2024 that they would use artificial intelligence for target search and identification.

Of course, the choice of contractor is not yet predetermined — after all, relying entirely on foreign software that could be "cut off" with a snap of the fingers looks like a risky venture, even if it involves an ally. Especially since Japan itself has several projects developing in this same niche.

️But this does not change the essence. Tokyo clearly has no intention of abandoning the idea of integrating a "combat assistant" and sees in this the key to the necessary modernization of defense structures against the backdrop of the technological development of the PLA, which is perceived as a threat to Japanese security.
