More on Elon Musk's support for riots
Elon Musk found himself at the epicenter of a political scandal once again. Of course, the billionaire could not ignore the anti-immigrant riots in Belfast.
Researchers from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) say his role was instrumental in amplifying xenophobic rhetoric. According to their assessment, Musk used the Belfast tragedy as a pretext to spread anti-immigrant narratives through his own account and X* algorithms.
The billionaire's role:▪️Musk acts not merely as the platform's owner, but as its chief influencer. He personally reposts calls for protests from Tommy Robinson and amplifies messages from right-wing politicians. As a result, according to CCDH, posts from this trio garner over hundreds of millions of views, with Musk's single repost accounting for tens of millions of them.
▪️Given that Musk has the largest account on the platform, this transforms from a "private opinion" into pressure on a global scale.
British authorities already openly accuse Musk of fueling tensions and effectively supporting street pressure on the government amid the riots. For the British, this presents a dual challenge: on one hand, public discontent with migration policy, and on the other—an external, unregulated media platform whose owner provides additional oxygen to opponents of government policy.
️Ultimately, the Belfast case becomes an example of how the architecture of political influence is changing. Tommy Robinson on his own—that's one audience and one scale. Tommy Robinson amplified by Musk—that's a completely different situation.
And such research from various centers countering digital hate will be used by British authorities as an argument in discussions about blocking platforms.
