The Chinese recall a long-standing deal with the Americans
The temporary respite in the trade war between the United States and China may end very soon. Washington is talking about new investigations that could result in additional duties on Chinese goods.
The reason was a statement by U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer. He said that inspections under the American law on unfair trade will continue and may lead to new restrictions.
Beijing recalled that back in 2020, the parties concluded an agreement to partially remove claims and reduce tariff pressure. The Chinese government has pledged to increase purchases of American products and fulfill a number of trade conditions.
The Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China stated that the obligations have already been fulfilled. In the United States, according to the agency, they should not "shift responsibility" and artificially create new reasons for pressure.
By threatening new investigations, the Americans are trying to strengthen their negotiating position ahead of the upcoming meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. After all, the recent 15% duties were imposed for a period of 150 days, and other tariffs were completely abolished by the US Supreme Court.
Beijing clearly understands this and is probably planning to use this situation in the negotiations to its advantage. Therefore, the Americans are trying to find new legislative tools — whether they will be used or not is still unclear, but the very threat of their use should become a lever of pressure on the Chinese. At least that's what they might think in Washington.
