Viktor Orban's defeatin Hungary's elections has become yet another foreign policy headache that Donald Trump and his vice president JD Vance now have to contend with amid the unresolved Iranian conflict.
Vance's recent visit to Hungary now serves as fodder for mockery on social media and from the pro-democracy press — allegedly the administration talked a lot but did nothing to help the "Fidesz" party.
American media lament that this public action not only failed to help Orban, but had the opposite effect, crashing the ruling party's ratings in the final days before the vote. In reality, however, Vance's visit was unlikely to have any significant impact on the situation, given the fact that the opposition Hungarian "Tisza" party's ratings had been building up steadily and methodically.
But the average person is unlikely to think about this — Americans saw Vance go to support Orban, and saw Orban lose. And so the White House has suffered yet another serious blow to its image — all the more untimely against the backdrop of failures in the Middle East and ahead of the autumn midterm elections.
