Wife Material always considered herself an 80s baby, but when brainstorming ideas for the latest episode of “I Love My Wife” with Tough Love, the 70s seemed too interesting a choice to ignore. Although many aspects of contemporary music are in adoration over the last two decades of the 20th century, some of the most provocative, groundbreaking, and foundational music that the women of “I Love My Wife” love today, was influenced by the heady, eclectic 70s. With classic rock, jazz fusion, funk, and a whole bunch of other unclassifiable gems, there’s a little bit of everything on “AM/FM.”

Shameless objectification. Ice cream. Outdoor concerts. Here in Chicago, Summer is a pretty big deal. Although not confirmed, it generally feels like temperatures hover somewhere around 20 degrees during any time BUT the three glorious, sweltering, potentially unbearable but undeniably beautiful months of Summer. And to celebrate this glorious season, we dedicate one episode of I Love My Wife to everything good, bad, and a little bit raunchy during Summer. For Summer 2010, there’s a touch of spastic new wave, 90s hip hop, and the hazy contemporary gems that make you feel good.

Aside from scones, weirdos with guitars are the favorite things for Chicago-based music writers Britt Julious (aka “Wife Material”) and Arianna Stern (aka “Tough Love”). Throw in a couple of ear-bleeding yelps, the eclectic use of electronics, and heavy distortion and you’ve got “I Love My Wife.” We’re Listening. Maybe you should be, too.

For Tough Love and Wife Material, their idols include everyone from post-punk geniuses The Slits, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, and Family Fodder to contemporaries like Marnie Stern and Brazilian Girls. This episode of “I Love My Wife” is probably the most eclectic yet and heartfelt yet as the Chicago-based noise aficionados stuck to their tried and true favorites. The yearning sing-talk of Life Without Buildings, the peppy genre-bending allure of The Long Blondes, and the guttural yelps of Fugazi all find a place here.

Think lusher vocals, walls of sounds, and a little more variety than just “lo-fi.” In “Free Falling,” Wife Material offers some of her favorite tracks for the fall. There is a slew of new material from experimental acts trying to find their footing and a couple of older jams that are sure to please your ears and whet the appetite for the benefits of colder temperatures.

It’s always good to go back to what you’ve loved and will continue to love, but that certainly doesn’t mean there aren’t really good jams being released every day for you to devour. In fact, with thousands of music blogs and tons of free visibility and marketing through the internet, exciting new music to whet your appetite is popping up nearly every second. The problem is trying to figure out a way to sort through all of the inevitable glut to find the true gems. On this episode of I Love My Wife, Tough Love and Wife Material give you a taste of what they’re currently listening to and loving and what you should be enjoying as well!

Weird gets complicated as Balearic disco and surf pop enter the equation. Can weird music only be defined to noise music or are more experimental and eclectic touches transcendent of genre? And if music of a variety of genres is capable of causing a frenzy in fans 40 years ago as much as it can in the post-modern haze of the new millennium, does that mean that musicians can in turn create a more free-for-all and up-close (and even Twitter-based) relationship with their fans?
