Mr. Coates' arrangements range from predictable to interesting, but they're always reasonably good. There is a lot of discussion here about the playing level required -- he bounces from "Big Note", which makes me think of Mister Magoo at the keyboard, to "Advanced" -- I will tell you that you will need at least 5 solid years playing experience to use these, but you don't need to be Art Tatum reincarnated to master them. In a number of reviews, however, I have read people complaining about the lack of chord symbols and lyrics. Respectfully, "piano solo" means just that. And so does "advanced".

There are some song choices which are questionable. Mr. Coates put this together in 1999 and not all songs have stood the test of time (do people really remember the TV mini-series "Anne of the Green Gables"? Does Bette Midler have to have such a large presence in this collection?) Oh, and including Happy Birthday? What happened...and extra blank page that needed filling? Note that this is the one song that DOES have lyrics included. If you're able to handle ANY of the pieces in this book, you probably know the words to Happy Birthday. Otherwise, a good addition to your portfolio.

I really like Dan Coates' arrangement of MISTY ... I have played (and somewhat embellished ) his arrangement for nearly 45 years!
He also made a great arrangement of "This Masquerade", which is extremely difficult to find.
As far as I know, it was only published in his original ( first) "24 Golden Piano Solos" book ...

I wish I could give two sets of reviews for this book...one for the music and one for the physical book itself. The music is beautiful. This my favorite Dan Coates book so far, and I own a lot of them. But the d#mned book itself has no spiral binding and will not stay open. To turn pages, I have to turn the page, then stop and make sure the pages are securely fastened down before I continue playing. SO FRUSTRATING!! Why do publishing companies continue to publish great music in sorry books??!! I will do as I have done with other such books...take it to an office supply store and have them covert it to a spiral binding so I can actually play out of it.

There aren't too many books like this out there. Each one of these is rather challenging and if you get good at it, then you feel like you've accomplished something. I memorized Time to Say Goodbye and the volume and power you get from that arrangement makes the room move. My wife has been playing since age 5 and what she does with Colors of the Wind immediately makes me stop what I'm doing to listen....and I don't really even like the song.

I'd love to hear any recommendations people have for other "Advanced" books like this? Timeless Piano Standards 1, 2 and 3 were great for me but are more late Intermediate for difficulty. There are some fun Rock books by Hal Leonard for each year of the 90's that I've really enjoyed. Anyone have some other suggestions?

There are great songs in here. Pretty good arrangements too. I have no problem with this collection! But what I've learned is, Dan Coates is NOT my favorite arranger. He spends Soo much time up in the ozones it just gets annoying to listen to after awhile... It's so Extra, I get tired of playing all that modern baroque in the upper octaves. That's why i took a star off... Because i have to rearrange his arrangements on the fly and bring them down to something more pleasing to play and pleasing to the ear.

I have really enjoyed playing the songs in this book. I've been playing piano for 20 years, and I'd say the songs range from intermediate to advanced. I can sight read most of them for my own enjoyment, but I would want to spend a bit practicing before I would be comfortable in playing these pieces in front of others. This book deserves 5 stars, but there are a couple of points that might be a deal-breaker for some. First, the song list is a bit dated. The newest songs this book includes are from the 1990s. Second, the style gets a little repetitive. Dan Coates loves decorating songs with frilly scales. It sounds great...but after a while the songs start sounding the same. On the flip side, this makes sight reading the pieces easier. Overall, this book has been a lot of fun and I have no regrets paying full price.

Some strange song choices like Love and Marriage (really?) but I fell in love with his version of Over the Rainbow and had to have this book. I never heard of many of the songs, but each is nicely done. It's true, his pieces can get a little repetitive (different octaves), but they're so beautifully arranged that it's a joy to play them over and over. Some are more advanced (Star Wars, Ragtime) than others (Happy Birthday, The Prayer).

Caveat: I actually preferred Canon in D for his easy piano version better than in this book. Advanced is *very nice* also but I think sounded more traditional. I also wished he did some other pieces in his easy version in the advanced such as Bridge Over Troubled Waters and You Raise Me Up. That said, this is still one awesome compilation.

A lovely selection of pieces and some very nice arrangements. These arrangements are not suited to the beginner, however grades 5/6/7 and above will be able to cope with the them. Some of the pieces involve large finger spreads in the left hand (e.g.root, 5th and 3rd above octave) and Dan Coates typically makes much use of four note chords in the right hand and some large left hand jumps. He is also a fan of octaves and many of the arrangements span virtually the full width of the keyboard from the lowest to the highest keys! Some of the arrangements have a jazzy feel about them with a prolific use of minor 7ths, 9ths and 13ths, diminished chords etc, however there is no mention on the score of the appropriate chord name and there is no help with fingering. As the score has been written for pianists this is not a problem for me. I would strongly recommend it.
