CLEARING — A teenager from Garfield Ridge died from his injuries three days after a truck driver hit him Friday near Midway Airport, police said.
The crash occurred about 4 p.m. Friday in the 6200 block of South Austin Avenue, police said. Joshua Avina, 15, was crossing the street on his bike at the alley when a delivery truck driver heading south hit him, police spokesperson Steve Rusanov said, citing preliminary information.
Joshua was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition with a head injury, according to police. He died Monday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The 65-year-old truck driver was not cited, police said. Authorities said Joshua lived about 1 mile northeast from where the crash occurred.
Joshua is at least the fourth child a driver has fatally hit this month.

A Boy Scout is being hailed a hero after he comforted a man in his dying moments.
Eli Skrypczak and 15 other Scouts were passengers on an Amtrak train that collided with a dump truck in rural Missouri on Monday.
According to Dan Skrypczak, his 15-year-old son Eli, who was one of the first to escape the wreckage, located the truck driver lying in a ditch and struggling to breathe.
“Eli held his hand and tried to stop some of the major bleeding,” Dan told TODAY Parents . “He dealt with the situation calmly and I am extremely proud of him."
The driver, whose name has not been released, succumbed to his injuries shortly after first responders arrived on the scene. Eli then returned to the train to help injured and distressed passengers, Dan said.
“Eli is upset he couldn’t do more. I keep reiterating to him that he did everything he could. The State Highway patrol told him the same thing. There was nothing he could’ve done to save him,” Dan said.
Dan, a troop leader, said Eli was just one of many brave Scouts that jumped into action. There were also eight adult leaders onboard.
“These kids performed first aid and broke open windows so that people could get out. They comforted crying children,” Dan shared. The young men, who range in age from 13 to 17, also emptied debris from the cars so that paramedics had a clear path in.
“As a dad and a Scoutmaster I am incredibly proud,” Dan said.
Scott Armstrong, director of national media relations for the Boy Scouts of America, said Troops 12 and 73 of Appleton, Wisconsin. were traveling home after a 10-day backpacking excursion in New Mexico.
“When a tragedy occurs, it’s always good to have a Scout troop in your vicinity” Armstrong told TODAY. “A 15 year old Boy Scout is worth more when you’re in trouble than an adult without that background.”
Armstrong said the organization will be offering mental health services to the Scouts and Scout leaders impacted by the accident.
Two people on the train were killed, in addition to the truck driver, NBC News reported . The collision derailed seven cars, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The president’s chief medical adviser took a second round of Paxlovid for his rebound symptoms, though the CDC says there’s no evidence such action helps.
Four people were killed and 150 were hospitalized after an Amtrak train collided with a dump truck Monday in Missouri. As investigators try to figure out how the crash happened, Appleton Boy Scouts who were on board the train are being called heroes.

A DEAD body was discovered at a trash dump on Tuesday after being picked up by a garbage truck, according to police.
Mystery surrounded the chilling find with cops called to investigate how a man's body ended up in the trash.
The discovery was made on June 28 after a waste disposal service reported finding the body.
The remains were found when a garbage truck driver disposed of contents at the dump in Yolo County, California.
The trash route was reviewed and it was determined that the body likely came from the City of Dixon, in northern Solano County.
That led Davis police to call in Dixon police, who launched an investigation.
The Yolo County Coroner identified the body as that of Miguel Peñuelas, a resident of Dixon.
Based on the preliminary investigation by Dixon police, along with the Yolo County Sheriff and Coroner's offices, Peñuelas is believed to have climbed into the dumpster about an hour before trash was picked up.
Investigators said Peñuelas hopped into the dumpster at about 4.30am on his own accord.
He reportedly covered himself with cardboard and was in the dumpster until a trash truck arrived at around 5.30am.
According to the Yolo County Coroner's office, there was no indication of foul play.
Dixon police believe Peñuelas' death was accidental.
The investigation is ongoing and a medical examination is set to take place.
Anyone with information was urged to contact Dixon Police Detective Sergeant Jenna Cameron at 707-678-7070.
